2031078 No.2031078 [Reply] [Original]

the power might go out for up to a week.

We have about two cords of firewood and an indoor stove.

We have two 20 gallon containers filled with water for flushing the toilet.

We have our tablets charging, cellphones, and a few battery packs like the Halo.

the car is filled with gas I have a few extra gallons of gas for the lawn mower and chainsaws if we need to use that.
we have several bags prepared to move the food outside from the refrigerator if we need to do that.
We have our emergency candles and a butane torch.
Lots of blankets for kiddos
Any other suggestions?

For fuel for the generator, I have 20 gallons in cans, about 20-23 between the generator tank, mower, motorcycles, and ATV. I think this fuel load will last 1 week in my generator. More fuel in the vehicles if I need it. Don't forget to add stabilizer to your fuel. And rotate it out every 4-6 months.

fuel is easily available even when the power is out so i got myself a good size inverter. enough to run the furnace, fridge, and some lights. i matched the capacity to the alternator on my truck so worst case scenario, i have to idle my truck until the power comes back on.

oh, and i changed my sump pump to be backup powered by water. before that we flooded the basement one power outage

A small inverter and deep cycle battery. Run CFL/LED lamps off that rather then dicking with candles.

Idle the car only to charge things. Hook the deepcyle battery up to the car with jumper cables to recharge it when your idling it to recharge other things. Don't idle the car "just to warm up".

Oh yeah, stabilizer it's a fantastic idea. I'm a huge fan of sta bil and seafoam. After repairing a number of small engines because of bad fuel, I also try not to keep too much on hand during the off season. I also only buy non-ethanol fuel for the small engines. It costs an extra 50 to 75 cents a gallon, but worth it.

We have plenty of medicine, we just got $200 with the groceries on Friday, lots of drinking water in the form of fizzy Waters and bottled water.

We charged up the tablets and are extra batteries to make sure the kids would have something to keep them entertained if we're stuck for a week. We let him watch about 2 hours of TV a day and it helps in the cool off for their nap and before bed.

Cell phones/tablets use a negligible amount of power, idling your car for 20 minutes would be enough to refill the car's battery after charging tablets/phones multiple times.

>I don't know what you plan to use your lawn tractor for,
Missing the point.

There are two ways to winterize a gasoline engine.
One is to drain all fuel including the carburetor bowl.
The other is to turn off the fuel and run the equipment until the carburetor bowl is empty. Then fill the fuel tank and add stabilizer.

My mower holds 3 gallons of fuel. I can drain the fuel from the mower and use it in the generator. I can also drain fuel from my motorcycles, ATV and vehicles to use in the generator. If I emptied all of these tanks, then I would need to save more fuel in gas cans. Which I don't want to do because it is more work.
I also have 20 gallons stored in 4 gas cans, Not counting the cars, this gives me about 40 gallons of fuel I can use in the generator.

The generator holds 5 gallons, but will burn about .5 -.75 gallons per hour.

Why do I need a generator?
Well water works on an electric pump
Electric blower moves hot air through the house
Food in the refrigerator will spoil after a few days.

Buncha amateurs in here.... I just topped off all my fuel tanks right after Biden got elected before the prices started going up. Have every piece of equipment/vehicle we own full of fuel and another 4250 gallons of red diesel, 500 gallons of clear diesel, 1300 gallons of gasoline (plus some in gas cans) and probably 1000 gallons of propane left.

Woodstove heat for the house and as much wood as I could ever need for the rest of my lifetime. On a local water system that has a few day reserve in the tank at any given time and is gravity flow off a large hill. If it comes down to it one of us locals could power up the entire water system with a generator because they have a solar panel system that will produce enough electricity to run the place as long as the inverter sees line voltage coming in.

I have two welder/generators. One is a 250 amp and the other is a 300 amp. My house as well as my folks place also have solar panels that would produce as long as you power up your inverter. Would still like to get a big diesel or pto powered generator someday.

It's a nice storm so we can't drive on the hilltop road. a state truck comes by once a day to plow and salt it but because we've only had ice, it's not like snow. Two of our experienced neighbors, who work for emergency services and drive 4x4 trucks, have already slid into the woods trying to descend the hill. We have a regional/neighborhood online forum in which they were discussing this. We've had snow about seven or eight times this year so far, this is just really different with the ice.

it looks like power is being restored as rapidly as it goes out and the fire should keep us warm if we have problems. it turns out that I'm very fortunate to have split so much wood last summer and this fall. The tree that I started to split in July was nearly dead so it didn't have very much sap in it in the wood is burning like it's had plenty of time to season.

As a permanent coldfag, I have some ideas/advice that might be worth something
>if your pipes and such are safe, choose one room to heat so that you can save fuel and be warmer
>KEEP YOUR ELECTRONICS WARM. On your body or in a heated area, otherwise your batteries will have about 1/4 the juice
>get a wireless charger if your phone supports it. The temperature swings can cause condensation on the ports that will not allow you to charge your phone with a cable
>get a generator if power outages are common. Use it for wells, lighting, charging batteries, microwave, etc. Also get a 12v inverter and deep cycle battery if you want to watch movies or anything
>if you are really concerned about the snowfall and have a 4wd vehicle plus winch, you can pack the snow down solid as it falls. You can get stuck if you do it incorrectly, but doing it every inch or two back and forth should pack it down well enough. This will turn to ice when it heats up, but i can't imagine ice lasts long in texas
>if heat goes out, put your drinking water in a freezer or cooler to insulate it. Boil some of the water and pour it back in when it starts to get icy. Put frozen food outside where animals cant get it and it will stay frozen

I think you're over complicating things.

A wood stove and 2 cord should be plenty.
Sweaters, extra blankets, close doors to rooms you don't need to heat.

I'm assuming you're on a well, so a power outage would affect your water supply?

I don't get it.
I'm from Florida, bought a house in Austin this Summer. Certainly no cold weather expert.

The day before the cold snap I went to Home Depot.
Barely anyone there. Every insulation and plumbing product fully stocked.
Bought pipe insulation foam and foil bubble insulation. Bought power inverters at AutoZone (plenty on shelves). Spent that evening closing crawl space vents, covering PVC and pex with foam, and putting proper insulation between the porch and the main crawlspace. Also put foam on the exterior hose bibs and put up windbreaks. Just followed advice from plumbing youtubers from the North. It took maybe 2 hours to winterize.

Lost power for two nights but our crawlspace temp gauge stayed stable at 45 F. The upstairs stayed at about 55. Our house is 80 years old, no true subfloor, basically just shiplap and plaster as wall insulation.

When it got to 9f outside with a -14 windchill, I dripped outside faucets+the indoor faucets on the exterior walls and set an alarm to wake up every 3 hours to pulse the water at full pressure for 1minute to clear any potential ice.

Now we have power back. No signs of frozen pipes. Plenty of food because we have 6 week stockpile since we didn't want a repeat of shortage at start of pandemic and had learned our lesson.

I feel bad for renters who had little control of their facilities, but some of my neighbors+my in-laws up in DFW didn't drip or cover up their crawl space vents and had all their pipes freeze.

Sorry for the blog post but just pisses me off. The state, the cities, ERCOT, and the NPC customers all shit the bed.

How absurd. I deal with a much longer and colder winter every year and I do literally nothing to "winterize" my house. Also our local public services don't completely collapse due to cold and snow either.

Texans have some weird hubris and just don't think anything bad can happen to them. I think that comes from living in easy times for so long. Its fun to poke fun about not knowing pipes can freeze and shit. But not having a week or 2 worth of food in the house? No generator?

mylar space blankets and tealight candles.

you sit indian style against a wall, you wrap the space blanket around you, tucking it under your knees/feet making a tent.

you light the tealight candle and put it between your legs.

that will keep you warm, if not sweating for as long as the candle burns, be careful not to let the flame touch the space blanket.

other than that what is the smallest room you have? you might have to hoe out a closet and pack you and your family in it. body heat will keep you warm in small spaces.

hands in armpits when your fingers get cold, even better hands placed inside your pants on your crotch.

when wrapped with blankets and sleeping bags, being nude or in your underware is better than fully clothed.

people are freaking out about this cold. ski lodges and cabins seldom need a fire going if there is enough people packed in the room, and they aren't insulated other than being made out of logs and the spaces between logs packed with moss to keep out the cold draft.

i mean worse case scenario, you could go find a river or pond, throw your kids head first in the water so they get divers reflex which will put them in a coma for a bit before they just die, they can ride it out that way until its over.

Oh okay, so instead of paying taxes you want to buy all the supplies you need for survival yourself and deal with weeks of no power and freezing temps while you eat frozen spaghettios from a can? Instead of paying a small amount to the government every year to ensure emergency services are well funded and to ensure the grid is properly winterized, maintained, there's adequate redundancy, and operators are properly trained so you never even have this rolling blackout problem in the first place?

I personally think that's completely retarded but then again that's why I don't live in Texas.

/diy/ is not about basic survival. /diy/ is about building new shit and innovating. I don't want to live in a society where you have to fulfill all your basic survival needs yourself. That's retarded and would literally consume all your waking hours. Advanced technology literally cannot be developed if we spend every day worrying about how the fuck we're going to eat tomorrow. There's a reason why society spend tens of thousands of years being agrarian and modern technology didn't start to develop until we began figuring out how to not waste all of our time growing food.

Two 20gal jugs

I picked up another 250gal IBC tote for a mostly unrelated subject, but when I'm done it'll still be used for potable water storage.

See if you can pick one of these up, then set it up off the ground somehow so that you can crack the valve and let some water out for whatever you need water for.

Yoyd be surprised how quickly 20gal disappears, especially when you're either flushing it or drinking it.

Your local water company uses pumps to push water around whether it's from the bottom of the well to a holding tank, one holding tank to another, or just boosting pressure because they dont have enough head on the tanks, they need a ton of power. A lot of cities have completely overtaxed theirbsotrage systems too. Holding tanks arent actually holding they need to pump in constantly, they're just regulating pressure.
