what are some cool diy led party lights projects? i wanted to do a led matrix, connect them to a raspberry pi and program my own light modes. what do i need for this kinda stuff? i just have a rpi, a cheap soldering iron and a starter pi sensor/electronics kit.

an internet connection. why do you expect us to give you a new writeup of the MANY existing guides?

i made the topic and started searching. lot's of them are very basic. would appreciate sharing one of those you talk about

I'll dump some pictures and info on this big LED wall I made for some musicians. I only had two weeks and a $500 budget so I pulled a lot of time and money saving tricks.

The boxes are recycled fluorescent light fixtures like what you see in office tile ceilings. People usually rip those out when they upgrade to LEDs so dumps have mountains of them.

I didn't want to use addressable LED tape because that costs about $8 a foot so I came up with a way to build a matrix out of the much cheaper 12v non addressable stuff. Most people don't realize that and think this project must have cost thousands.

An LED matrix is where you lay out a grid where only one row is on and controlled at a time. Cycle through the rows fast and it's a solid image. I made a matrix but cutting the ground tab on each segment of the 12v tape, laying it down, then soldered in new ground wires running vertically.

These are the control boards I have running up the sides. They're 595 shift registered paired with ULN2803 Darlington chips in order to control the 12v load.

The microcontroller boards. To the left are FETs for controlling the columns. I didn't have time to deal with networking between the panels so I just slapped a microphone on all of them. The lights move in unison as if they were networked because they're all picking up the same sound.

Yup. They're CNCd.

I've been in awe of your stuff shopping kart bro but can I ask if you are on the spectrum or something to be able to manage this? If you are please don't take offence as this is not the intent of my post.

I'm not sure to be honest. Back in the fourth grade my parents were getting divorced and I was crying in school a lot. I was sent to a psychologist who diagnosed me with Asperger's syndrome. I have some of the symptoms like being able to intensely focus on things but I think I'd be a run of the mill smart introvert if it wasn't for unrelated shit in my childhood. As an adult I've met other people with Asperger's syndrome and it's pretty clear there's a world of difference between us.

can a rpi control one of these things? if so how do i do the control stuff? looks great btw, but the music (party) is utter garbage

I like how you cobbled that together with parts that were not at all intended for that specific purpose, like cut led lighting strips.

One christmas I made an indexable light string for the tree, charlieplexed, with an ethernet cable. Each of the dozens of LED "pixels" had 5-bit brightness values (hand-coded PWM) all driven by an atmega8u and some BJTs.
The indexable xmas lights took me at least two solid evenings to build, so it impresses the hell out of me that you got this done in 2 weeks.

There are lots of things you can do with modern LED strips. I'm partial to making signs and infinity mirrors.

Yes you could use an Rpi instead of the homebrew microcontroller boards. The Rpi's GPIO can't switch 12v loads so you will still need a row of power FETs.

Yeah I know. I haven't posted in like months because I have been busy with family stuff and projects. Still they will probably show up and cry.

>it impresses the hell out of me that you got this done in 2 weeks.

It's all about carefully planning things out in a way that can be built quickly. This is another LED wall I built a year earlier. Building this one dragged on for months and months because I didn't put any thought into minimizing the labor involved. I learned from those mistakes.

I'm just impressed you were able to do that on a $500 budget (materials only?)
