Let's get some Algae Biofuel, Aquaponics, vermiculture, and bug keeping etc up in this thread!

Also I want to start an algae farm to be used as fuel, any tips on harvesting the fuel/how to grow algae?

Algae fuel is at this point a pipe dream.

I have been a regular subscriber to one of the main algae fuel newsletters for several years and know that they have never produced any fuel that wasn't enormously expensive.

That doesn't mean they won't some day. But last I heard algae fuel cost about five hundred bucks a barrel.

Why is it so expensive? isn't it like, plant them, give them sun, ventilation, let them vegetate and then harvest?

So where we can get the best algaes?
Seawater? Lakewater? wouldn't it be polluted with other stuffs?

It takes more energy to grow the algae, take care of it, and make fuel than the fuel itself creates.

Methane made from manure is far more cost efficient for the energy output it gives. It's not as pretty as algae, but it's a shit load better.

For something like biogas generation from manure you actually put less energy into it than you get out of it.

But why can't i just leave the tank (while stirring and bubbling it with fresh air (containing natural CO2))?
What else do i have to do?
Isn't it profitable? get oil and biomas then, convert biomas into methane or burn to produce nergy for the facility.

>> No.56334

>>56323
>Nope

In math you are correct, but this is not clean math. An extreme example is, I can make a solar box cooker with very little effort and energy. However, that device will allow my to receive Mega btus of thermal energy. I'm getting more energy from that device than I'm personally putting into it.

Why is that? Because of the sun. It's putting the energy in, I'm simply collecting it. This is a similar thing to the biogas generation. I provide a way to harvest naturally occurring methane that does not need to be processed. Additionally, the spent manure can be used as fertilizer. Almost nothing is wasted.

>>56329
>What else do i have to do?

You need to turn it into oil after you've grown it. That is where the main problems arise.

>> No.56336

>>56334
You obviously don't know how entropy works.
1. The sun shall one day run out of hydrogen
2. Some of the energy collected by your solar box cooker is wasted during the process of collection and applying it to cook you food.
3. That energy ain't getting back when you eat the food, as the energy used chew it and digest it is greater than the energy it gives to your body. Also, more resources are wasted when you give a shit. And the shit itself is another waste of which your body can't take advantage of.

Entropy always applies. In one way or another. You can't make 4 dollars into 5 dollars.

Thanks for the laugh children.

The problem with algae is they have never solved how to get the water out. This is from me talking to scientists doing the research.

Whatever method you use, sun drying, screw press, centrifuge every last one takes a lot of energy to separate out the water.

Other issues such as growing or feeding the algae have been solved by putting plants near agricultural run off or near coal plants to soak up co2. But it always goes back to getting the water out.

>> No.57232

how to harvest the oil from the algae is actually the exact problem barring widespread adoption. afaik simple presses like the screw press shown in >>55727 are actually terrible for algae, meant more for olives. algae is just so much slush, it's hard to really crush it any more.

my old grade school now has a small methane plant. The fuel is leftover school lunches and the bacteria came from methane ice bubbles in an Arctic lake. The methane helps heat the school.
