My front door doesn't have this rectangular recessed area, and I want to install a new knob of the style that needs the recessed area. Do I dremel it out?

Chisel.

Or a utility knife if it's a cheapy door. Given that it has not recess, it probably is.

These or a flathead and some slight taps from a hammer. Do the outline of if first then cut towards and you should be fine. Just be delicate

>screwdriver
Anon, why on earth use a screwdriver if you have a chisel?

He's talking about a flathead (or "minus") screwdriver.

the question still stands
a screwdriver is not a chisel

the apartment i moved into last year had some stupid fucks "renovate" it and every single slot in the door frames for the doors to latch into is cut either too high or low so the doors don't latch. every single fucking door in the place is like this, including the front door. you literally can't lock the front door unless you pull upwards on the handle while you turn the key.

You could drill holes and then clean it up with one of these

Is it a bad idea to try to chisel the door while it's still hung? I don't really want to pull it all the way off if I don't absolutely have to

tape the plate that came with the doorknob where you want, then smash it a few times with a sledgehammer. makes a perfect fit

Just looked up the Peter sellers video on knifewalls, I think I get it now.

>Mark rectangle with pencil
>Use utility knife to strike knifewalls a couple mm deep
>Use chisel to chop some wood out against the knifewalls
>Chisel out the rest of the waste wood

Thanks dudes, I'd never woodworked before, but I feel confident on this one now.

it's a chisel when you don't have a chisel and all you need to do is make a 1/8" recess in a cheap pine door.

It's a bugger doing up wood screws with a chisel, I'll tell you that.

You haven't been reading /diy/ long enough.

Obviously you need to 3d print an entire door to fit around the lock, or, if you want something with a better finish CNC a door from a solid block of hardwood...
