1626650 No.1626650 [Reply] [Original]

I've got this year-old gas leaf blower which was working until 2 weeks ago but won't start anymore. I can't get to the spark plug because everything is cased in plastic, which is held in place with deep T-star bits and I don't have a long, narrow T-star screwdriver.
Anyway my question is, how long should I wait before trying to choke/start it again? The manual says to not pull the crank too many times, but doesn't explain why that is...

>> No.1626660

>>1626650
Give it 10min a restart the process. If you tried to prime and start it too much, you probably flooded it. Mess with the choke, pull a couple times 100% closed, then 50% closed, then open and see if any luck.

And go spend $7 on a set of torx keys for the future.

Also read up on how to take care of those tools. If you put it away for the winter or aren’t going to use it for awhile, empty the gas out of it. The old gas will gum up the carb and degrade the fuel lines.

When you pump the little primer bulb, is it filling up with fuel like normal? Or are you getting a lot of air? Don’t focus on the spark plug alone, I have never had a small 2-stroke engine not start because of a spark plug alone, it’s always the carb and fuel lines from being stored with fuel.

Ryobi suck. Something to keep in mind when buying tools: You can often get a good one second hand, for the price of a brand new piece of shit. As for your problem, save yourself a lot of heart ache and pay 25 bucks to have a garden tool mechanic to service it.

Floods with gas. Do yourself a favor and go watch a vid about carburetors. Also find out how to drain the gas and do an oil change. Understand how it works and maintain it. Small engines are simple. It needs gas/air crank and spark. My money is on shitty gas or dirty carb if it won't start.

Start it on full choke and hold the throttle while pulling the starter, get it warmed up a bit. Then start it on choke again, hold the throttle and then switch to no choke while still holding the throttle. Had mine for two years and beat the shit out of it, these kind of two stokes can be finnicky and you have to learn the timing of it to impel it to go sometimes.

I've noticed a lot in california near the ocean choking the engine is not needed unless its particularly cold.

It's an e-z start engine so dont drop start it.

Flick the choke/starter to start, this locks the throttle at a higher idle good for starting it. You dont need to squeeze the throttle or anything just pull on the starter. If it doesnt start after two or three goes then flick it back to run. The throttle is still high from you flicking it to start so give it a couple more pulls.

Check the fuel lines. They degrade over time and get brittle and crack so it will suck up mostly air. You can prime it and get enough fuel in there to start it but as soon as you hit the throttle it starves and dies.

You can find the lines all over, I think even Walmart sells fuel line kits.

Carb is gummed up fammo.

For some reason that’s the only fucking small engine carb you can’t find on Amazon for $20. They have plenty of other Ryobi replacements, but all I can find is aftermarket gasket and fuel like kits. You can buy a brand new carb for $50 a few places, part number is 308054121.

You can try cleaning it and taking it apart more but I never have luck getting them to run like new after getting clogged with old gas. I just get the new carb.

That's what I suspected, unfortunately. Looks like you can order it from Ryobi for $37.50 but they probably charge another $12.50 for shipping: https://ryobipower.ordertree.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=308054121
I've never cleaned one of these things, but since I'll have to take it apart anyway, I might give that a shot

Well I give up. I opened up the carb - it's clean as a whistle. Confirmed the gas(mix) is good, spark plug works fine, fuel lines are good.
What a fucking piece of shit. I could take it to a ryobi service center but I am skeptical they will fix it and honor the warranty.

The little jets and bullshit will clog despite everything inside the carb looking clean to the naked eye. That happened to me on the leaf blower, the gad made it look shiny but something was clogged. So you can rebuild the thing with all new parts, or order a new carb. I would suggest the fuel lines too while you’re at it.

And you can blame the tool, but none of those small carburetors will hold up to ethanol fuel sitting in there for months.

If it’s still under warranty, bring it in and they will rebuild the whole carb or put a new one on there.

>> No.1631111

This also get all the parts you're not replacing and soak them in carb cleaner in a small closed container over night.

Ethanol gas is really shitty in a lot of different ways. I wish they'd stop subsidizing it.

try holding down the throttle while pulling the string. If you're flooded, it will start after a number of pulls. then let it idle, tap the throttle whenever it feels like it's going to stall. let it run for a minute or two then try full throttle

>> No.1631945

OP I’ve worked on these professionally, if you get that carb cleaned and it still doesn’t fire, it’s likely that the rotor/flywheel/magneto/whatever you wanna call it is defective, in that situation you should take it back to Home Depot and have them send it to Ryobi to get fixed probably under warranty. Then when it’s out of the warranty period in a few years toss it in the dumpster and never buy Ryobi again.

>> No.1632075

>OP I’ve worked on these professionally

>rotor/flywheel/magneto/magneto/whatever you wanna call it is defective

all 3 of these are different things.

a flywheel is there to add weight or for gear reduction

a rotor is a winding around an ironstack or squirrel cage that generates a field when it spins inside of a stator

a magneto spins inside a stator as well but it is like a cup shape and it will have a lobe or some other means of either opening and closing breaker points or signalling a capacitor to discharge at specific times
