Thermostat wiring is 24 volt. Worst you're going to do is murder the 24 volt transformer in the airconditioner.

>> No.1516163

You want to put the wires in as deeply as you can without the insulation going into the hole. I'm not so sure you're doing that with the yellow wire here. Could come loose if something bumps the wall.

While you're at it, check all the wires by giving them each a little tug to make sure they aren't loose.

very messy
especially white would be difficult to get to without disturbing others, should be easier to service than this.
bare copper is showing, shouldn't be, cut the copper down if it won't go in deeper. you shouldn't be able to see any copper, it should be just inside the hole.
bubble is clearly not level, they went to the trouble and you didn't even use it!
screws i assume are countersunk? use pan or cheese head screws, a washer will help stop the unit pulling to one side out of level when you tighten them up too.

Fuck that NEST piece of shit. Junk thermostats made for hipster douchebags. Even worse - they allow Google to actively datamine you with your own wifi.

>> No.1518225

Make sure to turn off breaker to both ac outside and inside air handler or you may fry the transformer.

no but you're going to realize you should have bought an eco bee instead when you don't have heat or ac.

The bubble is completely irrelevant on a unit that is 100% electronic, I guess it's only there so you have an easy way of making sure the unit is amounted vertically for aesthetics (and to add pointless features to justify the absurd price of the unit). Level really only matters for operation on the old style mechanical units that use mercury switches.

That's exactly what that dude is talking about you ninny. His shit is crooked and is going to look like crap.

Y1 is for yellow but b/o is for brown and orange c or common is for blue

>> No.1523211

>>1522046
kys, b/o is for heatpump setup, not wire colouring. In this circumstance, brown is being used for common, blue is being used for heatpump.

Is there a minimal botnet smart thermostat? I generally avoid any IoT consumer garbage but geofencing and being able to manage my heating remotely is appealing.

>> No.1523732

>>1519140
on a tv mount it's a luxury.
on a perfectly round thermostat how the fuck else are you going to do it?
haven't stumbled across many round spirit levels, have you?

someone who wastes money on absurd shit like iphone thermostat is probably going to want it to look level, luckily in the grand scheme of things the cost difference per unit won't even register because of the asking price for these

unless its open source or you write it yourself who knows? nobody that's who.

if it phones home and you log into a website then it's game over. if you can connect to it locally via lan/wifi then firewall it in an isolated subnet and only allow data to/from your remote device via http/https (ideally via your existing phone to home vpn of course).

actually since a thermostat is actually remarkably simple this is a pretty good project if you want to start out with raspi or something similar....
there are probably more open source iot heating controllers for rpi than there are commercial variants.
