I would love an alternative tree.

Maybe I could find a pretty fallen branch or something and stick fairy lights on it.

I always wanted to do this project

http://zedomax.com/blog/zedomax-diy122-make-a-led-christmas-tree/

Sadly, the best I can do is build one using a PVC pipe and some LED soldered on wires and taped together.

Maybe I'll post my clusterfuck version of this....one of these days

My only question about that is: how do you attach the cans to the wire? Do you make a hole in the can, push the wire through then bend it? Or do you, say, glue it to the inside bottom?

Also, may also want to toss in a few code reds to make it look like you have a decoration on the tree besides the lights.

I've never done it. But if it were me I'd poke (no need to drill) a hole and thread it. Gluing doesn't sound as sturdy to me.

It looks like he's just poking them through the mouth. Gravity and the shape of the can prevents it from slipping out.
