Tiled my basement years ago so I hauled a bunch of tile and thinset. Wife came home with a kids playground one day. Ive helped a few people move and towed a trailer to help my brother move. Moved some exercise equipment for family. Hauled a fair portion of 2x6s for the shed I built.

Once I buy a utility trailer I will do more towing than hauling.

Trucks hold their value better than other cars, IDK what to tell you. Other than to hit up auctions or be willing to go pretty far to pick one up.

You can get crazy deals on relatively lightly-used government vehicles every now and again. Doubly so if you're willing to put up with an alternative fuel system. The 2500HD mentioned in >>1778923 runs on CNG, had 50,000 miles on it, almost no cosmetic damage, and cost me $5,000. Tank was expired and they're not cheap to replace, but still.

Also, $312 for registration for the thing, what a load of shit. Fucking California, man.

Depends heavily on the truck in question. Pretty high (over market by like $3k-$5k for a base-model 150 or similar in good condition.

Little high/about right for a 250/350 with a couple options.

KBB is your friend. Being realistic about your expectations also helps. If all you really need is a beater to haul equipment and material, you can easily get a POS with 200k+ miles for under $2000. My first truck had 235k on it, wouldn't shift into first gear from a stop unless the engine was off, and looked like it had been left in field for the better part of two years (mostly because it had). But it ran well enough to get stuff from point A to point B and I only paid $600 for it. I'd still have it if I hadn't let it run out of coolant, blow a piston ring, and sold it for $300. Or if I had the space to keep it while I fixed it up.

Either way, if you have the capacity to deal with the extra maintenance a similar truck would require, you can go really cheap (potentially even free) and still get something useful.

What’s the upper cargo weight limit for something ranger/s-10/4cyl sized? I’d like to get a regular base model half ton if I can but there’s a ‘99 4cyl Mazda ranger with like ~120k mi in my area for around $2.5k. Mostly just looking for something to use to haul shit out of my garage and material to lightly renovate my house. Might try and hitch a trailer to whatever I buy eventually but I don’t have anywhere to put a flatbed so that’s a huge maybe for the long term.

>What’s the upper cargo weight limit for something ranger/s-10/4cyl sized?

Not much. They're usually rated for not much more than 1000lb of cargo, and maybe another 50% on top if that cargo is a trailer. Check out the GVWR and GCWR of the model in question for "exact" numbers.

You CAN haul more than that...but you really shouldn't. That being said, odds are very good you don't need more capacity if you can't point out _specifically_ why that's not enough. It's cheaper to just rent a truck for the once-in-a-blue-moon heavy tow than to deal with owning one.

Assuming the thing's in good condition, $2,500 is a fair price. You might be able to negotiate another couple hundred or so off, but that's about what I'd expect just off the top of my head. KBB backs this up.

Yeah my poor old pickup has definitely earned it's keep around here! I did recently get a 1994 International 4700 to take over heavy towing duty, but I'll have to do a bunch of work to it before I start using it. It has the Spicer 7 speed (6+ is what it is known as) and it likes to pop out of 5th gear. And then I'll have to shorten it up, build a flatbed for it, and do some body work and paint.

Then after hauling that hay to the corrals I loaded up 20 sticks of 2-3/8" drill stem and took it back home to the shop.
