Hi /diy/,
pic related are the outcomes of my first shots at welding. Is my setup (next few posts) okay?
Any tips on how to improve?

FIRST OF ALL, ARE YOU FUCKING STICK WELDING? HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET THAT MUCH POROSITY????? DO YOU HAVE THE FUCKING GROUND IN THE POSITIVE TERMINAL? YOU HAVE TO STICK WELD DC ELECTRODE NEGATIVE!!!! SECOND OF ALL, YOU NEED TO CLEAN AS MUCH CORROSION AND OXIDE AS POSSIBLE OFF OF YOUR WELDMENT!! YES I'M FUCKING YELLING AT YOU!

CLEAN THE OXIDE OFF YOUR WELDMENT, TURN YOUR SHIT UP, MAKE SURE YOUR ELECTRODE IS DC NEGATIVE, MAKE SURE YOUR GROUND IS CLOSE TO THE WELDMENT AND FREE FROM CORROSION SO IT MAKES A GOOD CIRCUIT, LAY YOUR ELECTRODE AT AN ANGLE BEFORE YOU STRIKE AN ARC THEN PULL IT BACK AND PUSH THAT SHIT OPPOSITE OF THE DIRECTION YOU'RE TRAVELING, THEN GET ON YOUR KNEES AND THANK ME FOR TEACHING YOU THE WAY SHIT IS DONE.

You are using rods that are ment for gas-welding. In europa welding rods for steel are coded like E-42-0-RC-11,

E = elektrode for SMAW
42= yield in N/mm2
(just look for the lowest, strength is not important for practise)
0 = impact test temperture (not important for you)
RC/RR/B = rutile cellulose, Rutile double mantel, basic (get RC or B these are usually easy to weld all position in)
1 = AC and DC
2nd 1 = all position

look for lincoln or böhler (german company) and get the cheapest.

The output voltage of the welder isn't dependent on the rod used, it's in the welder settings.
His welder has low voltage, high current output.

I taught myself to program, it just pisses me off to see these faggots bitch about not being able to find people to work for them yet they won't look in the mirror and see how ridiculous their requirements are, blue collar requirements are honestly worse than white collar. The labor shortage and skills gap narrative that is being pushed is a myth anyways, it is just being spread to get the government to keep the immigrant and visa worker flood gates open to keep wages depressed.
>>1632392
I only care about my income in relation to work required to make that income. I do a lot less work now for almost 4x as much as I made when I was doing manual labor, I can deal with it being boring, I did force myself to sit down for at least 4 hours a day for a few months to learn to program well enough so I could get a job so I can deal with it. If I could make $100 an hour doing manual labor then I would, but I'll stick to the office because I can't.

Howdy, I’m rather new to welding myself, but might as well give you some tips I’ve picked up.
-always know the amperage for your electrodes. Often times there are calculators online to tell you this. Edge toward the higher end of the range.

-use the right electrode size for the material size. A small electrode won’t do too good on thicker material.

-don’t weld galvanized shit. It can kill you, but overall it’s just bad for you.

-start out with low hydrogen rods. Here in americastan they’re called 7018. They can be a bit prissy and you REALLY need to keep them dry, but they work great for starting out. I started and am still working with 6013 and 6011, and it can be a pain in the ass.

-when presenting your welds or just in general, knock the slag off with a chipping hammer and brush them down with a wire brush. It will allow us to get a better look at the structure of the bead as opposed to a slag shell.

-reuse steel for practice. It gets messy, but it’s better than constantly buying steel.

-for the love of nyarlathotep use the right electrodes. What you want are steel welding electrodes for shielded metal arc welding. You’re using gas welding rods.

All in all though, I think with actual electrodes and a bit less current those tacks will look good!

>-don’t weld galvanized shit. It can kill you, but overall it’s just bad for you.
There is no known case of anyone ever dying from zinc fumes. This contrasts with such things as water (drinking two gallons will kill you outright). It just gives most people flu-like symptoms that can last for a few days. No long-term effects. No serious effects. The smoke from the burning flux is more dangerous, and if you're getting enough of it to worry about zinc exposure symptoms should you happen to weld something galvanized, you should improve ventilation regardless. Welding safety is important, and part of that is having an accurate understanding of what risks really are. Plenty of plating materials (cadmium, say, or chrome) are actually dangerous, but zinc is not. It's a good idea to clean it off an area that is to be welded, but that's for avoiding porosity/contamination and comfort, not safety.
