So, /diy/, not sure if this is the right board but I'm sure you'll tell me if it isn't.

I have a very long-term dream of one day buying 100 acres of arable, untouched land in a rural area and building a self-sustainable farm. I'd like this farm to be able to house several families other than my own. I'm giving myself about 20 years to make this a reality, though if I'm fortunate maybe I'll have it in 10.

What I'd like to do is start designing the layout of the houses, and what the first house would look like. I'm thinking something ecologically friendly, but very permanent.

I'd appreciate it if any of you could point me in the direction of a computer program that you use for designing houses, including outdoor areas and the like, plus books on how to build houses.

Also, do any of you have experience trying anything like this?

Looks interesting. Is it a steep learning curve?

watch tutorials to see the most efficient ways to make the shapes you want to make. making stuff is pretty intuitive, but if you use the techniques in the tutorials you can make stuff really fast.
