So, arc welding is a pretty big part of my shop grade this year.

I'm a newb. Help me out, /diy/.

No?

Keep distance from the electrode to the surface you are welding as consistent as possible.

its pretty much practice makes perfect. I am also assuming that you are just laying down welds on a flat piece of like 10 by 10 inch piece of steel or so.

Also, let the metal cool between multiple welds or the shit starts to warp.

Didn't your instructor go over all of this?

Well, apparently what I'm getting wrong is travel speed, which is making the bead fairly inconsistent. When I try and slow it down, I pretty much end up making a giant ugly lake.

Since I haven't really gotten any magical tips or tricks, I guess the pedophile-looking guy in the video was right- it really is practice makes perfect.

Practice, practice, practice
Don't put your elbow on they table and drag it across like so many people say to do, you want no contact at all except for your feet to the floor and your hand on the stinger.
Clean the everliving fuck out of your welds, this is the difference between pass and fail if you do any kind of test plates in the class.
Buy your own gloves if a personal pair is not provided, this is mandatory.
Ideally buy your own helmet too, they're not that expensive.

If I think of any more I'll post them.
