My family and I (wife and 3 kids) are currently living in a double wide mobile home that is owned by wife’s brother.
Some background on my situation:

I work as an engineer and my wife stays at home with our kids. I changed jobs 6 months ago, and relocated back to mine and my wife’s hometown. My wife’s brother previously lived in this trailer we are currently in before they moved into another home. When I decided to relocate, to prevent having to go through the trouble of buying another home, I approached my brother in law about moving in here and making his payment for him.
The trailer is a 1999 model, 4 bedroom, 2 bath. In decent shape overall, but needs some work. The roof was a major issue but I was able to get him to file an insurance claim and get the entire roof redone.

I am considering just buying the trailer from him, he owes roughly $27k on it still, and would perhaps finance $10k more on top of the payoff amount for other various repairs. I understand I would likely never see a return on that as it is an older mobile home but I really do not want to consider buying or building a house right now. This would allow me to have an affordable place to live as long as I am here at this current job. Should I buy the trailer from him or continue just making monthly payments to my brother in law on his loan?

consider doing whatever maximizes the amount of money that stays in your extended family and out of the bank. I assume that means buying it.
