my second attempt at casting an aluminium gear
i was using a plaster mould and carved the shape out of candle wax
made some casting sand a while back but havent had the chance to use it since my "furnace" (aluminium cooking pot with holes in it buried in the ground) started melting. planning on getting a scrap steel cylinder and surrounding it with sand or dirt to keep the heat trapped in. every place i go to doesnt have fireclay or they have expensive premixed refractory (if i was rich i wouldnt be using a garden pot...). havent melted anything in about a year...

I am (almost) making belted radial bicycle tires.... I have all the stuff to do it but I need to test-ride and it's too cold (winter in northern hemisphere). I will be continuing it again soon, and should be testing tires in a couple months.

Pic is a tire casing with a steel belt around it, but I am planning on using nylon or polyester instead.
The steel would have a lower rolling resistance but it is also heavier and more-expensive ($25 for the cable alone).

Not much of a /diy/er anymore since college.

But in my teenage years, I made me a bed similar to that Drake & Josh show. I had my bed up on a platform in the middle of the room with one side having a built in couch (folds out to another bed) and stairs up to my bed. The other side was a fold-out desk for homework and crafts projects. The end had a few dresser drawers.

I make a bunch of little gadgets and shit but that was the biggest thing I built. After college and I buy a house, I'd like to do some /diy/ remodeling. I want to get a decent fixer-upper on a few acres of land and make it shine. Then build a garage with a second story workshop. Maybe even a bunker or something to stock pile shit. I moved to Texas for college and we have so many tropical storms compared to where I grew up. Not sure if I should dig out a place or have something high-ground.

>No really, belted tires are the norm.
not for bicycles they're not.
belted tires have a flat tread area (like car tires) and have much less rolling resistance than non-belted (round-profile) tires. Using a radial-thread casing also helps a bit, but most of the advantage comes from using a restrictive belt to flatten the tread area.

Paul Rinkowski is the only person known to have made such tires for bicycles. The expected performance was observed but due to the circumstances (1960-s East Germany) very few people ever witnessed the advantage first-hand.

Modern bicycle tire companies don't make them because it cannot be done on standard bicycle-tire-making machinery. Home-builders don't make them because,,,,,, I guess they just assumed it wasn't possible.

NP. Circuit is based of Texas Instrument's LM380. The 380 and their copycats can be found in many electronics stores for pretty cheap. Its a pretty run of the mill chip with a low external part count. Not audiophile choice but it'll do.

C3 (giant ass cap) is a DC blocking cap. It protects the speaker. Now I went a bit overboard there but it doesn't hurt to have a capacitor that big there. What happens is the cap and speaker form a highpass filter. To lower the "corner frequency" (where it cuts off) of that filter you get a bigger cap. For most applications as small as 470uF will work but 4700uF plus ( w/ 8ohm speaker) is ideal. For discerning listeners that cap should be audio grade (tantalum, etc) but it will play with a radio shack electrolytic.

C1 (pictured as the tiny electrolytic) is traditionally a ceramic. I didn't have one on hand at the time of the picture.

This is also mono. You can copy the circuit for the other channel or build a stereo to mono circuit and plug that into pin 2 as shown.

Avid cyclist here. This is an interesting idea, but I have a couple questions:

1. How do they handle on corners? The rounded profile of bike tires helps when cornering hard since you only have two wheels.

2. Wouldn't this increase the risk of hydroplaning when biking on wet roads? Again, the rounded shape of bike tires makes it so that hydroplaning is just about impossible. Won't making the contact area flatter make it more possible?

Is hydro planing really ever an issue on a bike? I'd imagine you'd just cut through the water unless you were going ridiculously fast. Not an "avid cyclist" exactly myself, but I do bike as prime means of transportation year round (60°N) albeit never much faster than 40km/h (singlespeed fag). Do road bikes actually plane if you hit water at high speeds?

>>400224
More of a side note, if you motorcycle with one of those passenger carts you have to change tyres to ones with a flat cross section. However, I'd imagine a motorcycle would be more sensitive to flatness than a bicycle, due to the fact that flatness on a mc would mean lifting the centre of (the quite considerable) mass a considerable vertical distance when you turn. An a bike this wouldn't be as problematic since the vast majority of the mass is in the cyclist, who is free to lower his mass in response. I am basing this on a lot of experience riding heavy motorcycles and bicycles with round wheels and an incomplete understanding of Newtonian physics, not experience with riding on flat wheels, so who knows.

>> No.400277

>>400266
Hydroplaning isn't typically an issue on the basis of ground/tire pressure. If you were to coax a mountain bike up to 50 mph or so it might be an issue (and you'd deserve what you got), but any bike that runs tires over 60 psi won't ever be going fast enough to hydroplane.

> How do they handle on corners?
I dunno, I ain't made any actual tires yet. I got the different machinery working in the fall of 2012, and it's too cold outside to test during the winter. So it's all just been sitting for a couple months. I have been working on this (making bicycle tires) for about four years now. The coldest month is past (for USA) so I should get back into it again soon.

I don't know about cornering or hydroplaning. Nobody else seems to either.

The latex does feel grippier than normal tires though. And even if they aren't great at extreme cornering, they will still have much lower rolling resistance in straight lines. I suspect there's more than a few people who will pay for that.

How do you heat the metal ? I'm studying Mechatronics and we got to cast some shit with AlSi. I believe the temperature was 700-800*C... how did you achieve that ? What means did you use ? I've been itching to try casting something simple myslef but that boggles me.

>Do road bikes actually plane if you hit water at high speeds?

They don't, mostly due to the nature of being thin and rounded. I was just curious if making belted tires with a flatter contact area would cause it to become an issue. It might not, but it was just a question.

Figuring from the results I have gotten, you can't really make a belted (flat-tread-profile) tire with a tread area a much wider than the inside width of the rim. If the belt is wider than the rim, then the bend of the sidewall isn't distributed evenly.

So this means a 700c tire would have a belt that is about 3/4-inch wide, and a wider (downhill-type) rim would have a belt about 1 inch wide. A belted tire would be a shorter profile but somewhat wider than a typical normal (round-profile) tire and a lot of traditional racing road bikes don't leave much of any clearance around the tires, particularly inside the forks.

The main markets I'm imagining is Battle Mountain/IHPVA, velomobile people and recumbent people. They have $$$, like to go fast and have no UCI-legality concerns. Shell Eco-Marathon is another group of probable buyers, though there are rules and Michelin is a sponsor.

If it never catches on with the TdF crowd I don't give a shit. They don't ride the fastest bikes anyway ^U^

Sewing has a bit of a learning curve before you can make anything that looks half decent. I'd recommend buying a cheap second hand machine / asking your mother if she has one. Practice, and buy some beginner level sewing patterns once you feel comfortable with the techniques. Don't bother with sewing magazines like Burda, the instructions are usually very limited.

Jewelry is pretty easy, there are tons of online shops selling beads and supplies. You just need some basic pliers and snips. You can either string beads on a wire or use eye pins and jump rings and stuff to assemble a piece.

Pillows are definitely entry level. Same for draw string pouches, bascially anything that is rectangular should work out reasonably well.

If you're not sure you're getting into sewing, I'd say pick up the cheapest machine you can find and hope it doesnt explode on you or anything. If you're a little more serious about it, look for a second hand decent machine. For the first few years I used a <€100 toyota machine, it could only go fast and even faster, and I was really jealous of my mom's fancy sewing machine, which is really high end (think €1000+). I didn't need ALL the functionality that that thing has (though I did have an hour or so of fun with the dinosaur shaped stitch, no joke) and bought a second hand Pfaff machine for €350 which is a quality machine with dual feed. That was the most important feature to me as it helps prevent huge tangled messes when feeding multiple layers of fabric through the machine.

sorry man I though the thread was long dead. I didn't do any major planning as such, but I took a (I think, I can't measure it just now) 1.2 metre length of square steel tube outer width 25mm inner width 20mm, and I went and got a plastic 30mm diameter rolling door roller and cut a small section from the top of the pipe (pic related) which i slotted the roller wheel into (i used washers and spacers to get it centred)

Then i made the handle, i simply cut two lengths of aluminium about 20cm by 2.5cm and drilled a hole in the same space on each of them (pic) so they would get bolted onto the same spot that the roller wheel is. I then cut and shaped some wood to suit as a handle in between the two pieces of ally and i bolted it together, remembering to leave space for the string to go between the body and the handle and also space for a tuner. I also bent a piece of ally and bolted it to the top of the frame to make the handle stop at a certain point so you can tune the whamola. (cont)

After that, I bolted string saddle to the bottom of the whamola, I chose a 36" scale so I spaced it about 37" away from where the nut would be. Once again it was just ally bent and shaped and bolted to the bottom, but with a string sized hole in the middle of it. Make this hole fairly low to the body of the whamola, so you have proper string height and tension at the bridge

The next part is furnishing it. I used 5mm marine ply what had a real nice finish on the 3 non fingerboard sides, and then I used a 10mm thick piece of African mahogany ad the finger board. You can use whatever but just make sure it fits and that its comfortable. But you need to leave about 7-10cm between the bridge and the base of the fingerboard for your pickup. I used 2 part epoxy to glue it to the steel. After that, I made the bridge and nut out of some hardwood I had in the shed, these can be any height to suit the depth of your fingerboard and your playing style. Mine were quite deep because I had s thick fingerboard.

Once you're happy with the string setup and height and everything that goes with it, the electronics come next. Use a p-bass pickup but cut it in half (so just use one section since its naturally split in two) and have it going vertical in the gap you left between the fingerboard and the bridge. You will need enough string height to fit this pickup. I didn't and I had to cut the magnet off the bottom of it, it still works fine though. Don't bother getting an expensive pickup either.
There are plenty of wiring diagrams for pbass pickups so just follow one, just have a volume knob, you can have tone if you really want but I didn't bother. I mounted my electronics on a nice piece of walnut coming off the side of the whamola body.

It should now be playable, but you still need a foot for it. Find a height that is comfortable with you and then install either a threaded rod with nuts on the end that you glue and shove into the bottom of the whamola body (that's what I did, the nuts keep it tight in there) or get a cello/double bass adjustable foot and install that. Once you're happy with it it should be all playable now. I varnished mine in clear polyurethane to give it a nice gloss look

looks good dude, i tried an acoustic once but i did not have the skills to put in a trust rod and eventually my alternation went due to poor craftsman ship. First try though, I plan to make a dust proof room for the second construction.

sorry bout the "ill answer 2 weeks later and youll miss it" but for any one else wondering it honestly isnt hard. melting aluminium is very easy to get started with. melting aluminium eficiently is another problem. i basically started messing around with a wood fire in my barbecue using a hair dryer to give it some heat. somewher along the lines i decided to see steel change colour by heating it then said "fuck it lets melt something". a metal coffeee cup, pliers and aluminium sheeting is all that was needed. for that gear i was using an aluminum pot buried half way in to the ground and was powering with charcoal briquettes, going to start pouring my own proper furnace today

I'm not going to be done with this for many months, but here is the design for the outline so far... There are many flaws that need to be corrected. The compass I have is kinda shitty and kept moving. Also, I was stupid and chose to use watercolor paper rather than drafting paper so the lead in the compass wore down very fast resulting in thick, uneven lines.

They do disintegrate certainly when outdoors but not that quickly. Their lifespan is indefinite under a roofed shed so long as a bale or tractor doesnt damage them. I would never treat timber as I have never seen its lifespan lengthened in my climate by treating it with the green poisonous preservative when brushing on. The vacuum tanks for treating timber make only a marginal difference. I took a picture since you inquired of a trough. Its just seasoned thats all. I took a few more pictures of stuff i did when i had my phone handy.
The top picture is an oil immersed atv alternator i fitted on a loader as the lucas alternators i was using were had a short life due to the engine blowing oil. I was blowing rectifier regulators for a while before i realized the ignition key was switching itself off. I replaced that with a isolation switch and now theres no more trouble.
Below that is a calf creep feeder made with second hand iron with 3 point linkage not visible.
below that is a concrete water trough made with reclaimed roofing timber for the moulds. it got stuck in it and i had to wait until it rotted out.
below the timber trough you asked after is a car trailer i made. the hubs are from an isuzu gemini and the wheels are from an opel astra. The hitch and leaf springs are from a previous trailer that everything else disintegrated on.
