Yeah, as you are required to ID every transmission and while transmitting in certain intervals, there is no requirement for them to ID when no activity happens.

Something from tecsun would be ok, I have the PL-660 and it's fine with an external antenna to listen to HAM or you get a FT-817 or FT-818 it also does VHF and UHF, all modes (although I am not sure it does the broadcast wideband AM) but you also need an external speaker or headphones cause the embedded one sucks ass (too small) and an antenna...

Is it okay if the ends of my antenna are looped to tie them down? I want to make a random wire shortwave antenna and I have a functionally unlimited supply of 24awg cross connect wire. I work at a facility with handheld radios and I've been trying to get my new UV-5R to transmit. I can receive transmissions but I cannot transmit on our frequency which is 469XXX, but I can transmit on the lower amateur bands. My older UV82 can transmit and recieve with no problem. Is my new UV5R factory locked to not transmit above the amateur band?

hey guys, any tips for my antenna? I'm very new to this. I'm trying to listen to shortwave on a Tecsun PL-310ET. I ran a wire from my garage to the window, and fed it inside. The end has an alligator clip crimped to it to hook to the little telescoping antenna. It works GREAT for FM, but for Shortwave it's got a shit ton of bleed over from FM stations and lots of noise. I think it might work even better unclipped from the aerial, just with the alligator clip a few inches away. The wire is about 8 feet off the ground and 32 feet long from insulator to insulator. Pic related is the far end (Northeast).

Any tips? It's 24awg and the insulators are just wooden blocks. I have it running through my window to clip to the radio.

It seems the main manufacturers are stuck in the 3 stage superhet era, while truSDX and the like do SDR tech. Inductor coils L1, L2 and that 2000pf capacitor along with that parallel 500pf variable capacitor determined the resonance of that circuit. Modify those to your desired 80M 3.5Mhz band. This circuit serves as a nice demonstration to kill you with it's 900 volts (though low current) supply, but not practical to put on the air. There is no low pass filtering on the output , hence lots of harmonic energy at other harmonic frequencies of 3.5Mhz (7Mhz, 14Mhz...etc).

Try the same circuit using a bipolar or FET Transistor instead and +12volt or so power supply would be much safer. Lots of variations on oscillator designs (Hartley, colpitts, vackar, etc) can be found online.

That circuit oscillator would drift terribly and chirp horribly everytime you pressed the CW key. Not worth the work required when you can find many old tube ham radios at ham fests for cheap.

I just can't wrap my head around which part to pick first when planning a parallel tank for a certain resonance frequency.

An 811 tube running 900 volts on the plate may easily put out over 100+ watts of RF power up thru 30Mhz. A more careful reading of the book you posted refutes your own statement. Miller capacitance is seen at the input of the tube, effective capacitance at the grid is Cg-p*gain. The coil has a ground tap not far from the grid connection, say at the 20% point for, that provides, as an approximation, a factor of 25 reduction in input Miller capacitance as seen by the whole LC circuit. The half to a third mentioned in the book is a bit aggressive for feedback; you'll be eating up a lot of power in your grid leak resistor and grid current will be unnecessarily high. Even at a third, your effective reduction in the Miller capacitance as seen by the tank circuit will be about 9.

Your Rx will likely be terrible, maybe less so on VHF and above. If you have an AM radio you can see if you get a lot of buzzing or other interference with that. If you do, HF will not be worth it. My fucking neighbors have chickens (on a city lot) and their heaters make 80 and 160 unusable.

Zoom out as far as you can to see if there is one single peak or band that saturates the front end. You may have to insert an attenuator to overcome the overload.
Once you have determined there us such a peak (for instance a nearby broadcasting station) you have to add a band stop filter tuned to that frequency.

Did a comparison between my cracked gt-5r w/Nagoya 320a and my new ft5dr w/diamond srhf 40a. Can barely tell the difference in clarity between the two in most cases, in fringe cases I seem to cut through a little better when it's fuzzy on the ft5dr. ft5dr has a much better microphone and speaker. so my voice sounds nicer. That's pretty much all the comparison I can make since the baofeng doesn't have any of the other features. I'm just gonna say what everyone is thinking. Between a $50 and a $500 radio (with attachments in price) If all you are going to do is simplex talking and shitting around with your friends in a 10 mile radius just stick with a baofeng and spend the extra cash on making a baofeng repeater to extend your range if you need it.

If you really want to use that shitty antenna, 84 feet will get you on most bands, but will be deaf on several bands based on my own experience. For counterpoise: 17 feet. Some sources say as long as possible works since you are reliant on the tuner for matching. Amplification is difficult. Clean amplification is even more difficult.
Clean amplification at the microwave frequencies is even harder.
Not to mention that anything in the Ghz range will shit itself if your traces are wider then expected, or squiggle then expected.
