hey guys, i went inna woods today to get some wood for a project im about to start. I know weapons arnt really allowed to be talked about here, so im not going to be going into detail but im looking to make a bow.

granted i dont know much about identifying trees, i was in the woods in northern va looking for a nice hickory stave. i found a tree that looked (to me atleast) like it was hickory bark, so i got my saw and cut the little guy down. unfortunatlly as i was about half way through i realized that it was way to soft to be hickory. i felt it would be a waste to just leave it half sawed down so i took a good sized log from it.

any of you guys good at identifying wood? im thinking it may be white oak or something at this point. it definitely feels like a soft wood to me. here's a few pics.

heres one of the tree laying down in the woods. sorry for the poor quality i only had my phone camera with me at the time. i have one of the end of one of the branches as well, however its so blurry you cant really see the detail. if you want to see it i can post it, or if you need more of the log i can post that too.

na. i was thinking of going there but its a really slow board and i didnt want to waste a thread slot there for a temporary question.

also if its not a suitable bow wood ill need some ideas of what to with it. im not going to waste a tree i cut down.

Why not make a PVC bow? They're cheap, hard-hitting, and easy to work with. Once the leaves return it will be much easier to find your hickory tree.

Hate to tell you OP but you can't exactly just cut a tree down and expect the wood to be useable...

It needs to be sawn and then kiln dried in a specific way so it doesn't cup or bend...

There is A LOT more to wood than just cutting down a tree and using it, that chunk of wood has so much water content in it that it's fairly worthless the way it currently is...

Might want to Google it..

I think weapons are actually okay as long as it's stuff like this and not "how can I make my gun easier to hide at school".

In the rules it says something to the effect of "Think 'DIY Weekly', not 'Anarchist's Cookbook'." and this is def the former.

Pictures aren't really showing the bark too well but I agree that its some type of oak. As far as what to do with a piece that size, get a couple more, let them dry out and have a bonfire with this summer

It feels soft cause it's full of moisture, it needs to be kiln dried like I mentioned earlier.

To confirm: I want to try and make a perfect replica of Ezio's hidden blade, which would entail an actual custom sharpened blade. If I made the whole thing from scratch, including the leather brace, would that be in the /diy/ spirit enough to post?

what i will tell you about this is its an ampitius project.

making the blade or the bracers really isnt the problem. Even the release mechanism isnt going to be too hard.

the thing that really makes the design difficult is the blade retraction. not to mention the fact that the blade is going to be incredibly unstable and that using it for anything other than a puncture (slashing or cutting) is going to be dangerous.

also just rigging it so it doesnt cut your hand up is going to be another hurdle.

The wood is 'green', of course it's soft. Even old-growth oak is quite soft and easy to work when green.

because im an impatient asshat (and was able to harvest 3 good staves from that tree) i think im going to make 2 blanks out of one of the staves while the wood is still green, then try drying one with a heat gun. i wonder how well that will work

Actually I have some background in mechanical engineering; I refused to start until I worked out a mechanism first and foremost. I feel confident I have managed that, but of course I have to build a prototype or seven before the final product. It's based on a modified Dual Action OTF knife mechanism altered to operate within the confines of pic related, to include the two-part collapsible blade. Although until you mentioned it I never took slashing and cutting into consideration, and I am not confident I could design a mechanism that would allow that safely, although it is worth thinking about. Otherwise, I feel I have solved the safety issues associated with blade extension and retraction.

I don't want to hijack OP's thread to much, if anybody is interested, I'll be posting in roughly a month once the first prototype is built. I namefag as Reichardt !vXKh1ytRio

It's definitely not a softwood since it's clearly deciduous. It appears to be oak of some sort from the bark, although I can't be sure from that pic. A good proportion of the leaf litter appears to be oak too, so it's probably a fair bet. It it were me, I'd want an older tree and I wouldn't use oak.

I find the wood seems to like to dry better if you leave the bark on - if you care out your basic shape, the wood might crack a bit as it dries, which is obviously not something you want in a bow. Given that you have three staves though, it won't hurt to try it. Drying with a heat gun is almost certain to produce cracks.

Dipping the ends in white glue can also help prevent cracking, since it's exposed wood as well.
