I need to dig a 15 foot narrow hole. The longest post holers I can find are only 5 foot. How do I dig deeper?

You need an auger.

Yup.

OP why do you need a 15' deep narrow hole?

How well do augers do with small rocks? I want to dig some deep holes for passive geothermal heating my greenhouse but I dont want to pay anyone.

The bigger the rock, the bigger the problem. Try to get an auger head diameter equal to twice the size of the typical stone.

Try taping three together

>> No.1996951

> Use this digger to dig a 5' hole but widen the edges so it's more like 8" diameter instead of 6".
> Dig a 2nd 5' hole next to it but only widen it to 7", and a 3rd that's just 6".
> Drop the 6" hole into the 7", then the combined hole into the 8".

Easy.

It's gotta be an auger. See if you can rent one for cheap, or try and make a friend who has one (this is what I did)

doesn't matter how long the post hole digger is, once you get about 3 feet down you can't open the handles to remove the dirt.

Have you ever touched a post hole digger in your life? Think about how they operate. You cant open them because the handles ride up the walls.

>>1996848
Spoon shovel, but it really sucks. Renting an augur is better idea

How about make the hole a bit bigger there genius? I can drop my post hole diggers into a hole to where the tops of the handles are a foot down from ground surface and still open them and pull out a full scoop of dirt.

About 4-4.5' deep is all the deeper I need to dig usually. Any deeper and there won't be enough railroad tie sticking out of the ground to use for fence.

defeats the purpose of a post hole now doesn't it? tall narrow hole? course 99% of post holes only need to be about 2 feet deep.

don't know if you'll get 3m from a hand auger, even a 6" head. It's going to be real stiff once you hit native soil

Power auger.
Use extensions.

Connect holes.

What kind of faggoty posts are you putting in the ground boy? A railroad tie fits nicely in a 12" auger hole. Gives you a bit of room around it to tamp the dirt in tight around the post after you position it within the hole. You are tamping the dirt back in aren't you?

Rent, hire or make a well drilling rig. Manual well digging is not particularly difficult (I've driven wells that deep and flushed out the sand with water while pounding the well casing down) but it's tedious.

/diy doesn't mean make everything yourself, it means doing the work yourself. Now go study how to dig wells.
