Are those any better than the $100 Chinese VFDs?

yes?
the chink ones usually blow their lgbt module
chinks always overrate their power semiconductors (see 50A SSR)

Some guy in my country managed to get ahold of a bunch of old allen bradley servos and started to spray paint and sell them as "generators". I can't find the listing right now

It's pretty much common sense chink power ratings mean "where it doesn't smoke for long enough to make a sale"

I feel like the proper documentation you get with a name brand is worth the extra money.

I have one for my mill, for a 3kw motor I bought a 4.5kw VFD, from what I can tell, it hasn't given me any issues to date, and the functions are pretty good. For the $70ish dollars I paid for it, I'm VERY pleased.

wut?

The actual switching in most VFDs is done with IGBTs, either as discreet components or modules made for exactly this purpose.

Either way, the Chinese ones are usually undersized to save on manufacturing costs. At best, this results in a shortened service life, at worst, they blow up the first time the motor's powered on.

I just realized that "IGBT" can be read as "LGBT" when written in lowercase.

I laughed harder when I should have when I realized what your source of confusion actually was.
