Just salvaged a set of 4 little nixie tubes from an old oscilloscope or something, what should I do with them?

well since you can't identify what they came out of I doubt you have the skills to make something.

HP 3440A voltmeter. Worth about $100-$200 if you want to bother with selling it (I don’t)

Salvaged it from a dumpster at work a few years ago just for the tubes.

Shift register can't handle it. You could use a shift register to control a driver like a 74LS145N.

Just wanted to say fuck you for destroying a nice collector's piece so you can rip a couple bits of it for a shitty clock. As someone who collects calculators, people like you are the scum of the earth.
If you want nixie tubes so badly just buy old stock from any ex-soviet country on eBay, there's plenty.

Nixie tubes are 180VDC or so. You can't drive them directly with TTL logic. At a minimum you need a low side transistor to drive each cathode.

I've done two Nixie clock designs. First one was crude, current limit resistor at each anode and individual cathode drives using aforesaid transistors that was in turn driven by a shitload of 595 shift registers that was in turn run by a microcontroller. There's an ugly software layer that translates the digit(s) you want to the data that's shifted into the 595s. This is a fairly retard proof design because you can start out by just driving one tube with your micro directly, get that part of the circuit working, then get a 595 working with some LEDs, then get the 595 + tube working, then multiple 595s and tubes, etc etc. You do need the space for the 595s and transistors and resistors and etc. A 6 digit clock gets big in terms of board area.

Second design was more sophisticated scanning setup using a transistor anode drive and multiplexed cathode drive. Smaller transistor count because cathodes were shared by all tubes.

In both cases I built my own HV power supply, first was a rectified AC using an AC wall wart into a power transformer backwards, rectified and then fed into 180V of zener diodes in series. Second PS was a boost converter controlled closed loop by the microcontroller.

I recall fucking around with Nixie tubes a few years back when I was just starting to get into making projects.
Made a boost supply from a 555 timer (literally google "555 nixie").
I'll never forget the surprise I got from the shock it gave me when it was only powered by a 9V battery

That's a good thing. Wouldn't build something with nixies without it. I've got my eyes on the IN14, then the IN19A/B/V for symbols. Obscure symbol tubes are cool. Think I'd buy enough tubes to make a two-layer display that I'd connect to any two different tools at once. LCR meter, function generator, voltmeter, ammeter, etc. The communication protocol would probably transmit the BCD values for each digit, the unit, and the prefix. 6 digits + symbols sounds reasonable for home precision.
Also a nice IN9 or IN13 bar graph beneath each one.
