Mods and Addons

So I got a brand new drill press.
Addons will be a 2cm hardwood board screwed onto the table to protect drills and table and a plastic piping to vacuum off the drilling chips.

How do you mod your machines, or what helpful addons do you build?

Why? There's a hole in the table for just that reason.

I'll bite.
It looks like the big wheel on top is belt-fed mechanical power.
The lever in back looks like it raises and lowers the whole drill, which really can't be right if the top wheel really is the power source.
And what's with the big handle on the side? Is that the power source?
And why DOESN'T the table have a hole in the middle?

To be honest I failed hard, thinking that an image of an obvious old and ancient drill press would never be considered the brand new one I bought. Should have known better since it's 4chan.

ffs, I just picked that one to avoid that the entire threat derails into a discussion about the specific machine I bought.

And yes, while there is a hole already in the table by default, the entire table can be rotated and tilted so there is no guarantee that the hole is always under the drill.

I got tired of awkward C-clamps and made pic related which is a bunch of tapered blocks of wood, two large carriage bolts, and the top boards that clamp the work piece. It can clamp something as thin as sheet metal up to something several inches thick quickly and easily.

i know its diy but with the amount of time you not only spent making that setup, but the time you spend fucking with it every time you use the drill, you could easily afford a nice vise and get on with your life.

Explain how a drill vise can hold something thin, like 1/8 thick.

Explain how a drill vise is quicker or more versatile, when the slots have to line up with the slots in the base plate, which quite often does not allow you to move the piece to the proper location you want to drill. My system never runs out of adjustment.

that $200 vise still cannot clamp things like thin metal, say 1/8 thick. and while it's really nice in many cases, it's too tall for a table top drill press, while the home made system works fine on almost any drill press, and is more rigid than that vise.

yea, for a bench drill press i can see that being an issue. not gonna recommend a floor standing drill. i would like one too but being a renter and not an owner i dont think its a good idea.

derp, maybe you meant slots placed farther apart rather than bigger in size. in that case you would need a thin piece of wood or metal as an intermediary with the mounting patterns of both the drill and the vise.

>> No.1509116

>>1509108
>can you show me your problem with the 1/8" metal please?

When I'm drilling through metal, it helps to have a block of wood behind it, and a clamp system that uses downward force rather than side force is 100x simpler to set up, especially if the piece of metal does not have parallel sides. Try clamping a triangular piece of anything in that vise; you can't.

I think I'm done with this debate, because either I'm not making my points well, or I'm wrong.

>Try clamping a triangular piece of anything in that vise; you can't.
Triangles can't spin between two parallel jaws. It's a fully-determined system even if one side has a small contact area. When I drill metal with a press, I typically put a thin piece of wood a little narrower than the piece of metal into the vise below the metal. And if the hole is small, I just brace the vise against the column rather than bolting it to the table.

>> No.1509699 [DELETED]

>>1509697

that's a cool setup, but would not work well with sheet metal. Why can't anyone admit that clamping thin metal with downward force is 100x better than squeezing from the edges?

Jesus christ just use one bolt/nut to secure it. As long as the workpiece is vaguely under the drill when you start it is impossible to fuck up

>secure workpiece in vice level against parallels
>slide and rotate vice with nut loose on bolt
>get it so that the drill lands exactly with the punch

IMMEDIATELY grades dropped, attendance dropped, and kids went from barely tolerating school to flat out dropping out.

To this daybi dont fucking use math over 8th grade level. Or reading. Little to no history. But you know what i do use? Sketches to help interpret ideas with bros. Welding anytime i need it for work or fun. Same with woodworking. I couldnt afford a nice makeup table for the old lady but i already had a gun and a box of nailes. ???? ??? ?

this isn't some machinist's secret handshake: it is basic day 1 stuff

for 3mm(close enough the the 1/8 of an inch plate the poster I (you)ed mentioned) then literally just:

>place a few THICC machinist's parallels like pic related on their side to provide support
>place plate on parallels and tighten vice while pressing workpiece against parallels
>if any of the parallels are loose tap the top face of the plate with a rubber mallet until they are all stuck in place(meaning the piece is resting flat on the parallels)
>screw down vice and drill your little heart out

the same goes for thinner plate just use more support(but obviously make sure there is nothing under the through hole you are drilling)

Alright children, amateur hour was a while ago.
You get one of the clamp champs and attach it to a sacrificial board that you can slide on the drill press table.

>> No.1510708

>>1509097
Those are literally just wooden toe clamps. And toe clamps are superior for clamping thin sheet metal compared to a vise because it pins it to the table, wheras a vise will bend the work and lose clamping force/distort the work. Toe clamps are also extremely good for a huge variety of other situations, like parts with no parallel sides. Not saying a vise is bad, but to deny that toe clamps have a place is silly.
