Start slow. Try making a chisel, hammer and such first.
If you're looking for forge building materials northwest hardware usually sells firebrick and refractory cement.
Northern tool sells a cheap 15 dollar 15 pound anvil for starting.

Also like the earlier guy said, start out simple man. Make simple tools like chisels, knives, daggers, hammers, etc.

Amateur swordsmith here. I fucking hate when they do that shit. My work is only slightly above what a Rwandan bushman would use, but I literally make everything so that it could be used if the pommel breaks. Thick, full tang. I've yet to have one break on me. Pic related. I modeled the machete I made last month on one of these. 29'' blade and since I'm too much of a novice to get that hook in the back, I just turned it into a spike, a-la and Uruk-hai sword.
