Here's a simple beginner's project.

DIY speakers. Find speaker drivers, build a housing out of MDF, job done. Can easily make an expensive system by ordering the equivalent parts for a tenth of the price and building the thing yourself, however you damn well please.

So, anyone have any idea what drivers work best? Tips and tricks?

There is ALOT more involved than you could imagine. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/144025-secret-building-good-2-way.html - read this thread for some starters.

i would suggest a good fullrange driver for a beginners' project, the Vifa TG9FD-10-04 for example. Its cheap and actually really good. Will obviously not move mountains due to its size, but you could build a subwoofer later if you want more bass. I recommend a bass reflex cabinet at around 8 litres tuned to around 55-60 Hz.

the top box has a Vifa TG9 in it, here only playing above 80 Hz.

Build this 3" 20watt full range, active speaker, and a second one that is passive.

goes from about 100Hz and up. it just needs a low cut filter (active) to improve sound quality at high volume due to distortion from low freq.

they were cheap to make, and fairly easy, took some time though.

Under construction.
I recall it being 16mm.

The thing about speakers is that you can't just toss them in any old housing, there's an actual science to building speaker cabinets.
