Hey /diy/, can I remove this 1x3 furring strip? There is 2 of them that run the length of the house and I want to know if I can take them down with out consequences. They are the only ones here and they were here ever since I moved in .

DEAR GOD NO OP.

THAT'S A LOAD BEARING FURRING STRIP.

Somebody told me that they were functioning as blocking to prevent the joists from rolling/twisting. I don't know if they are full of shit or not.

OP, Don't take that board down. I don't care what anyone tells you, if you do this, you will regret it.

Usually it's done this way. With just the strip it would allow all the joists to bow together.

That is the only bridging/blocking I have, can I install solid or cross blocking instead and take that down? Parts of it were screwed in with drywall screws and it is bent and cracked and does not look like a professional installation which leads me to believe it was done after construction by a homeowner

if you want to remove it, place bridging before removal. make it the same size as the joists, staggered in pattern. this will ensure the joists dont twist or move later

What did furring strip ever do to you OP?

>> No.423336

yep you can take it out.
the purpose of the strip is to serve as a poor mans blocking.
in new home construction the homes are often build with lumber that has a high moisture content. when it dries out the joist tend to warp.
it prevents the joist from twisting which can cause the hardwood flooring or tile above to squeak/crack.
just install solid blocking, its much better.
or, if you plan to drywall the ceiling you'll have to strap it out anyway which will serve as blocking.
its really not a big deal if you do remove it tho.

put in the blocking or 2x4/6s before you take out the strip, also make sure you cut them to the right length, you don't want to be pounding them in and forcing the joists in any particular direction

also, wish my basement looked like that
