Optimal temperature for a house?

I haven't turned mine on this fall and my house is currently at 57 degrees. I want to see how low of a gas bill I can get.

Not really a thing, it's just personal preference.

The police will show up at your house and break the door in to do a welfare check if you don't turn your heat on and up to at least 68 degrees farenheit throughout the winter. You can face jail time if you don't properly heat your house

Winter set point at 55 F or greater to avoid frozen pipes on the periphery. Other than that, whatever you want.

>> No.2501752

>>2501730
if you set it too low your pipes will freeze depending on how cold it gets
you might think something like 50F is safe but my neighbor had his pipes freeze and burst at 50, for that reason I wouldn't go below 60F

Obviously there's a minimum to keep your plumbing from freezing. But there's no "optimal" temperature as OP is asking.

I've got hot water radiators, not steam, they don't ping like steam.
My piece of shit slumlord has my radiator hooked up to a common area, the entry room, and I'm not going to be paying to heat that.
Can I just turn it off at the valve out there?

Also, I only use my living room really. I keep the heat off most of the day. Should I enclose my living room and turn off all the other radiators, or at least dial them down?

I'm not poor, or that poor, but I also think my heat provides heating for my landlord, but I'm not sure, so I mostly want to fuck him over.

Whatever doesn't promote mold or freeze pipes. The rest is preference until you get old and your body thermal management declines with your circulation.

Somewhat related question. My furnace is hooked up to two thermostats; One for the main living spaces and one for the front porch (which basically no one uses)
Typically, we set the front porch to low 40's to prevent the pipes from freezing but I wonder if we're wasting oil. Do you think we could set it even lower without risk?

where in the world is the word "porch" used to refer to an enclosed heated space. and why not use heat tapes on those pipes and let the "porch" freeze.

>> No.2508035

It was originally an unenclosed porch but was eventually enclosed so it's a porch. I'll look into heat tapes though.

As long as you're comfortable set it wherever you like. You don't need our approval.

Pro-tip: adding humidity to the air will make you feel more comfortable/warm at lower temperatures.

>>2501748
>>2501752
If your house is at 50 and your pipes freeze it's your own fault. Any supply pipes in unconditioned spaces should be insulated and/or have heat tape on them.
Despite what the average knuckle dragger thinks, your pipes do not spontaneously explode the moment it gets to 32 inside. The water is under pressure, which means it won't freeze until around 10 degrees. Your heat would need to be off for a couple days in freezing weather before you'd have a problem.

>>2504820
>Can I just turn it off at the valve out there?
If that radiator has a valve, then sure. Most apartments have heat and hot water included as part of the rent, which is why they tie in stuff like hallways since usually you're not paying for it anyway. Are you paying for the gas to heat your apartment? How would the landlord even figure out the usage on individual radiators?

>>2508027
Add heater cables and insulate pipes, then leave the porch off if no one goes out there.

Reality you wont save that much, get on balanced billing so it will even out through the year. Assumed you've got forced gas air furnace. Down side is mold, the walls/closets will condense and hold moisture behind the furniture or other areas. I've played this game and it does not work. 65 is about as low as you want and it really depends on how tight your house is

How much do you think it will cost to replace your pipes when they burst? Dey air causes all of your door frames to shift. That will cause cracks. Keep the house above 60 man.

66 Degrees with heat pumps in Missouri, I supplement that with a wood burning fireplace. unfortunately I don't have the best wood at the moment, however on a medium burn the upstairs will be about 72 to 74 and the main floor tends to be hover around 68 to 70. I just load it up at around 9pm and the furnace will stay off until 6 or 7 am.
