Beginner here. Can I avoid using these pieces of shit? Is there a simpler solution for nice cuts?

Just draw a pencil line and cut the thing straight.

To be honest, you're going to see plenty of marking tools, jigs etc. in wood working.

If you just go "this is STUPID, is there an EASIER way?" all the time then you're actually going to make it harder for yourself and lower the quality of your work just because you feel like not using tools.

Get a miter saw. Then you can avoid using a shitty miter box. They are all over the place these days, I bet you could pick up a used one for $50 or less...

I bought a 10" refurbished Ryobi miter saw (pic related) probably 12 years ago for less than $100. It's still my go to saw for quick miters, bevels, and trim work. I only get the 12" sliding miter saw out for wider stuff that the 10" doesn't have enough reach to cut through.

How is it DIY if you use a tool?

Are you wanting to DIY your own miter saw or are you wanting to DIY whatever you are making that needs miter cuts?

Because you can go back as far as you want to by not buying any tools and only digging shit out of the ground with a stick you found if you want to go as far as that... I'd prefer to use the proper tool for the job and actually accomplish the task at hand.

The miter box could be used with a shooting board/plane to true up and refine the surface of the cut for fine work. I think a lot of what makes a miter box work is just the visual guiding aspect.

True... the tree DIY'ed that stick by converting minerals in the ground and sunlight into cellulose to build its structure. How dare I use something I didn't DIY myself!

who the fuck actually still uses hand wood saws (hacksaws are still handy) and a miter box? just use a fucking miter saw. If you're a poor and don't have one just mark out your line and use a skilsaw

Yes. Use a bevel gauge and a marking knife to cut a groove in the wood, then put your saw into the groove and start cutting.

You didn't 3D-print your own miter saw?

Have you waxed the miter box so the saw dosent grab? Or you can use silicone spray on your saw too.
