So I inherrited a house from my grandfather. The tile floors are from the 50s and falling apart. I want to put in plywood flooring and paint it myself. Sorta like this. The floor underneath is concrete. I realize I gotta put a subfloor. How thin can I make it? Also how thick or thin should I make the floor itself. I live in socal and ive seen it in houses before here and they've never had any problems.

I'm replacing a broken hinge in my laptop. The brass nuts on the screw are what gripped to the plastic of the lid, but they almost all sheared off.
I have hot glue and superglue at my disposal to reattach the brass bits to the plastic, which is better in terms of torsion resistance (so it won't just snap off while I put the screw back in) and ability to bond metal to plastic?

My problem is really how to attach it to anything, it has no axis, no gears or anything. for quadcopter motors you need to rewire them for some extra power, but again just glueing the blades will likely result them being offcenter.

Ex laptop field tech here, that is basically one of the most mechanically stressed components in the entire device, I have seen dozens of broken backshells and attempts to repair them, none held for more than 10 cycles. Plastic cement would be the best option, it melts the facing surfaces and cures them together, but again, it will be a short term fix. Go buy a backshell off ebay for $20 and save yourself the hassle.

12V-3A has lots of mosfets and those coils in there, 5V-0.5A doesn’t. Cable signal booster has all sorts of those little windings too.

How hard is it to change oil in a car?
I've never done it, always paid to have it done. I have a new car and don't want to fuck it up by doing my own oil change, but it doesn't seem that hard to do. My one concern is that I won't tighten the drain plug enough and it'll fall out, all the oil will drain out, and engine will seize.

I want to build table-harness contraption that can support a laptop and some dj hardware. Nothing too serious, at most 15-20 pounds of gear.

Right now I essentially have a solid plank of wood doing the job. It's extremely sturdy but also extremely heavy. Not ideal for wandering convention spaces all day.

What can I do to make a better version of it? I've considered just drilling a bunch of the wood out but that would compromise strength.

I've also considered getting some balsa or plywood and reinforcing it with wood on the bottom.

My biggest limitation is I have a power drill. Nothing more. No saws, no planes, nothing. I can't afford them either.

If I can't improve the design additively, so be it, I'll deal. But if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

very simple job great to start with if you want to keep your car running yourself. if you don't have a lift or pit then get some ramps ideally unless you are confident enough no to get crushed under a car on jack stands. don't just leave it on the jack you need stands. some guys put the wheel under i think thats retarded but to each his own, i'm fat enough it would hit me before the wheel.
do you have a service manual? you should get whatever your equivalent of a haynes manual is, or if you can get a pirate copy of the actual software the dealership uses thats fucking awesome....

to answer your question how tight depends on exactly what car.

dont forget to change the oil filter when you change the oil! when you are done turn the engine on and let it idel a few seconds, watch for the oil light going out as it should and any puddles forming under the car.

real important top tip: when you are refilling and checking the dipstick don't rely on the dipstick level when the car is jacked up at the front!!!

4 band is hard because the precision is often brown, 3 band is easier because its usually gold which is very unusual colour for the first three bands. normally you identify them by looking at the bag they come in when you order them and file them away in the correct place and don't fucking muddle them up. thats how you know.

Depends on the car. Gm uses lead thread plugs and strip out randomly. Worst case scenario you drive to the dealer with the vin number and get a new plug.
Get the car hot before you change the oil and loosen all the sludge. Change the oil over a blanket or water heater box. Replace the filter too. Sometimes that’s the hardest part. I have 4 old trucks and oil change all the time. Don’t worry about overtightening a new plug. 3/8 ratchet is fine. I clean it, drive it around 5 miles and recheck it.

It’s easy, but it’s not really worth the effort if you’re trying to save money. The shops offering $20-$30 oil changes are losing money on them so they can sell you other shit while you’re in there.

You don’t need a torque wrench if you aren’t retarded, but considering you can buy them at Harbor Freight for <$15, it’s not a bad thing to have. And depends on the car. My car is easy as hell since I don’t even need to jack it up to get to the drain plug and filter. When I do my mom’s Jeep, it’s kind of a pain because there are these skid panels under the engine so you need to jack the thing up and get all the way under there to reach the drain plug. And you need to lean into the engine bay to get the filter and then the oil goes down this oil water slide contraption to drain and it always drips off the side somewhere.

Anyway it’s a good place to start working on cars and it feels good to do something yourself and know it was done right. And you can get good synthetic oil for the same price you would pay for basic stuff at the Jiffy Muffler.

Pic related is all you need besides oil+filter if you can get to the stuff without a jack. Newports are critical to the operation so don’t forget to buy a pack from AutoZone.

regular insurance might cover that, since it is surgery. If it is medically necessary. you have a few days to sign up for obamacare. Monday morning bright and early, I'd look at the plans available. Call the companies, and find out if an infected molar qualifies.

If you are literally too poor to afford Obamacare ( and remember there are MASSIVE fucking subsidies for low income, so don't be freaked out by prices ) look up medicaid options.

Last result is go to ER when it gets horrible and you are probably going to die of blood poisoning or something. Run up $20,000 bill you'll never pay, but at least you are a live.

Usually, water flows out but recently no water comes out and sometimes small chunks of nasty cement stuff comes out. Any advice appreciated.

If the studs are 3-1/2" and the insulation is marked R-13 or R-15, you've got all you can get.
Forcing R-19 or R-21 in there won't improve it because part of the R factor is based on density / depth of cavity.

I'm gonna venture a guess. If standing directly on the north pole, east and west are no longer applicable directions and no matter where the wind is coming from (for example from china's direction vs Americas direction) it is always coming from the south... Opposite for the south pole.

Oh for sure. Does the flashlight have a USB port to recharge it? And if you do a “Protected” cell, make sure it will fit in the light because they are normally a tiny bit larger than the unprotected cells. If there is no USB port on the flashlight, I think you may want “Protected” cells assuming they fit. And in that case you would also need to buy a battery charger, or be an idiot like me and charge the battery with a hacked up cell phone charger.

Never owned one of those Zebralights. The one flashlight I own that is made to only use 18650 batteries has a USB charging port and came with a battery installed so all I have to do is plug in the Micro USB cable. And the other lights I have can accept 3x AAAs or 1x 18650, but I have to take the batteries out to recharge them. They’re unprotected which means on those lights I have to make sure I don’t run the batteries too low (this kills Li-Ions) and then I have to check the voltage as I charge them.

You'll need to specify.
Do you want it to show how far the song has progressed (12h=1 song length)
Or do you want it to just move faster when there's more BPM?

I'm a big fan of using arduinos, an Arduino nano will set you back 2$.
You'll need a servo, watchface, Arduino nano.
Then if you want to just more fast when the BPM goes up use a mic and try and filter the BPM.
If you want to represent the song progression use a USB cable (or some other way of interfacing with the Arduino).
Have some code transmit the song length to the Arduino (for example a python script sending an integer via serial connection).
Calculate how fast the servo with the watchface needs to move and use the inbuilt crystal timer functions. They are not perfect but for something like songs they will be almost perfect.

If the bearing spins freely, you're probably not doing anything wrong.

I assume that with 12V pumping through it, I need more than just a quarter-watt resistor from my electronics kit, right? What does he actually need?

it all depends on what the 10 ohm resistor does. it's unlikely that it's shorted across the 12 volt system (which is more like 13-15 when the motor is running).

Gee, generally handles are hand-sized, sp not more than a few inches in length and a few inches in depth. It is for a very specific application, but the general idea is to lift/carry an object that is roughly 30 lbs. I have 300 such objects which need 2 handles per object, so 600 handles total. The handles need to attach to the sides of this rectangular object and cannot protrude to the sides, only vertically up, as in the image. I have designed such a handle, but I would rather find an off-the-shelf item, rather than having a local machine shop make these handles. I've done some screen with frame replacements before, now I wanted to learn how to do it without the frame since in many models it's faster.
What should I use? B7000 glue? 3M tape? Something else? It needs to be
-strong
-possible to remove (if another screen gets destroyed)
-preferably as water resistant as original screen (it wasn't waterproof before, just splash resistant as every screen out there, I'm wandering if 3M tape won't be worse then glue when it comes to this).
I'm asking since my friend went to repair shop, they used the wrong thing and his screen started to detach, so I'm not 100% comfortable to go with B7000 as all those YT pajeets as it seems that repair shops don't know their shit.

It looks like AC input on left side. The coil windings are inductors to filter out high frequencies (noise) and pass through low frequencies (~120v 60Hz AC). Next is the BIG capacitor, probably to ground which serves to filter more high frequencies (noise) out of the AC power signal. Then the clean high voltage AC goes into the big yellow Transformer, and is reduced to a lower AC voltage. The mosfets next to the transformer then take the low voltage AC signal and rectify it into DC. Finally, the smaller capacitors at the end continue to filter out high frequency noise and provide a small storage of DC power effectively smoothing out fluctuations of power from the transformer/rectifier combo.

As to where to touch, depending on voltage, typically your lower voltage DC after the mosfets should hurt the least.

It's ok to use a multimeter to measure amps, but sooner or later you blow the fuse. If you use a series resistor and measure the voltage, there is no fuse involved, you just have to select a low enough resistor so that it does not affect your circuit but has a large enough voltage to read accurately.

think about ohm's law until it is second nature: V = I x R

I bought an LED bulb for my fridge, wanted to eliminate the old incandescent one in there, assumed it heats up the inside and draws more power, wasting even more electricity.

The replacement was a breeze, BUT the LED stays lit even when I close the door, though it does get a lot more dim when I do.

Am I right assuming that the socket is just receiving some bleeding current for whatever reason and probably was doing so before, it just wasn't enough to light up the incandescent bulb visibly (since it needs a lot more to start glowing)?

If so, that would mean the LED isn't wasting "extra" power with the door closed and is still saving power in total, but that raises another stupid question from me. Isn't it dangerous or harmful for the bulb? After all, it's effectively dimming a led light, which all of them, unless you pay a lot extra, say you can't do (not suitable for dimmers and all that).

Those pipes were connected at one time.
It's 1-1/2" pvc drain tubing (assuming it's under the kitchen sink)
The nuts loosen from the T part so the tubing can slide into the fitting.
When they are completely apart as in your pic you'll need to remove the nut where they are separated and slide it onto the tube. When you remove the nut you'll find a compression washer (a beveled plastic ring) under the nut. Place the compression nut on the tubing after placing the nut on the tubing. The beveled edge goes toward the T fitting.
Loosen all the other nuts below that one 1/4 turn so they will allow the assembly to flex. It needs to flex all the way back to the wall. Cradle all of it in your hand while sliding the T back onto the tube that's out. Tighten all the nuts firmly and you should be okay.

Don't forget to check for leaks after you finish.

Check your owner's manual for the oil weight (IE 5W30) your engine needs and google what kind of oil filter you need. Oil is half as expensive on Amazon as AutoZone. Drain old oil out into catch can, torque drain plug to spec (google your car's oil drain torque, and learn to use torque wrench). Take old oil filter out, put new filter in, add new oil. Done.

As others mentioned, it's more cost effective to get the cavemen at the oil change shop to do it for $25, but those assholes always come back and tell you to spend $900 fixing Bullshit A you didn't ask them to fix, or Bullshit B that's "preventative maintenance". Plus, you have the added perk of actually being under you car and looking at things yourself.

I have to repaint a metal front door, it has some pits and scratches here and there, besides cleaning and sanding a bit, is there anything I should do before painting?
Any products I should use to prepare the door for painting?

cleaning and sanding is fine, just don't leave soap residue. If there is any bare metal I'd prime it with oil or alkyd based primer, both of which can be top-coated with latex paint.

and as always, if it's white paint, a shot of black will help it cover, even if the door looks fine already.

Already asked on the "new" thread but didn't get a response so might as well ask here too.
I need a zhu zhu pet's microcontroller for a personal project. I found a zhu zhu pet breakdown article on Nuts & Volts, but it seems to be a different model than mine - there was no speaker, there were buttons on the front and back of the body and the blob of acrylic was much thinner. The article insisted it's an IC under that acrylic but when I melted it down last night I just found a ruined COB.
Is the blob in this picture hiding an IC? Is it even possible to know at a glance?
If he guy was lying and didn't remove the IC himself and all zhu zhus have COBs, is there a way to remove and repurpose them anyway?

Also here's the article in case that's relevant:

what is a COB? I've always read that the black blobs cover ICs but I've never heard of someone digging one out to use on another project, but you might be able to.

I took a little remote controlled car and put it inside a stuffed animal bunny, and ran it around in front of our Lab, who got weird and started circling it to keep us away from it, like she was protecting her young. My mom and sister got pissed because they thought I was teasing the dog. Hell, I thought she'd have sense enough to play with it.

Circuit On Board. I just read about them yesterday, so I'm still really new to the idea but I guess it uses the blob as a lid instead of just as a hiding place, so popping it open kills it.
I ordered some bulk zhu zhus online last night. Mine was a first-gen, maybe the newer ones have a real IC though I'm not sure why they'd make that change since I'm pretty sure COBs are cheaper and safer from removal.

Also dogs are weird. I bet if I put a car in my mean old chihuahua's favorite toy she'd just panic and hide. Ah well.

Disregard this post, I'm stupid.
The COB contains an IC, just not in its usual packaging. If I want to steal a COB, I'll have to cut the whole chunk of chip out and solder tiny wires to the pins sticking out from underneath the thing, which sounds like hell. I'm gonna try anyway because I've got nothing else going on but god damn.
