I use a Honda push mower. It cuts pretty nicely, I feel. I use a two-stroke Echo trimmer for edging and all that. My yard isn't very big, so my setup is probably a little overkill.

I really care far more about my gardens than my lawn, though.

Meh, it’s stupid, but there’s something special about pulling into your driveway and thinking “Goddamn my lawn looks way better than the neighbor’s”

I was doing pic related on my lawn and it did a good job getting rid of the clovers, but it still left some of the other crap. Got some good pricing on TruGreen once a month and those goys will break out a mixture for exactly what your lawn needs and now the thing is starting to look like a golf course.

But now I have a couple patches around the side of the house where it was almost all weeds and now it’s dirt so I’m trying to get grass to grow. This sandy Florida soil sucks for that. In the midwest you just tossed down some seed and watered it a few times and you would have thick ass lawn there within 3 weeks. But here you have to water like daily and after 2 months it looks like some 50 year old man with thinning hair.

It’s not even worth it to sod. The spots are so small. I just toss a little seed and let my sprinklers do the work and eventually they will fill in either from the seed growing or the surrounding grass starting to creep in.

If it were a huge spot in the middle of the yard, I would think about the sod.

Unfortunately is kikuyu grass and the previous owners let it go so unruly, there was a few inches of thatch. And seriously so spongy in areas that it was a tripping hazard.

Also unfortunately in my hemisphere it's heading into winter so the grass is about to go dormant.

I've de thatched all I can in the last few warm days, re fertilised, but I can only wait and be happy with what I have for another 6 months.

Wish I had some santa ana, but tearing up what I have and relaying/planting will just cost too much and there is no guarantee that I wouldn't get any kikuyu growing back.

over application of pretty much anything can cause damage. grass is a nitrogen heavy crop but of course nitrogen will just fuck right off on you unless it's in the ground. it's best to apply it right before a heavy rain so that as much as possible will seep into the ground. it's also best to apply before it starts growing after winter which stops the phosphorus from "burning" it

>Scott's turf defence/ lawn food fppe crab grass preventer worth it?
without knowing all the ingredients or never having used it i can't say. i do know often those specific lawn care fertilizers are packed full of filler. the filler isn't necessarily a bad thing because people tend to over apply and the filler helps prevent or at least limit that but it also means you're spending a lot more money then just laying down regular fertilizer

>>1588987
all soils are different and most do require fertilizer of some sort to get decent yields on a large scale farm. it's very likely that field is getting nutrients from another source like soil movement, underground water, livestock grazing etc. crop rotation is also extremely important for soil health and with the right rotation can reduce fertilizer needs

knew an old timer who cut his lawn twice a week with one of these... He said it kept him in shape and he likes how much cleaner it was.
The old man lived to like a 100 too.

I doubt it would yield enough to make it worth the effort, but most big box stores carry chipper/mulchers

Lads I had Monster Zero Energy for the first time this week. I haven't had caffeine or soda or anything in over a year, but holy shit is it good. How do I stop the boomer transformation?

>> No.1591400

I've always wanted a """large""" plot of land, something in the 2 to 3 acre range. I want to get into self-sufficiency, and if not, just to put money into property that I'm fairly sure will rise in value over time. That being said I have no clue what kind of mower I'd need for a 2-3 acre plot, my current house has a backyard that I can go over in 15 minutes with a plug-in electric push mower. The online reviews are wall shit and vague, so do any of you have any suggestions? While I don't have the deepest pockets, I'm more than willing to save up for something that'll be good quality that will last and not make tending to a bunch of land an unnecessarily larger effort and amount of time than need be.

For 2-3 acres you'll want a rider. Zero turns are great if you have to mow around a bunch of stuff.
It is entirely possible to use a push mower for that much ground, but I would suggest at least self propelled.

I’m on the fence about clopping pic related this weekend. There’s always coupons for that thing but I think they’re $62.99, that’s a steal at $50. Those Portland tools aren’t all that terrible for occasional use, I grabbed a hedge trimmer and it’s straight for $30 or whatever I paid.

>> No.1591677

>>1591587
Don't they make these as attachments for Echo and other quality trimmers?

>> No.1591686

>>1591677
I think so. But then if you get an “all in one” trimmer, it’s going to be more bulky and awkward than a regular one and it won’t be as good at any single task as the one proper tool. And I have landscapers so I don’t need a full wetback yard care setup, I only do it occasionally when the landscaper is lazy and hungover. Plus the attachment probably costs just as much as this electric one.

>> No.1591688

>>1591686
that's actually false. pole saw and pole saw trimmer attachments are pretty much the same and operate the same. pole saws are actually quite a bit heavier compared to the trimmer attachment. the only real benefit to a pole saw is that the more expensive ones are extendable. that can be a downside too because those things fully extended are a real bitch to control and extremely heavy

I like my old stuff. Originally I thought it would be ideal because everything is so much easier to work on, but with only doing light duty mowing, nothing ever breaks.
It's also nice to know that I picked everything up pretty damn cheap, and if I ever go to sell I'll actually make money instead of taking a loss.

My father in law who had his own auto repair shop for 45 years had a Golden Jubilee that he friggin' BUILT.

4" Manley pistons, worked the fuck out of the head to make it flow, Manley Severe Duty valves, Holley 2 bbl carb, Lunati cam and lifters (I didn't even know Lunati made cams for tractors! But call them up, and they'll make a cam for anything!), and a MSD 5 ignition box. That fucker was STRONG.

Then his idiot worker tried to pull up a huge fresh cut oak stump and wound up trashing the gearbox. He never did get around to fixing it. :(
