Hi /diy/nosaurs

I want to make my own incubator but I want it to hatch and feed my chickens for 52 weeks in a completly dark room. 0% light. Period

I want this so I can do a cheaper chicken farm that requires no electricity, no sun, and low manteinance.

Is this possible?

Will I save money in using less sun light /electric light?

Will the chickens eat less and grow bigger?

Also, I have a completly dark basement that I can use. but the problem is that all the carbon bioxide will acumulated in there I think...

Also, I want it to make it outside, so in case everything fails, I'll burn the shit out of those fucking pesky chickens

Or should I extirpate chicken eyes when they born? Would this be the same as using dark rooms?

1) Less electricity cost
2) Chickens would eat only because they are hungry, not because it is daytime, so there, another less food cost

I am not sure of the reasons above, that's why I want to do this experiment

What you're planning on doing is cruelty to animals, and you should feel bad for wanting to do it. How would you like it if your parents decided it was too expensive to have lights on just for you, and made you grow up in absolute darkness? Don't be an asshole.

dont listen to all these bleeding heart faggot liberals

it will be cheaper to just take there eyes out, but they can still tell when its day and night through temperature fluctuation. if you are worried about gas buildup in your basement, get an intake fan and an outtake fan for your basement.

>> No.195074

Pretty sure you're trolling but I think this experiment sounds interesting. I am all for it.

BAWWWWW CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!!! Yeah, I've been to hundreds of chicken farms. This is no more cruel.

>> No.195077

Eyes seems like it will have negative side effects. Trauma can cause more eating.

Basement would work fine. Just put an exhaust vent in.

For heat look into a passive solar water heater. Black pipes full of water heat up in sun, go into basement and release heat. Stirling engine for free energy.

I am not an animal torturer, this is science for christ sake!

I'll do 3 hatcheries

1) It will have natural sun light
2) It will have only artificial light
3) It won't have neither natural nor artificial light

I will put 40 chickens on each hatchery, and weight them every week.

I still need to figure it out how to feed chickens in complete darkness, I have two options

1) put floor tiles with an especial kind of texture (metal ribblets) that will make a path right to the feeders

2) force feed the god damn chicks with a permanent tube inside their beaks, so that they wont move

"no trolling"

Foie Gras is made by force feeding ducks in dark rooms

Not in complete dark rooms, but just naturally dark

I'll try to do the same with chicks so now I will make a 4) hatchery

Foie Gras only work because geese are migratory, and the force feed them so the will eat more, as such wasting not saving food. Using a feeding tube and keeping them in the dark is just gonna make unhealthy chickens, and an unhealthy chicken means shitty eggs and shitty meat. Think along the same line as rickets but with chickens. You aren't gonna save yourself work or money compared to just letting them free roam outside where they can find there own food in the form of insects and seeds, and they'll be healthier (read tastier) if you do.

YOU! I like you. You amused me.

To the rest of the world:
I myself think it is not cruel. They are possessions. It's like having a gardening tool... would anyone get butthurt and all else if you kept your gardening tool in the dark with no water, food, or light? The answer is no.

1) How will you incubate the chicks without light? Infrared lights? Will they be high efficiency or not? If they are low efficiency, they will also display visible light.

2) You may or may not save money in using less sunlight or false visible light. It depends on your equipment.

3) I have no fucking idea.

This is going to fail miserably OP.
It won't work out that they will eat more in the dark. Having kept chickens indoors, anytime the lights were out completely, they just slept.
The amount of work you'd have to put into force feeding them in the dark will negate any money 'saved' by raising them like this.

If you want to raise cheap chickens, buy a cheap shed, put up a couple 2x4's for roosting, then just let them go. Let them free range eat, don't bother with buying feed or anything. Semi wild chicken raising would be the cheapest. If you have decent trees they can get into, you don't even need the shed. Get the birds early spring, butcher by fall.
The next few weeks would be best for getting free chickens that are already feathered out, saving time on keeping the babies warm in a brooder. Idiots buy the chicks around Easter, because animals make great toys, and when they grow up and shit up the house they get rid of them any way they can. Keep an eye on Craigslist for them. A rooster and a few hens will make more chicks on their own, no need for an incubator.
