Yes, you read that right.
Never mind stupid questions. I've asked plenty, and gotten good advice (and plenty of REALLY shitty advice) here.
But tonight, instead, I've got a really stupid answer to share.
I'm using a lathe to turn down a 9" octagon of 4/4" purple heart into a roughly 1" thick circle.
It's the first stage of a larger project intended as Christmas gifts for my grandkids.
Well, I just can't get this shit to true up.
I've got a 9" wide, 1" thick piece of wood in the lathe between the spur center in the headstock and a live center in the tailstock.
I can pretty quickly make the piece fairly round with a bowl gouge.
And yet,,,
It's not quite circular.
When I gently place a skew chisel against the piece, it chatters as though the piece is oval, NOT round,
OK, I don't have a clue WHY it isn't quite round, but easy fix, all I have to do is true it up, right?
Nope.
Jesus titty-fucking Christ NO!
For some reason (I assume relates to the harmonics of the rotation speed related to the frequency of the inevitably bouncing skew chisel), I just CAN'T true up the piece.
The stupid answer?
SPEED UP THE LATHE.
After moving the belt to a faster position, truing up the piece become a graspable reality.
Oh sure, the piece still isn't perfect, BUT IT WORKS.
If you have some scientific explanation, that's great, but please keep it too yourself.
The point is: sometimes good looks, clean living and being lucky enough to be smarter than most just isn't enough.
You need some stupid, yet mystical answer.
In this case it was "go faster".

Nuf said.
Please share your "stupid answers".

OP here. I wear glasses too, but I don't really need them for close up, I've never found a way to use them in the shop without them being a pain.
Also, using a respirator is great (my snot isn't black anymore), but the part that goes over my nose and mouth seems to direct sawdust straight into my eyes underneath the edges of the goggles.
Still looking for an answer, but I assume a face-shield is the answer.
BTW my wife isn't getting me one for Christmas, the on eI listed on Amazon is out of stock, and she can't be bothered to do a search for something similar. (Yes, the "stupid answer" is "buy yourself whatever you need and don't rely on the mother your children to have your back", but that seems unsatisfying "somehow"),

Not sure I'd recommend either. It's a tough call. More people should be sold ortho-k contact lenses. Wear them at night and take them out in the morning, and you have corrected vision

Not a dynamics expert, but could you be running the lathe near the speed of the 1st bending moment of the part, i.e, resonant frequency? That would cause what you are explaining, and also explain why it gets better when you speed up. Take the part off and measure with calipers to check for roundness. If it is indeed round (not ovaled) then I think you have a dynamic issue you're dealing with

So long story short myself and some work colleagues had our own new years celebration last night, I got into a bit of a state and some of my colleagues thought it would be funny to glue my anus shut with CA glue. I've tried most of the things I can think of that might dissolve glue whilst being gentle to the skin like baking soda, vinegar, warm salt water but I've had no luck and I REALLY don't want to be one of those guys who goes to the emergency room because he got blind drunk and people glued his asshole shut. Does anyone know anything I can get my hands on fairly quickly and easily that would dissolve CA glue specifically whilst not irritating sensitive areas of skin? Serious answers only, please. I'm not panicking yet but as time goes on I imagine I'll reach that point. Feel free to get the jokes and shit out of the way but please help me. I'm not joking (I wish I was).

No.
Acetone is the goto for removing CA glue.
You might try some "Non-Acetone" fingernail polish remover - but I wouldn't bet on it working.

This would be fine if it were on a less sensitive part of my anatomy but I don't think I can try this. I've been sat in a tub of warm soapy water on and off for the last three hours but I don't think it's doing anything.

>> No.1531214

What >>1528711said will more than likely work, depending upon the surface area of contact between your ring piece and the glue. If you have access to a sauna, it would do the job of making you sweat. When spreading your chocolate starfish, only pull as much as you are comfortable with, if it starts to hurt like your first time, stop.
Try nail polish remover on a small test patch of skin less potentially painful than your brown eye, like the inside of your elbow, see how it reacts. If it doesn't cause major problems, apply small amounts to your new hymen, not too much at once, you can add more if it doesn't work but you can't remove it quickly when it dissolves your through sphincter. If it does start to feel too uncomfortable, stop, wash it off with cold water and admit defeat, go to a hospital. People have died from not shitting for an extended period. God speed on your quest to untangle your balloon knot anon, keep us posted.
