so my neighbor threw out a 62" DLP TV. Needs a new bulb. How shall I get past the ballast so I can manually pump light into the TV?

You wont be able to. The light required for a DLP is super bright and focused. Just look up a new bulb and replace it yourself.

I did my Samsung and it was super easy. Cost of bulb was around $100. Just be sure to wear latex gloves so you dont get any fingerprints or smudges on the new bulb.

This is a last ditch effort to see if this TV is even worth throwing 200 dollars into. I don't know if the color wheel is out either.

Just buy a fricken bulb.

Is it worth repairing? It depends how desperate you are for a TV. These DLP televisions have shitty image quality compared to a modern LCD or Plasma TV. Personally, I'd put the cost of a new bulb into the bank, and start saving up for a better tv.

Use an LED. One of those several watt ones. Not the 100 watt, but whatever gives you enough lumens. Otherwise, see if there's a Fresnel lens on the screen and go play in the sun with it.
