Sup /diy/,

Anyone familiar with the Amprobe 6030 wire tracer? Would this be suitable for 450VAC general wire tracing on a military ship?

I've spent many days hand-over-handing cables and dealing with shitty diagrams. I think this could be a great time saver.

it will work fine, they make tracers you can hook strait up to the wire while HOT.

this kind of tracer doesn't get a lot of range as compared to a direct connection de-energized. that is the signal bleeds.

the claw clamps around the wire and creates a signal by magnetism.

you can also trace with a multi-meter but it is a little more manual and requires some mental mapping.

thanks m8. yeah the usual method is hooking one end to ground and testing for continuity. but thats limited in practice.

This model has a direct hookup with hot/cold wires. the signal clamp is an additional option.

I just to want to make this clear if you get a tracer for while cold, you could save $1000, so that is pretty hefty investment and I would probably ask to have that be something purchased by Uncle Sam and be a tool owned by the navy/coast guard/merchant marines. I know that such tools were only owned by foreman/the company when I worked as an electrician.

Anon I understand you're angry, but this isn't the right path.

Time saving and working smart is a big deal for us. We don't work on the clock or get OT or anything. Not spending all day hand over handing cables = happy work center

I don't think you understand how much cable is on a ship and the fucked up places they are routed through.

It's a giant pain in the ass to get the Navy to buy shit like this. You go through hours of work to present the purchase only for it to get denied.

No electrical/electronics division on my last ship had anything close to this. But yes I agree that capital purchases like this should be put into budget and owned by the organization.
