You seem to have this kind of stupid idea that a foundation is only required if it is part of the "box" that makes up the house. Like only wooden houses need them or something. Box or not it needs to be firmly attached to the ground. You can't just have it sitting there. It isn't a trailer, it is a permanent structure and those need a foundation. But now you have a problem. For some dumbass reason, you want to live in San Bernadino, which is fucking earthquake central. So, you need a foundation that is built to withstand the big one. If you just want a steel box sitting on the ground then put some wheels on it and be done with it. Problem solved. Or put it someplace that doesn't have huge earthquakes every 30 years, like Modoc.

The dude in the video even said he could have gone with a cheaper foundation if he'd had 18 inches of craw space but he didn't want to do that in case he wanted to add a deck or something. So, he went with a larger foundation so he could make it lower to the ground.

Bigger problem is that it will need a fire sprinkler system which is another $10,000-15,000. Compliance costs for that house will be anywhere from 50,000-60,000 which is not including labor and materials. This is why California is a gigantic scam if you want to build your own house.

Almost like they have a fire problem, huh? Man, what is with the government not wanting your house to burst into flames and set the neighborhood on fire. Oh wait, I forgot. The government was elected by people much smarter than you (IE just about anyone) specifically to combat these problems *Because They Keep Fucking Happening!* The government is off base on a lot of things. Like, why are 40% of the people in prison right now drug offenders? What business do they have telling me what I can do with my body when nasty shit like alcohol and tobacco is legal anyway? But shit like fire sprinklers in Calfornia? That's a fucking no-brainer.

Fuck son, look at those poor fucks in Paradise. I live near there and people have known for decades that it was a fucking firetrap. It is as red as a baboon ass up there though. The place went to Trump by a wide margin. Super conservative. They don't even have a sewer system up there because they are so anti-government regulation. Rather stick their shit in a tank in their back yard than have Uncle Sam get a piece of it. When they passed a few ordinances there about 15 years back requiring fire safety improvements be made to all new homes built people went ape shit about it. Any talk of requiring existing homes be upgraded was shouted down. The road system up there is also a joke. Most roads are narrow two-lane deals with no shoulder, let alone sidewalks. People got trapped and died in their cars because the roads were choked. They refused to spend the money on the infrastructure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xic-OHjsWg

I'm not saying people in Maine need to install fire sprinklers, I'm just saying that, yeah, in California, it's a good fucking idea. I'm not saying people living in Calfornia need full fucking basements but if you live in tornado alley its a good idea, right? Saying it is dumb that they require them in some areas of California just shows how much of an idiot you are.

In my hometown, it is $80,000 for fees - not even permits or insurrection costs - for 2x 300 square foot tiny homes with solar batteries and radiant heating. You could build multiple French-colonial mansions for the total overhead cost.

Meanwhile, the retired white migrants are in the city council and over the radio I hear a new council member say, "hey bob, what about three illegal construction on your property overhanging your neighbor's he's been complaining about it you know" to which he responds "lay off ya Iay off i say lay off ive been here hrmhmh. Lay off okay so as i was saying no new property taxes and we gotta enforce all these building codes here ya see mhm solar panels bad agh OSB good why isn't more people old retired and white like me lay off."

Government should not be in the business of trying to keep people from making bad decisions about their own lives and property and should also not be in the business of rescuing them from the consequences. See the symmetry? Making bad decisions often carries bad consequences - often enough that most people will learn to make better decisions (if they aren't rescued) and those who don't can fuck off.

The problem you have is dumbfucks or greedy shitheads making a bad decision and someone else getting shit on because of it. That is one of the primary reasons governments should exist; to protect people. I shouldn't have my house caved in because Bubba's redneck skyscraper blew down in a stiff breeze. Building codes. I shouldn't get a lung infection because some crazy motherfucker moves in next door and decides that an open cesspit in his front yard is an acceptable way to dispose of their shit and garbage. Health codes. I shouldn't have my well poisoned because some company decides its cheaper to dump used trichloroethylene on the ground in the parking lot then dispose of it properly (this happened in my town. twice). Environmental regulations.

Do you know what caused the fire in Paradise? PG&E. Those greedy motherfuckers put up their powerline towers ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. They knew for years that the towers were falling apart and kept delaying their replacement. Just a few years ago several of them blew down in a storm. They replaced the ones that failed and did 'visual inspections' of the ones remaining. The inspection consisted of a guy eyeballing them from the ground and seeing if anything had fallen off. The fire was caused by a tower being damaged by wind and it dropping a line. The winds weren't even that high at the time (gusts up to 50 mph). They made 1.65 BILLION dollars it NET PROFIT in 2017 and that was after paying millions in fines for the fires they caused between October and December 2017 (5.7 billion gross). They couldn't find the money to replace a series of century-old towers though.

Now, shit can go too far. You have to stay vigilant. One mans 'government doing its job' is another man's 'government overreach'. Finding that balance is difficult and where it needs to be changes with time. I think it should always be somewhere near the middle. I can't think of a time in the modern era where it should be too far towards either extreme.

>> No.1580597

>>1579080
Different guy here, but can't we agree that the hard cutoff for government interference is when it intrudes on something where no one without informed consent is involved? If Bubba's DIY duct tape tower is 50 feet tall, but his land extends several hundred feet in every direction, nobody else's shit gets fucked when it falls, right? It makes sense, to an extent, for the gov't to intervene when something is a thread to the general public (like your old powerline tower example), but I don't know how one could justify preventing someone from taking a risk that they understand and consent to. It's like telling someone they can't get open heart surgery surgery because of how high the mortality rate is.

>> No.1580608

Container flips on side -> hot stove tips over onto shag carpeting -> fire starts -> entire city burns down

Codes are instituted for a reason, if you want stupid shit then look at how the state is forcing all new tract houses to come with PVs (aka future landfill filler) or sprinkler systems (which means $$$$$$ water damage unless drains are installed in every room). There's stupid things there but it's not in regards to structures or load bearing walls.

>> No.1580609
