Have you tried a brewery? Often they sell a home brewing kit with malt hops and yeast, I started like this now i buy ingredients from all over the country and have them delivered by mail.
Its usually best to try get hold of some homebrewers in your area because the availability of ingredients varies so much from place to place

you might be well off starting with a wine, an apple wine is what I started first, to get the feel for the sterilizing, which is most of the process. That way you don't have to deal with boiling, and your costs decrease from that. All you will need is proper yeast, apple juice, a bucket and secondary (to rack after a week) and lots of sugar or honey.

I use midwestsupplies dot com, they will even give you a free instructional dvd with any order. Hops smell like shit when you boil them so make sure you have some ventilation going on.

If you start with wine you can easily do partial mash with that equipment. Just slowly work you way to all grain with the equipment.

Wine is way easier to make than beer. It would be a good place to start and work on your sanitation and fermentation.

Don't use bread yeast. It will ferment sure, but it will taste like ass. Recipe looks good just go out and buy some mead yeast or even beer yeast at a home brew shop.

saved.

what equipment do i need? and should i buy it or are home made kits viable alternatives?

would wine yeast work as well?

home made kits give you everything you need, but there is no reason to buy them in a kit unless your getting a better deal. typically the hops in those kits is pretty low grade too, your best off trying to find hops as locally as possible, or very high quality ones imported from places famous for hops. Even then you need to have better info than I do to know which are the good ones. in other words, I wouldn't do but might not be such a bad idea.

for wine all you need is something to ferment in and some bottles and a corker. some 3/8 hose would be good to have.

Beer you would just need to add a 5 gal pot to boil. This would be your most simple setup.

google beer citadel partial mash. it a good step by step guide i like to refer to from time to time

This would

I think the beer kits are good to get for a first brew because it help to learn some basic procedures. My local home brew shop sell old kits that i just dont trust.

check out northernbrewer dot com for equipment kits and beer kits
