https://www.nonstopsystems.com/radio/frank_radio_antenna.htm
- A standard Slinky coil resonates as a quarter wave between 7 and 8 MHz, when it is stretched to a length between 5 and 15 feet.
- 2 x 6m Slinky dipole appears to be only 20% longer than a same-size wire dipole.
- As with all antennas, operation at a resonance frequency is not required, it only makes matching to a feedline easier.
Conclusion: Not worth it.

How the hell do you lightning proof an end fed shortwave wire? It comes out of my kitchen window and is tied to a tree branch about 40 feet away. A basic grounding rod is an easy and efficient way to protect against an induced current but the correct answer is "take your antenna the fuck down, you idiot" because even if you ground your antenna par excellence a near miss that close to your house can still fry your electronics. What if I told you there was an easier way to construct antennae?

All you need is a nail in a tree at preferably 2/3rds its height and a wire connected to the nail. Using this setup, in 1904 George Owen Squier picked up distant signals that very few man-made antennas could receive from across the Atlantic. Few believed his claims at first, assuming the wire itself was the real antenna, so he simply insulated the wire from the nail and voila, the signal was lost.

Pictured is a similar setup that doesn't use a nail, possibly more effective.

As mentioned in the FAQ you need certain skills to avoid killing yourself and avoid unintentional interference. You might be chatting with someone and at the same time jam emergency bands. That will cause the authorities to come down on you like a ton of bricks.

You are tossing this out to people who can't pass a Tech Amateur Radio test and buy a Baomeme radio to talk on their local repeater?

It's a very step by step guide to understanding everything from wavelength, ground wave, sky wave, antenna theory, the different modulations, line of site, and gives a reader a good fundamental to see if this a hobby for them or not.

I just assume anyone on /diy/ isn't a total idiot (except Bepis) and is smart enough to grasp the manual.

My bad Chief. I looked at the link, I was in the wrong accusing you of being too technical. I'm not sure I was wrong about estimating the radio-savvy of the readers of this thread. It frustrates me they can cure it so easily with the tests and practice.

>>1678417
No need to apologize, friend. I have noticed most people my age or younger are clueless about what a radio is or how it works. The guy I linked that manual to wanted learn the basics and I think that manual is a mighty fine beginner's guide.

Watching the grammar and prose of /HAM/ threads, I suspect there's a solid core of 15-20 of us Tech or higher while every 3rd or 4th post is a newbie. (I took Forensic Writing Analysis in university and can spot many posters by their writing style.)

If we want our hobby to continue in this day and age, we have to realize there are 18-25 year old dudes here who have never tuned an analog radio, let alone ever used the AM Mode in their car radio, so I try to be as helpful as I can and don't mind walking them through the baby steps. I used to be an FTO, so I have the patience for it.

With that, if you answer honestly and type it out like you normally would any other comment you make, I can honestly link you to another post (if you have one in this thread) with fair certainty.

You have to be completely honest in your answer, though. It's a fairly simple forensic technique, and I guarantee you can spot my posts here simply by looking at my sentence structure, paragraphing, tone, prose and etiquette alone.

Yes, and in interesting ways. And there are also other dangers like RF dumped into your skin. Happened to me once, not fun.

>I don’t really understand jamming emergency lines though.
It is about harmonics. If you have a transmitter set to 1 MHz, the harmonics will be at 2, 4, 6, 8 ... MHz. You will emit junk there but that does not mean you can also listen to those frequencies.

>Can you really listen into police radios and civilian cellphones?
Yes, but for that a simple SDR is plenty. Most of these are encrypted and you will need some extra stuff to decrypt that which is not trivial. You can at least see that there is traffic and with some effort do traffic analysis.

what if i want to step it up to an antenna analyzer though? the solutions for analyzer seem a lot more piecemeal and a lot more expensive to me, anyone recommend any?
my quick search led me to think dx engineering AA-600 would be good again until dabbling with upper uhf and beyond.

Thanks for that. Didn't know it existed. However, I looked at the manual and discovered my dumbass never learned what that the very first button on the top left (RX ANT) is to let you set either antenna input as an RX-Only antenna and use the other for TX.

The /k/ thread told me to ask you guys...I've been looking into picking up a handheld to start this whole hobby but I'm not really looking to spend over 100$ because I'm not sure how in depth I'm going to dive into it or if I'll like it or not.

Should I just grab a UV-5X3 and a good antenna? I'm in FL and it would be used mostly as an emergency/hurricane/SHTF radio. I'm open to suggestions, but I'm leaning to the X3 because it's tri-band and takes all the UV series accessories.

I plan on getting the required credentials if I like it. However chances are I'd just be using it to listen to whatever without broadcasting.

How tall can I go with an unguided EMT mast vs a guided one?
I have a mount point I attached to my house that has about 3 feet of space between the top and bottom clamp, and currently have a 21ft piece of 1 1/2 sch40 in it, but that's far too heavy to double.
Not sure yet how tall I need to go but whats there isn't enough.
Also the only antenna on it is a log periodic, about 2sqft of surface, so meh.

My current plan is to get five 10ft pieces of 2in, cut one into four and slit those down the length so I can slide them on as couplers and just screw it together. something something 40ft stick. If I have to guide it, I have a fren who does a ton of fishing and can probably get me something suitable, like deep sea stainless braid or something.

Hey guys!
I'm looking to build my first antenna for a Baofeng and looking for more information. For example what are the advantages of a J Pole compared to a 1/4 wave ground plane? I've looked into antenna calculators but couldn't find any info about the diameter of the copper pipe. Is there a way to tune Antennas without an swr meter? And the final question: Are there any clear cut advantages to 70cm over 2m? With the testing I've done with my friend it seems that 70cm has higher range or is it just because the standard antenna is better suited for it? Tanks a Lot!

Still considering the 5X3 or the F8HP. How much of a difference will the extra 3 watts of output power the F8HP has make? Is it worth sacrificing the third band the 5X3 has?

Also, looking at this image. The 5X3 seems to offer more features over the F8HP. The listing also says the 5X3 has "VOX Talk Around Mode Busy Channel Lock-Out (BCLO) Transmission Time Out Channel Receive Only (TX OFF) Frequency Reverse Squelch Tail Elimination (STE) Work Mode (Selectable VFO/ Menu Lockout)". However the F8HP looks to have a better display.

As for the cable, it's a nightmare. If it kinks, it's kinked for life, connectors that fit it are expensive and it's difficult to feed in general.

I spent like $500 on a cellular repeater with hopes of getting cell service at my house, and I do but cant transmit out for shit. 10kbps, barely sends texts. I need good service to be able to work from home and stuff.
My options are a shortish mast on top of my house which I have now but can make a bit taller, but I need as little loss as possible, a hill behind the house which I can construct a 75ft tower on, but it is roughly 350 feet of cable length and I can only tolerate a loss of 10dbm there.

I'm also looking at kits that convert the rf to fiber and back to RF but I have no idea how any of this works. if that works how I want, i can run it up to a different hill about 1.5 miles away using all fiber and get damn good signal.
idk if I can even use 1 5/8 heliax and see the super low loss at such a tiny transmit power.

It isnt the best it could be because the range away from the indoor side is very poor, but it covers the room well enough.

I'm also not sure where to point the antenna or if I should change to a omni/pad because I do not have LOS at all. In fact this could be an additional issue because I just pointed the antenna (log-periodic) towards the closest city.
