Hey /diy/, I work at an Italian restaurant, and we throw away a lot of corks. I've been pocketing them to save them from the trash and now I've amassed a lot of corks. Are there any cool projects I can do with all these corks? I collect about 2 or 3 per night. So far I've thought of making a corkboard and a trivet but I'd love to hear other ideas.

You shouldn't really reuse corks for winemaking.

Awesome

you can always make a thingy that goes under hot pots so it doesn't burn the table. Just take a picture frame or something similar, remove the glass, and glue all the corks down. Works really well.

He's saying it wrong. He means an infection. Putting holes in a balloon and sitting it on top isn't the most sanitary way of making an airlock.

Sometime moisture builds up,then bacteria or wild yeast gets in it,and ruins your mead/wine.

You'll be able to tell though,it'll usually look funky as hell and smell bad. If you want to make small batches of stuff just go ahead and buy the gallon jars with a proper bung and airlock. Not more than $10,and reusable.

No, that's not what I mean.
I mean that you will get a yeast infection from all that yeast that you're going to be using making that.
The body is not meant to even intake sugar.
Natural sugars are fine, but not cane sugar, even if it's the bestest, organicest, sugar around.

You get yeast infections from wild airborne yeast whenever there are favorable conditions on your body. If you have dark, warm damp areas constantly, that's your own problem.

It still seems to me you have no idea how any of that works. The balloon forms an airlock on the container. Meaning only the excess CO2 gets vented. The yeast then eats the sugar in the anaerobic environment, producing CO2 and alcohol as byproducts. After the months of fermentation, the yeast dies off from lack of nutrition(sugar, nitrogen) or due to the antiseptic nature of the drink itself. That still only leaves very small amounts of sugar in the drink.

People aren't chugging down containers full of cups of sugar and yeast. All that would really do is give you bad gas.

something like this but maybe on a smaller scale. Apparently artists that work with cork may dye some corks with wine that gives a really dark color for specific shades.

The "yeast" from a yeast infection is of the Candida genus including Candida Albicans, which isn't the same as Brewer's/Baker's yeast, of the Saccharomyces genus.

You don't get yeast infections from saccharomyces, though it can spoil sugary food (big surprise) and candida can contaminate wine etc. when brewing.

>Soundproof
Interesting. I work in a restaurant too and came to /diy/ for the purpose of making a cork thread like this. Not only that but I've been collecting egg cartons for soundproofing too. I wonder if I could combine corks and egg cartons for super soundproofing?

More to the point, I have mainly tapered champaigne corks, not cylindrical wine corks and I imagine you'd need a metric fucktonne of corks to properly soundproof 5 walls.

So, fuck that.

>> No.267237

>>267207
I don't think actual egg cartons will be of any use in soundproofing a room.

Shotgun shell bombs seem pretty fun. (Pic related) I'm planning on buying some shells in the future just to make these. 100% sure I wouldn't be using them on a crowd of rowdy people, unlike described in the picture. Just hang out with a bro and chuck 'em as far as I can and then duck down behind a rock and have a hell of a lot of laughs.
