What are some things that you make that most people would just buy?

I made a big batch of laundry detergent today along with some liquid dish soap.

Detergent

1 Cup - Mule Team Borax
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
1 Bar - Ivory Original Soap

Mix the borax and washing soda together in a container. Grate the soap in with a cheese grater, or use a food processor if making a huge batch. Toss in with the other ingredients and mix well. Store in an air tight container.

I usually use about 2 TBSP per load, but it depends on how dirty the clothes are. I like it since it is free of most of the crap that comes in normal detergent and is also incredibly cheap by comparison. Even if you made this small batch, it should last you a few weeks. Most people make a huge batch all at once, which should last you months.

Hand/Dish Soap

2 Cups - Any liquid castille soap. I use Dr. Bronners.
.5 Cup - Water
.5 Cup - White Vinegar
1 Tsp - Lemon Juice (optional)

Mix it all together and you are good to go. I like to use a foaming pump since it makes it last a lot longer. This shouldn't be used in a dishwasher.

I also make my own body wash, shampoo and toothpaste. It really isn't that hard to make these things and you wind up saving money and not subjecting yourself to a ton of extra chemicals.

Mule Team Borax was $5.50 for 76 oz.
Super Washing Soda was $5.00 for 55 oz.
Ivory soap was $1.95 for 3 bars. 4.5 oz each (total 13.5 oz).

1 batch = 20.5 oz
2 TBSP = 1 oz

20.5 uses per batch.

If we wanted to max it out and use all of the borax it would break down to this.

Borax - $5.50
Super Wash Soda - $6.91
Soap (3 packs of 3 bars) - $5.85

Total = $18.26

Total OZ of detergent = 192 oz

192 oz = 192 batches of laundry.

Total cost per batch is .10 cents.

You can get detergent from the store for about .10 cents a batch as well if you buy store brand or from Amazon, but we don't do it entirerly to save on money. It is also about not having our soap be full of harsh chemicals and also about using fairly earth friendly stuff. It could be even more friendly if we wanted.

The problem with this list is the average person doesn't want to actually do any cooking. They don't believe they should only eat staples and that they deserve better. They see this list and say, "What am I suppose to do with 25lbs of lentils".

According to the USDA, the average spending on food for males aged 19-50 was $324 a month. The "thrifty" spenders spent $220.

If you take this list you have here, throw in some fruit and veg along with some lean meats, you would still be spending far below the average and be eating pretty healthily. One of the major reasons this country is so fat is due to an overabundance of processed food and a general public who knows nothing of nutrition or cooking.

With this list you can make an insane amount of food, but again, the average person doesn't want to bake their own bread, make soups, etc. They would rather spend $3 on a box of pasta, $3 on a jar of sauce and $3 on a loaf of shitty "garlic bread".

What it boils down to is laziness and a lack of caring on the part of the average person. Rather than learning how to cook new things, they would rather keep eating the same old processed crap every day.

Ah yes, the ever present, "But I am too busy to cook." If you can find 30 minutes a day, you can cook. Make larger batches on weekends. Use a slow cooker to cook while you are gone. Focus on simple, easy to prepare dishes from those ingredients.

It really isn't that hard. I work between 8 and 16 hours a day, an usually at least one day on the weekend, yet I find time to cook all of my food.

>> No.467396

hey OP, about how much do you save doing those things? (The dish soap and laundry detergent)

I'm always looking to save some cash, if it's more than 5 bucks I'll probably start making them lol.

I don't think this really counts, but I cook all my own food and eat out absolutely no more than 5 times a month (and that's REALLY being generous, realistically it's around 1-2x)

I'm not 100% sure how much I save, but I know it's in the 3 digits per month. I figure eating 2x a day off fast food would cost around 10 bucks (not counting soda etc), that'd be around 300 bucks a month. I'm easily spending less than 100, and eating damn good I might add.

moral of the story: my generation needs to learn how to cook

I rarely eat out (once or twice a week) but i'm certainly under no delusion that I can feed myself with quality food for under 200$ dollar a month, let alone 20$ a month.

Division of labor isn't a panacea to optimize the use of time. You could, in theory, pay someone to: wipe your ass, help you take a bath/shower, do your bed, help you dress, etc. But, what does that make you? A fucking baby!

Does eating out really save time? Going to a restaurant requires you to drive to a restaurant and find parking space (which would take some time if it doesn't have a parking lot), wait for a seat (especially if it's a popular restaurant) and also for your meal to be cooked. There's also time spent on the journey back home. Unless you're going to a fast food restaurant close by, you won't be saving a lot of time, only effort.

"Division of labor" applies to anything that you pay someone to do for you. If you extrapolate on hiring people to do work for you to save time, that's would be a logical result if you apply the principle to its fullest potential. A person who specializes in wiping ass would know how to do it in the most efficient manner, and thus saving YOU time.

Its just a case of overly-sensitive anons getting butthurt.
from what I see, this guy>>467372
said some dumb shit.
and then this guy>>467398
told him hard.
then the assumption shitstorm began.

moral of the story? don't post stupid shit unless you're prepared to get told.

We do kitchen countertops mostly.
And bathrooms, fireplaces, etc - 'architectural concrete'

Actually, no rebar in that - The 'mesh' is epoxied carbon fiber (this stuff called C-Grid).
Though you're right, for that piece we prolly over did it...

Assuming you mean concrete.
Or do you actually bake your own limestone?

those legs would be nice if they were flush with the outside edge.
Would give a more modern look.

Does your company use lightweight aggregate? It can save on weight.
I haven't heard of c-grid. is that used in conjunction with fiberglass fibers?

Mostly we just use normal gravel.
Asphalt company here sells it for dirt cheap.

We use it in place of rebar.
Though for long spans and overhangs, we'll usually throw in some pencil rod too.

You talking GFRC? We've dabbled in it. The glass replaces the aggregate and acts as the reinforcement - So no C-Grid, but we do use this other scrim stuff.

I love this board. I've found it to be one of my favorite online communities.
Quality comes and goes, but if you can wade through the occasional shit, there are some real great people and ideas here.

>What are some things that you make that most people would just buy?

Today, I made some TIG sleeves out of black tube socks (elastic end goes by the wrist) and a solar fountain birdbath for hummingbirds. I think the TIG sleeves came out to be under $3 a pair (and I got 3 pairs now), while the fountain cost about $32. Commercially, I can't even get TIG sleeves long enough (25" or so), but the athletic sleeves are like $40 a pair. Too bad they're mostly spandex and will draw-up after enough exposure to the arc. Solar fountain birdbaths are around $250+, last time I checked.

Please note that the sleeves are ONLY good for TIG use. If you put on tube socks and try to wire or stick weld, you will burn the shit out of yourself. They're only good for keeping the UV & IR light off your skin.

The 3 soaps people seem to recommend are Ivory, Zote and some sort of Castille soap.
