I personally think he runs a good channel. He fucks shit up often but he doesn't lie about it more times than not. His shop talk seems a bit forced and gets worse when he's got guests but I'll be honest it got me into him, it's just the repeated style gets a little old.

He has started me down the rabbit hole of trying things I'm in no way qualified for by fucking his own shit up and not worrying about it, in a sense showing me it's okay to fail, and it's been pretty successful so far. Not economically speaking in every way but it's fun to try. Some guys like to bang a geeker, head out to the local bar and pick up a skank to bang on the weekends, I like to try and fail at diy. Currently trying out autobody and building a forge on the side to try out blacksmithing. Honestly can point to him as an inspiration to not worry about how much of a waste of money it is.

So far autobody is going okay, dad's done it before so I can have him check my work as I go. When I get into smithing finally I'll have nobody to ask if what I'm doing is correct though so we'll see how that goes.

the problem with qualifications is most of the time its a piece of paper saying some guy who couldn't cut it in the real world showed you how to do something.
you can absolutely teach yourself how to do something and pick up with experience more and better than you will get from some qualification course. depends of course but its wide open.
you have to remember there was a point in time where some guy had to come up with everything by himself that you get taught on a course.
if you are a good problem solver, motivated, good head on your shoulders, practice your quick maths too, you can pretty much do whatever the fuck you want. there is nothing magic about qualifications.

Says the guy without qualifications.
I taught myself a lot of electronics, but even one year in a bachelor taught me more than I knew from 10 years before it. That is because they know EXACTLY what you need, they motivate you to do things (by forcing you) and most importantly, force you to also do the things that are not fun, in my case, higher math. This raises you far and above any hobbyist level very quickly. There's a reason why you dont often see hobbyists doing 'high end' electronics above basic micrcocontrollers.

Yeah, it's always good to at least look at curriculums of what you're interested in, because just doing things your interested in, while it may give you in depth knowledge if you try hard enough, it's often extremely narrow as you're both not exposing yourself and nobody else is pushing exposure onto you, of closely related stuff which are often pretty deeply interconnected.

Like, if you're using an Allen key on a tight bolt, and you've never seen someone slip a bit of pipe over the end to get more leverage, it's probably not going to occur to you to do that because you're unfamiliar with the concept. Same sort of thing with hobbyists.

>He's alright, been kinda boring lately. Not sure what's changed.

He bought the Mazak, restored it and then decided he didn't like how much work it was to use. Then he bought the Haas and is struggling to figure out how to use it effectively. You can clearly tell he has no idea what he's doing with CNC - even as someone who has never even seen a CNC mill in person, I can tell he's struggling. He's used someone else's code for at least one of the things, and his recent vise jaw project is just simple blocks. So the man bought a massively expensive tool he doesn't know how to use and not long after doing so, one of his main income sources - Patreon - decided it was time to alienate a good chunk of their customers and business partners. And then recently unveiled a new business model to make up for the fact that their website is horrendously unprofitable compared to the amount of investor capital they raised. He even put out a patreon defense force video a while ago to beg for people to keep giving him money there and ignore the fact that he's basically dealing with a crummy subcontractor, which isn't going to help him.

He's currently done the biggest fuckup that runs counter to one of his professed values:
Becoming beholden to a tool company (Haas). Albiet not in the way he normally means.

It's the mistake of putting himself in massive debt without having his income diversified enough. The stupid frenchy just needs to make a subscribestar, activate his youtube membership thing, set up a redbubble or something that will let him sell shirts year-round instead of limited-runs, do more streams and he'll be fine.

Else he's just going to get more and more erratic as Patreon gets closer and closer to imploding before he can pay off the mill.

> showed Professor Lewin from MIT wrong?

Lewin wasn't actually wrong about the stuff he was lecturing about which was regurgitation of maxwell's laws—which is what he was good at. But he obviously doesn't understand it in any practical or applied way, nor have any understanding how practicing EEs (or physicists) treat it.

He was wrong in that he invented a strawman argument (and claimed many other textbooks were also wrong) without realizing that nobody in the real world thinks that Kirchhoff's laws hold true when you induce a goddamn current in the wire (in this case, with a magnetic field) from the outside.

Even a kid could grasp that. That is how generators work, after all. Most people are just not nearly as stupid as Lewin was claiming. He was really kind of "out there" in his own reality. Probably made him feel good, but I just cringed watching some of his videos. Oh well.

I'm not going to check that far back and watch a bunch of videos but I feel he's become a parody of himself. First time he cut open a box with that mini chainsaw thing was funny, everytime afterwards, then using the mill to open a box, then just throwing stuff across the bench? Gets tiring, same with the lingo, feels like 75% of the video is broken english and jokes. I hate anyone trying to make jokes on you tube anymore.
Yes, we already know harbor freight doesn't sell the highest quality merchandise and no, making a 10 minute video of acting like a retard, hitting it with a hammer and trying to open drills on a milling machine is not comedy gold. I don't give a fuck about pulling apart every Milwaukee product, actually seriously analyzing the harbor freight drill and light would've actually been something interesting because it's built to a very low price point and seeing how they cut enough corners to reach it is way more interesting then a video of him making food or another shitty video montage with music over it.

Only channel that has jokes I actually like is thisoldtony because it obnoxious and it's unexpected.

If you watch long enough, you pick up on his qualifications. The words he uses and the specific things he knows... and actually the things he doesn't know... lead me to have a pretty good idea of his deal.
He's worked in the mining industry for years, and he's been all around the world. He's almost certainly a higher level mining engineer who became the "fixer" for his company. He talks about things like "cognitive load" and various buzzwords used by problem solving engineers and millwrights. He's likely the guy who goes on site and looks at a broken machine to see the cheapest way to fix it.
I know this because I was a millwight for some years before I was promoted to a sort of similar position, just called a manager, but I am called when there is some problem that the other millwrights can't figure out. So AvE probably have a degree in engineering and lots of years of work experience in (almost certainly) the mining industry.

Thing about degrees is that they get more and more narrow the higher you go until the PhD level where you're dicking around with concepts that literally no one else is.

Even the more general, lower degrees don't provide as general of a knowledge base as one would expect (a guy with a bach in materials engineering will have little overlap with someone with an aerospace one), and then even within degrees, the knowledge of two guys with say a decade of experience and an EE, but one went into power generation and the other into automation will know wildly different things.

vs.

any tool he's ever bought, the patreon paid for, was asked to review:
>"Man this thing is a piece of shit because it doesn't do the exact same thing as my $1500 one that I didn't pay for. It doesn't even survive being intentionally brok- I-I mean used in a completely normal way."
>You know, people who complain about prices of tools being 100 times the cost of manufacture are just people who waste their money on unimportant things or don't actually work"

Attitude while he sits there in his shop surrounded by at least a hundred thousand dollars worth of tools and consumables that were handed to him for nothing more than a review.

Hell even his welding school gave him his training in exchange for advertisement.

It should be noted that the (now deleted) video in question was a response to many patrons who complained when he vetoed a review of a tool they used their reward to vote for because it was "too cheap".

He changed the way he does those reviews and started growing an alex-jones-esque "I'm experienced" beard soon afterwards too.

Close but no.
The guys who refuse to wear earplugs when noise is literally painful or safety glasses/ steel toes because "I seen someone get hurt more 'cause of them bullshit" or "safety is all bullshit" types.

The kind of fuckhead who will go out of his way to do something way more fucked up, dangerous and harder because you pointed out that he could do it with less headache by taking a half second to drill a bigger hole.

The kind of guy who will go buy 50lb double loop type chain to hang a 45 pound load overhead.

The kind of guy who will drill a 1/2" hold and try to fit a 1" lift eye (the kind that goes in steel wire rope to prevent chafing) through it. His solution? Hammer it flat. When you tell him that would make the eye unsafe and to wait a second so you can drill a bigger hole for him he hammers it flat right after you get the hole saw mounted with a smirk.

My favorite example is this:
There was once a plane that had just been introduced, forget the model, but it was brand new.

The schematics clearly showed that a bolt in the tail needed to be installed in an unconventional way.

For some reason, the plane kept failing catastrophically, think the entire tail shearing off type failure.

They traced the failure back to one worker who was doing the opposite, despite the fact that it made the work harder and more out of position.

This puzzled the investigators. When questioned the guy said something to the effect of: "I've been doing this thirty years, I'm not a moron. I told those dumbasses with PhD's that every idiot knows a bolt goes in like this!"

TL;DR the average macho dude who doesn't actually know what he's doing but thinks he does. The "My own way not the proper way" kind of guy.

The "well I've hung a thousand pounds with a rope and 1/2" lag screw in MDF so I can totally hang this 1/4 ton line array by breaking every rule in the rigging handbook since this is a volunteer stage, you're just trying to swing your dick around" type.

Yeah and the foreman is too chickenshit to bust his balls for doing that type of work while I'll get chewed out for far lesser offenses but guess who has to fix that guy's work? Me. It's all so tiresome but I guess it's like this in most trades and I doubt that I could ever work in today's office environment.

A lot of hate comes from former patrons who were big fans until the 12-year olds came in and out-voted those who preferred quality content, causing AvE to completely change his style.

In his BOLTRs he went from actually hypothesizing why design choices were made to breaking it by acting like a hamfist when he opened it, stating "lol shit tool then" and proceeding to take it apart and effectively say "yep, thats a motor and driver" with no other useful information.

Long time Patrons who complained were literally told in the following video to "Go eat your fucking hat you goofs"

If you bought better safety glasses this isn't a fucking problem.

I need glasses so I'm used to it. Never once had an incident where my glasses impeded my workflow. I work in one of the most humid regions of the US too.

The "they get in the way REEEEE" argument is bullshit. If it were true, us four-eyed motherfuckers would have trouble finding jobs.

Spend $20 on a good pair that works for you and you'll have zero issues. The Nemesis series or the 3M glasses with the gasket comes to mind.
I used those before my vision got so bad I couldn't use non-prescription lenses,

Once you use them enough it becomes second nature and they aren't annoying. In fact, when you get used to them, it's uncomfortable to work without them. You'll feel naked.
