then you should be fine and the chances of a bad lathe accident are like one in a million, just don't touch the fucking work when it's spinning.

If you want to avoid most of the danger then get a CNC lathe with a spindle door interlock that makes sure it turns off the spindle when you open the door to fuck with stuff.

I'll give you any rotary tool is dangerous for the same reasons, but a handheld tool obviously as additional risks that a stationary tool like a lathe does not have. dont get me wrong an angle grinder in an unfamiliar worker/hobbyists hands is scary to watch to put it lightly. im just stating my opinion.

a lathe is without a doubt no question more dangerous than an angle grinder. not even in the same ballpark. with a lathe there are a lot more things going on, at higher torques. ive personally seen a parting tool get pulled under and flipped/thrown out and stick right into a bystanders neck about 10 feet away. nobody ever would predict that its not able to be prepared for. with an angle grinder, assuming you know what the fuck youre doing literally every life threatening danger is avoidable

and dont try to say kickbacks are unavoidable because they absolutely are. if your grinder kicks backwards towards you then you fail right off the hop because a properly used grinder only ever pulls itself away from you. theres never a reason to cut or grind with the side of the wheel that pushes the grinder towards you

if youre using a grinder and the sparks are flying away from you, youre doing it wrong. always shoot the sparks towards you, if you cant deal with that then grab a hacksaw

and i did name a tool; the olfa knife. those little bastards are the worst and i avoid them like the plague. in total just a rough estimation i would say ive spent probably about 4 or 5 hours using an olfa knife, but probably over 2000 with an angle grinder. ive had a couple close calls with a grinder, but never anything serious. with an olfa knife i always seem to cut my finger tips off and its nothing serious but it fucking hurts like a bastard for a few days.

inb4 "lol dont cut towards yourself" if youve used an olfa knife youve cut yourself with one lets be real here

>> No.1590134

Obviously you have to cut towards yourself, let's not even acknowledge the mouth breathers that say otherwise. Here is my point though. I'm sure you would agree pretty much every single injury you have ever had with a box cutter has been relatively minor, usually small cuts and the occasional deeper wound that requires attention and possibly even stitches. I agree those are injuries, yet when you talked about the angle grinder in >>1590125 you very specifically excluded injuries that aren't life threatening. Now I'll address the content of that response.

>with a lathe there are a lot more things going on, at higher torques
Sure and as long as you work within the tools specs and follow all safety rules, you are never within the danger zone while the machine is on. I am arguing that an angle grinder is more dangerous than a lathe when operating it precisely within the bounds of the safe operating procedures.

> ive personally seen a parting tool get pulled under and flipped/thrown out and stick right into a bystanders neck about 10 feet away.
Why were guards off of the machine? You wouldn't be using an outdated and unsafe machine? I would never point to electrocution risks with old ungrounded angle grinders as a hazard of using angle grinders.

>and dont try to say kickbacks are unavoidable because they absolutely are.
I didn't, I said even people with decades of experience have accidents. If you really are going to argue "you are always supposed to use the grinder so that it pulls away from you" you can't bitch and moan if a safety sally tells you not to cut towards yourself with a box cutter.

We haven't even gotten into shattered disks, which we both know can rarely happen even with proper inspection before use if a cut off wheel kicks into something too hard while running, the disk is used improperly with side loading, or there are manufacturing defects (which are somewhat common on bottom barrel wheels)

>you very specifically excluded injuries that aren't life threatening

allow me to correct myself. i specified life threatening to level the playing field of angle grinder vs lathe re: safety. 100% of injury is avoidable with an angle grinder. and i say this with confidence backed by my thousands of hours of research on the subject. the people who get majorly injuried with a grinder are not using it properly, end of story. the people who get injured while operating a lathe may be fully competent and versed in their day to day operations and still be in constant danger of the unpredictability expanded on below.

>You wouldn't be using an outdated and unsafe machine?

actually i use outdated unsafe machines quite often but i am able to think for myself and assess the hazards to be encountered and then gauging how far to push the limits before shit gets hairy. also of course there were no guards on it this was an old conventional not a cnc

>I am arguing that an angle grinder is more dangerous than a lathe when operating it precisely within the bounds of the safe operating procedures.

i disagree with this entirely as even if youre following procedure to a T, the general unpredictability of having a rotating mass often hundreds of pounds and spinning at potentially a high rpm trumps that of an angle grinders by a landslide. its no competition. although i do admit my opinion could be biased due to my many hours of grinding accident free.

>"you are always supposed to use the grinder so that it pulls away from you" you can't bitch and moan if a safety sally tells you not to cut towards yourself with a box cutter.

sorry but you took this the wrong way. most of the time i cut myself ive been cutting away from myself. i added this as a disclaimer so i didnt get 4 replies by the inevitible thinks-hes-clever shitposter

You clearly agreed with me he tried to license it to companies before going into business for himself, this is literally how almost all small inventions end up making it to market. The main thing is that you don't really have to be near the big spinny thing. The controls are not near the big spinny thing. There are times where you sand or file on work while it is spinning, but there are techniques to do that safely. There are only a couple of rules that would keep you safe. I've never heard of a lathe accident that happened while these rules were followed (except that time where the spindle on an old lathe actually cracked, letting go the camlock lugs on a chuck while it was spinning. Popped out like a fat bowling ball and thankfully not into anybody). Other than the chuck/work, the other thing to look out for is the feed shafts/lead screw. The "no loose fitting clothes" would save you there too though. And there is no need to hump the machine. Plus, these spin pretty slowly in comparison to the chuck. They spin in relation to how fast your feed is. So the only time they would have a large ratio of speed vs the chuck is during threading, but you don't spin the work that fast for that.

Ages ago I remember seeing footage of a 2-stroke concrete cutter with an abrasive wheel on it someone had fucked with to cut metal girders with. Course being retards they took the guard off presumably to fit the wrong sized wheel under it, there's this skinny cunt with his safety squints on, ramming the motherfucker into a beam like it owes him money.
>disk cuts loose
>literally takes a 1/3rd of his head clean off
>bystanders supervising this fuckery- metal and disk splinters all through them

It was literally like a grenade going off, just these 3 dudes standing around and the operator, bam, all fall down. Most of them not moving very much and one of them who's never moving again.

Course to really fuck shit up, scaffolding is a sure way to get some working at heights hilarity happening because for the most part, its just unqualified dumb cunts throwing it together with spanners that really stop giving a shit after the 5th bolt gets tightened up and the rest... well its just inevitability really.

The $10 Angle Grinder? Safely? You don't. That said, leather jacket, full face shield, safety glasses under the face shield, go slow with your cuts, don't twist in your cut line, USE THE GUARD CORRECTLY, inspect the disk every time you go to turn it on (use thicker disks since this isn't a precision job, they are less likely to break), use the grinder off to the side of your body, DO NOT stand behind it, and respect the fact you have explodium spinning at 11,000 RPM that wants nothing more than to implant itself into your face.

>what does "use the guard correctly" mean
If the wheel explodes or throws things, they will move out from the wheel along something between a radial and a tangent path. Make sure that the guard is between you and those paths.

Besides what the other anon mentioned, I would recommend hearing protection and possibly a dust mask. A kneeling pad or kneepads will let you position yourself comfortably on hard ground, so you can concentrate on the cut rather than a stone poking your kneecap. Make a shallow precise groove along the line, then use that to help guide the disk for the through cut. Binding of the blade is the usual cause of breakage, which can come from crooked cuts and/or the metal pinching it. So set up the cut so that the pole doesn't rest its weight on the disk as you come towards the end of the cut. Position the grinder so that if it binds and kicks, it will try to move in a way that won't put you in danger. The cheapo HF one may not have the power to get away from you, but keep a firm balanced grip. I would advise against cutting with a thick disk (it will take a lot longer with more pressure, and fatigue in an awkward position is a bad thing). Just get a thin disk from a good manufacturer. Be sure to clear the area of flammable stuff, or bring a fire extinguisher along if that's not feasible. The cut edges will be sharp, and the cut pieces will be hot, so leather gloves would be a good idea. They can also reduce felt vibration from the likely-loose tolerances in the grinder.

ideally you shouldn't be putting yourself in a position where the guard is between you and the wheel, but the principle is right.
similar thing with glasses, any kind of safety glasses would be doing pretty good to save your eye from a direct hit of an exploded blade and the rest of your face being unprotected will end very badly, glasses are important to stop little flecks of red hot metal melting and slicing your eyeball open and making you blind.
absolutely no safety GLASSES are going to be rated to a standard for impact protection at the energy for a grinding disk, you need a full face mask to get that kind of protection. i'm nt saying wear a mask i'm saying be aware glasses won't necessarily protect you from a disk so don't put yourself in a position where you rely on them to.

it's important to understand WHY ppe is important rather than just wearing it because you were told to so you can make your own judgements safely.

dude dont bother with all that shit if youre that scared of a grinder buy a hacksaw because chances are youre going to hurt yourself even with literally every piece of ppe on

seriously, the amount of people fearmongering angle grinders on this board im starting to think everyones just trolling me

>full leather apron
>respirator
>knee pads (lol?)
>gloves
>steel toe boots
>coveralls
>face shield
>fire extinguisher
>hearing protection

i am at a loss for words at the level of baby-proofing some individuals need and the inability to judge for themselves what is acceptable and what isnt

ive lectured this before but ill do again because angle grinders are a soft spot and i just took one of those shits that was horribly unsatisfying so im in the perfect mood to rant

anyways ive spent a lot of hours on angle grinder, and by a lot i mean thousands, occasionally a full day if something big needs to be stripped before i fix it (kenworth box truck boxes, huge fuel tanks, etc) the truck boxes i wire wheel to bare steel, the tanks i dont but i still have to strip a motherfuck load of paint sometimes

with that being said, using a 1/4 inch thick grinding wheel to cut something because youre too afraid to use actual zipcuts has gotta be the dumbest fucking thing ive ever heard, and ive heard some fucking dumb things over the years

first off, they make a pipefitters combo wheel which is 3/16" that is meant to be both a grinding wheel and a zipcut. even these are fucking garbage to cut with, but if i had to i would. if i had a choice between cutting with a 1/4" disc or a hacksaw i would use the hacksaw, end of story

heres the thing, few on this board have ran much angle grinder. probably because theyre horrified of them. anyone that has a lot of hours on a grinder will agree with most if not all that im saying.

as for a dust mask, the only time it ever even needs to be considered is when stripping heavy paint or rust or working with galvanized

1/3

>> No.1591802

>>1591801

even in the scenarios mentioned above ive gone without and im am perfectly okay. in my 20 years spent with other welders ive never once seen anothee one use even a dust mask unless he was doing lots of work with galvanized. you will be fine. same goes with hearing protection. seen a few welders wearing earplugs and i wear them only when gouging because thats actually fucking loud and definitely warrants them. never met a welder with hearing loss, and i can hear the same as i always have. even had hearing tests and i was above average

if you want to be the laughing stock of your workplace go ahead and wear kneepads. i bet you'll find the jokes about getting comfortable on your knees as hilarious as they do

safety glasses are a must, the face shield is an annoying piece of unneccessary garbage. use a grinder properly and your face is not at risk

on that note ill explain how i use a grinder. ill preface this by saying i have not and will not ever injure myself with a grinder. i am 110% confident of this.

the most important thing is SHOOT THE SPARKS TOWARDS YOU for the love of god anyone who REES about grinders kicking back is an idiot using the wrong side of the wheel and shooting the sparks away from themselves. rhis makes the grinder kick towards you which is fucking mom tier grinding. sparks flying towards you = grinder can only pull away from you. only ever use a grinder with the sparks coming towards you, no exceptions

2/3

>> No.1591804

>>1591802

the second part of that is dont put your face in there like the pictures of people who have wheels embedded in their skulls. if the wheel explodes (stupidly fucking rare, never even personally seen it happen in thousands of hours on a grinder) its going to follow a straight line path outwards in the same plane its spinning. keep your face the fuck out of this plane. hold the grinder slightly out and with the wheel spinning paralell to your body, not perpendicular until you know what youre doing.

doing so only leaves 2 hands and arms in the danger zone, and renders the faceshield useless

often when im at home ill cut tool steel with a 13 amp dewalt slim high performance no guard no handle, barefoot in shorts and a t-shirt, no gloves, no hearing protection, no dust mask. just safety glasses thats about it. i havent and wont hurt myself because i use the fucking thing properly not like those dumb fucks in the photos. cutting with the wrong side of the wheel with their faces right up close, probably trying to cut a circle out of an anvil with a harbor freight zipcut

and to finish off my rant, if you have a couple close calls and continue to make the same mistakes then hang up the grinder and save yourself some stitches.

tl;dr angle grinder rant you sperge you lose edition

Grinding sparks are hot enough to embed themselves in glass, and voluminous enough to set untreated cotton on fire and burn straight through synthetics. If you're in a position where the sparks are shooting at you for any length of time, heavy leather is the way to go.

And while Milwaukee is full of shit, he's right that cutting with a 1/4" wheel doesn't go very well. If you can't find a 1/8" wheel, just use the thin wheels.

If you're holding an angle grinder and aiming the sparks towards yourself, they're going to hit you. The word you're looking for is "beside". Like in the pic here >>1591276, you aim the sparks beside yourself so that they don't hit you or anything else that would be damaged.

>hes cutting a fucking fence post and youre worried about concrete dust
He didn't post a pic. It may be embedded in a concrete footing, and if he wants to cut it flush with the ground, there will be concrete dust. How much of a concern that would be depends on the unknown specifics of the situation, like how windy that area is.

>your childish concerns on an actual jobsite
I often have to use a grinder while kneeling on concrete or gravel, and a foam mat makes things much nicer than they would otherwise be. Worth it even if just for not having to replace pants every week.

>im willing to bet theres louder things than angle grinders that you dont wear ear plugs for
An angle grinder runs around 110 decibels, If you're exposed to more than half an hour of that per day, OSHA requires hearing protection. I clap my hands occasionally, and that can get to around 130 dB, but that's not continuous, and so does not pose a significant risk of hearing loss. An angle grinder is well above the threshold of continuous noise where I wear hearing protection.

From their site:
>SawStop saws cut most wet wood without a problem. However, if the wood is very green or wet (for example, wet enough to spray a mist when cutting), or if the wood is both wet and pressure treated, then the wood may be sufficiently conductive to trigger the brake. Accordingly, the best practice is to dry wet or green wood before cutting by standing it inside and apart from other wood for about one day. You can also cut wet pressure treated wood and other conductive material by placing the saw in bypass mode to deactivate the safety system.
That's just too rich "you must by our safety saw that the safety can be turned off on"
Also Kick back is the primary danger. The saw stop doesn't really address the primary danger of kick back. It may have a guard and it may even have a riving knife, I am not sure, but the real problem is a traditional saw often makes you stand in the worst possible area depending on what you are doing. Many injuries occur due to the flying workpiece from kick back and many of the injuries due to the blade are a result of kick back.
A sliding table equipped table saw addresses the root of the problem.
I'm really opposed to the idea of a specific patented item being required by regulatory fiat. If the rentseeking faggots at StopSaw are so concerned with woodworkers' welfare, let them surrender their patent rights and compete in an open market.

Depends. The electronic ones in my experience don't work if you have a high amount of white noise. I work in a machine shop so there is constant humming, air escaping, etc. It magnifies all of those sounds as well so you might as well just turn it off and use it as normal earmuffs. The passive earplug ones seem to do ok in this situation. But if you were out in the woods or something shooting, they still suppress the quiet sounds a bit unlike the electronic muffs.

>>1592598
Their rules are not perfect, but they are designed to keep you in good shape when you are old. A lot of the hearing damage for example takes a long time to show up, and unless you get regular tests, they wouldn't necessary be able to tell if damage is happening (so they can look at a long term trend in your hearing) until it is fairly obvious.

I took your advice on the knee pads which was really helpful. It let me be more comfortable and take my time.

I was cutting vertically with the fence post on its side. I had a hard time understanding the best way to hold the grinder so what I did felt really awkward but I kept my body and face out of the direct line / tangent I’d expect shattered disc to spin.

Was definitely surprised about how sparks fly towards you. I thought I was doing something wrong. Was wearing shorts against advice.

It was hard to cut perpendicular to the pipe, keep myself out of the way and also see what the f I was doing. I’ll watch some yt videos.

Overall went really well and just need to trim up some links and the kindergarten will have a working fence gate again!

To the angry dude from Milwaukee - I thought I had your brand of tools but went back out and they were all Hilto brand ( also red which confused me ) because you were so rude I didn’t want to be associate with your products. >I was cutting vertically with the fence post on its side. I had a hard time understanding the best way to hold the grinder so what I did felt really awkward
If your grinder is similar to the one in OP, and you're cutting something on the ground, hold the body of the grinder in your left hand and the handle (positioned on the grinder as in that pic) in your right. You can also grab the gear housing instead of the handle, which gives more control but less stability in the case of a bind. Use the handle until you're familiar with how the grinder behaves. The top of the grinder will be facing you, and sparks will be shooting to your left. Position the guard at an angle similar to the one in the pic, and position yourself so that you can see where the disk meets the metal to be cut. If you have a vise, it's usually better to cut standing up with the work secured in the vise at an easily accessible height. Hold the grinder as described above, but with the handle side facing you and the sparks shooting down in front of you. Position yourself so that you can see along the open side of the guard to where the disk meets the metal to be cut. When cutting a pipe, you can spin it in the vise as needed to maintain this posture, or you can move yourself around the pipe, shifting position to maintain visibility and control as needed.

As for marking pipe for a right angle cut, first mark it at the length you want, then use a sheet of paper, a metal flat tape, or something else flat and flexible but dimensionally stable to wrap around the pipe at the mark and guide a straight line that marks the whole cut (at work I use a product called Wrap-A-Round, at home I use manila folders cut to convenient sizes). I would recommend using a black Sharpie, or something similar. The ink stands up to heat better than most alternatives, so it will be visible closer to the disk as you cut. Though this is less of a concern if you make a shallow guide cut before cutting through.

using the top of the grinder is dicey at best. although its unavoidable in some cases.

a lot of it is the edges of the cut tend to grab the wheel a bit and make it want to walk the grinder in the direction of rotation, following the circle. if this happens when using the top of the wheel it can pull in a kind of circular motion to where if it does kick it will be towards you. a lot less room for error, and it happens quick

using the bottom of the wheel it will only pull to where it will kick away from you before you can get ahold of it

ideally if looking at the grinder top down you want to use the right side of the wheel, not the left

>> No.1593255

>>1593217
>is the problem the kick back - in both these cases wont it just pull it out of my hands in stead of sending it back into me?
Even with a big grinder, the problem is not so much that it pulls out of your hands and takes off as that it suddenly tries to move in some direction with more force than you're braced for and uses your arms as a pivot. Using the top of the wheel in that situation brings a couple factors that increase the risk in the case of a bind. If you're familiar with how a grinder behaves and keep your wits about you, it's not much of a concern, but the risk mitigation techniques may not be intuitive to a novice, which is why I outlined that particular technique. When you're using the wheel so that the sparks shoot directly away from you, it means that the wheel is moving directly away from you at the point of contact. If it binds, that means the grinder will try to move directly towards you. If you don't stop it in time, this can result in the grinder bonking you, after which the still-spinning disk may get caught on clothes and cause further problems. If you're aiming the sparks down, a bind will cause the grinder to try to move up, which should be a relatively safe direction. Also, due to the mechanics of the situation, aiming the sparks down in a vertical cut means that due to the position of your arms, cutting pressure will tend to make the grinder try to climb up out of the material rather than digging deeper, which is enough of a negative feedback that cutting tends to go smoothly without as much active management. If you're shooting the sparks away, the mechanics of the situation make it more likely that a positive feedback situation will develop where excessive pressure causes the disk to bind a bit, which causes the grinder to push against your arms in a way that increases feed pressure, further increasing binding. If not countered, this can quickly cause the disk to lodge in the material and cause the grinder to jump towards you

Mechanic here, independent shop. I use a welder and grinder quite often as I find myself fabricating things quite often from exhaust to a roll bar for a friend.

I agree with most of what you say, I'd point out you left out a quick inspection of the wheel. Mine have broken by being slammed around my toolbox, tiny chips and such.

That said, I've also still used them even though they were chipped in situations where I could stand in very safe places, around a corner for example. I've also never seen one break despite my lack of responsibility in this area, don't be like me I'm stupid with that.

I know a few welders as well, they've never felt a need to step in and tell me I'm being stupid so I'm assuming they're also not nearly as afraid of these tools as everyone on this board seems to be.

Youre rant about knee pads however? Well, the older I get the more I do put a pad down to kneel on. I recommend everyone starts young with that because I wish I did. Not so much a safety issue as it is health however. Knees smacking on concrete 3 hours a day for 30 years isn't good.

I also grind in all directions, shoot me. Kickbacks are controllable imo, long as I expect the possibility which I do. Never even skinned myself as I've seen others do. However, I'll chalk this up under don't be like me, I'm stupid, pretty much your post is all I'd tell me son to do when he's using one though.

First one had a face mill that seems to have friction-welded itself into the spindle after it got spun doing...something. Given the machine only ever seems to cut aluminum and the condition of the inserts, it looks like someone crashed it, hard, into a fixture. Don't know how the fuck you do that with a manual machine, but okay, I guess. The shop I got it from couldn't even press it out, and they're pretty well-equipped. I got it for less than scrap value and decided that I wasn't going to bother fixing it if I could get the new one for $2000 or less (it had quite a bit missing from it, as it turns out). I ended up getting the Atrump for exactly that, so I took the most useful parts out of the old one and scrapped the rest.

>Why would you not go to Home Depot or something and get a couple of 4x6's to stack on top of each other for the central span instead?

Because the thing was originally made to just have the one 8' beam, but that wasn't enough to span the trailer. My screwup was drilling the holes offset on the wrong side of the beam (should be toward the bottom, not the top). Or not using a longer bit of steel. Or not just making the thing from a 4x10/5x10 sheet of ply to begin with, take your pick.

In any event, yeah, no, that whole operation was me just going "this is so stupid, this is so fucking stupid" right up until it was safely on the ground.

>Don't develop Survivor's Bias when it comes to angle grinders.

You're a fucking retard. Angle grinder discs have barely any mass, and the kinetic energy a bit of disc can have when impacting your body isn't huge at all. The worst you'll get is a bruise and a bad scratch on your skin if you aren't wearing sturdy clothes.

If you put your face in the line of a spinning, unguarded disc, then you're a retard. I have no issues using a 5" angle grinder without a guard as long as the disc plane isn't lined up with my face because i know any bit flying away won't be able to hurt any part of my body but my face.

Also angle grinder discs rarely explode. In fact, i've used up hundreds of not thousands of discs in my lifetime and never even SEEN a disc explode. That's how fucking rare of an event it is.

Angle grinder safety tips:

- Cut with the wheel dragging over the work, not pushing, otherwise kickback
- Don't cant the disc while cutting
- Don't put your fucking face in the same plane as the spinning disc, if you absolutely have to, wear a mask/goggles and use a disc guard on the grinder

If it makes you feel good, wear thick gloves and a leather jacket, whatever. It's not like the grinder will care. You can cut thru a thick leather glove in 0.2 seconds.

boo hooo hoo, poor Bosch. Why I bet those poor lil country bumpkins just didn't know what hit em when they tried selling in the big ole city.

They were just simple german folk who barely used any slave labor while producing for Hitler's Germany. They must be so confused with US Patent Laws, I mean just look how confused they were while helping VW devise the software to fool US emissions!

Thanks for sticking up for the little guy

>Patent troll is someone who patents an obvious idea that wouldn't stand in court and doesn't do anything with it other than sue people for it

The sawstop guy has over 100 different patents of vague and obvious table saw safety mechanisms. You know, to patent troll.
Everyone just said fine, fuck you and ignored him.
The only reason he even built sawstop was to push legislation forcing new measures, and to earn royalties on his shitty patents.

I'm an acoustics guy wandering through this thread and I'm just gonna drop this:
Holy SHIT wear as much ear protection as possible, even when what you're doing isn't "loud".

Hearing is absurdly easy to damage. OSHA standards are actually way too lenient.
Power tools will fuck up your hearing in ways that won't show up on hearing tests. Everyone thinks sounds just get quieter with increasing damage, so they say "hey, everything's as loud as it's ever been, I must be fine!"

What actually happens: you lose your ability to pick sounds apart from background noise -- people sitting next to you in a noisy diner become indecipherable even if they yell. A fan going three rooms away sounds close, and your partner whispering naughty shit in your ear sounds far away and impersonal. And the whole time the hearing test says you're fine.

Oh, and NSAIDS give you tinnitus, use them as little as possible and go for other anti-inflammatory methods. My personal favorite is a combo of borage oil and fish oil (equal parts GLA and EPA). Alright, I'm done.

Cheap table saw is probably cheap bearing. My dad had a small table saw That sounded like shit but sang beautifully when I changed the bearing. He buys his shit second hand and it all sounds horrible. Prob. has bad bearings everywhere.

I`ll use ear pro. with my grinder but it's harbor freight trash. Maybe a more expensive new unit you don't need ear pro. Ear pro and prescription glasses is all I use. I would like to use a face shield and do in professional setting but that costs so fuck it..I dunno what the hate for "knee pads" was about. Like if you`re working on a ship and constantly kneeling on some bullshit and want to bring a piece of foam from a couch you found to kneel on to make your life easier I dont see why someone would make it their business to push you over and call you a nancy fag about it.

>> No.1599348

Well, to be fair you can heat cast iron at its joint and then once its heated to a sufficient temperature you can knock it out with a hammer. I've seen plumbers do this beforehand on older builds, not the best way of doing it however it's definitely done.

You're 100% right, anon, broken zip cutter wheels ain't shit. Safety-tards can't into risk assessment. It sure gets hot n sweaty when you're grindin. Just wear a t-shirt, and shorts and mind where your sparks are going. ANSI rated glasses for any stray sparks. Don't even mind the plane of rotation. Better off seeing what you're cuttng well. I don't even pay any mind when cutting 1/2 inch rod. If I twist the grinder when it's deep in metal, only thing you'll lose is a $3 expendable disk.
This image is the result of a cutoff wheel exploding and hitting thin sheet metal. Barely a scratch.

Let's try this another way.

Get zip cut disc, fastest cut, thinnest wheel take wheel in hands snap in half easy

Look grinder number Grinder spin wheel 11,000 circles in minute many fast, car motor vroom vroom go 5000 circles in minute fastest, usually 2000 spinnies in minute, all in big metal box so no can't touchy no hear story people hurt by engine running by itself

use wheel cut metal bar size of pinky or.thumb cutttimg cutting good good cutting twist wheel deep in cut get angry instant BOOM broken wheel remember easy break with hands now wheel move fast many fast spinnies Break easy sharp piece wheel angry at you very bad explode BOOM big piece stick in you face no good be safe thin grind wheel angry

...
Mass x velocity squared
Wheel mass maybe 50 grams ( website dosent say zip cut wheel weight) maybe 10 gram exploded 1/5 of wheel piece hits face
147 grain bullet standard 9mm pistol bullet weigh 9 grams go maybe 1000 feet per second very aerodynamic low drag designed shape to poke holes

Sharp zip cut wheel very thin low drag Pierce skin maybe 2 inches forward facing area fast increase stop wheel faster maybe until hit bone or heavy muscle

No easy Info on speed of broken 10 gram piece of angle grinder zip cut disc math skills not good enough to calculate spinning disc speed radius thickness mass deceleration etc. But wheel spinning 2x than all consumer vehicles engines must be very fast 9 gram wheel think is light but going very fast also very sharp like 9mm pistol bullet in glock very rough estimate still be safe dangerous wheel no want even paper cut on pretty face especially be known as stupid guy get big cut face from grinder

>> No.1599752

>>1599701
It's okay sport. We cant all be thunderfoot.

Here's the numbers youwanted, the momentum of a 9mm bullet would be 3.069kgm/s

The whole disc (26g) (.1143m) at 11,000 rom would be 11.2kgm2/s
So as long as it broke into 4 or more pieces it would have less momentum.

I was just pointing out that your experimental data suggests that flying fragments of disc do not seem to lead in injuries.

It seems to be much more important that you're holding onto a 1.something hp motor and it's going to embed anything it wants to in your flashy bits if you treat it wrong. One of the top stories you linked made it sound like it was the edge of the guard that got rammed into his chin, or the broken disc stuck in the machine hit him with the full force of the motor.

Which is kind of interesting. I bet you could model that load of a breaking disc or kickback, oh but its ac motors so theres no free breaking.

Rigging and heavy iron work, go look at a place that makes mezzanines or fabs up big shit you will see the most dumbfuck moves and near misses its unbelievable.

To all the retards arguing about angle grinders, get some personal responsibility. If you need the government to mandate you to wear PPE to operate the fast spinny thing that cuts stuff, you're a retard. In the same vain if you run the fast spinny cutty thingy in your boxers and sandals you're also a fucking retard.

You don't need the full-body condom, hardhat, astronaut suit and bubble to clean up some saw cuts with an angle grinder, that doesn't make doing it naked alright either. Use your fucking heads.
