I'm so sick of people thinking that ammonia and bleach makes chlorine gas. It may make minute quantities, but the equilibrium is GREATLY shifted towards making chloramine gas. Then of course, chloramine is also incredibly toxic, so you're dead either way. To make chlorine gas, mix hydrochloric acid (pool acid) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

I would imagine so. Sand and charcoal are excellent at removing fine contaminants such as yeast, dirt particles, etc. Make sure the charcoal is activated as well and it could neutralize some chemical contaminants. I wouldn't trust this for potentially bacteria/parasite laden water though. I may be incorrect in my assumption however. Maybe someone with more knowledge of filtration can help.

But yeah, there's no way a coffee filter would get finely mixed yeast microbes out of a solution. It can't even catch coffee that is too finely ground. You could also try a pre-made filter with smaller pores such as Buchner funnel filter paper or a glass-fritted filter. Both of those can be purchased on the cheap from chemical supply websites.

Kilju is just water, sugar, and yeast. It's supposed to just taste like alcohol and water (like weak vodka I guess?) but I used WAY too much yeast, cause it was only my second time. There's no flavor in this that I don't want removed.

The only problem is Buchner funnel filter paper works best when it is being suctioned to the filter by a vacuum. It may take some experimenting but the pores in Buchner filter paper are MUCH finer than a coffee filter. Let me know how it goes.

When I did the coffee filters, first attempt I used the bottle to make a vaccum to pull the kilju through. Like I would compress the bottle and then let it suck through the filter. This worked okay, but later I had a different, weirder set up.

This time I was putting it into a pot, so I put a strainer over the pot, and put a piece of piping I had over the strainer with filters on the bottom. To get it going fast, I would blow into the piping. It worked very well. Tonight I'm gonna try with the filter paper.

Anybody can say this over the internet, but I actually have a degree in chemistry. You're making a pretty shitty vacuum, but it's good enough to filter out yeast. I used buchner funnels in lab to filter out all but the finest particulates. The finest required a glass fritted funnel.
