I figured that having a thread dedicated to trivial questions about purchasing tools, hobby equipment etc would keep the board clear and be more helpful to have everything all in one place.

I'm looking for a hobby magnifying glass for a bench. I don't know what to look for desu.

Questions include type of bulb & brightness, extension arm style, optimal magnification, clamp or stand, features to look for and good brands.

Thanks, sorry it's so long.

I've used it to cover stuff while I did various things but I never painted with it. I think thickness will determine a lot. What exactly are you doing?

I got pic related for $6. Now that’s a stocking stuffer!

If you need to get your boomer stepdad something for Xmas, subscribe to the Sears reward program and keep an eye on sales. Boomers still love Craftsman. Thing was on sale for $25 off of $40, plus they gave me some “FREECASH” which was $20 off if I spend $20.

That little speed handle was actually on a video from that Real Tool Reviews guy saying it was actually a good holiday buy and not a meme.

Not bad. Can't say I've ever seen this before. Good to know it's not a meme at least.
I've got some craftsman stuff. It depends on what you get whether it's good or not. Some of their stuff is garbage now.

It’s basically like a speed handle (pic related), but faster and easier to use and had a breaker bar function.

And I’m mostly saying Craftsman didn’t go from great to shit within a year of moving to Asia. Most of their stuff is made by some other manufacturers anyway and you can find the same thing with other brands on it. The speed handle deal is also sold at Lowe’s with a Kobalt stamp and a lot of Craftsman’s ratchets (before SB&D) were definitely made by Apex, or at least they’re the same design and mechanism as Gearwrench and Husky ratchets. Been looking at their tap & die sets and it’s the same thing as the GW and a few other brands.

But it’s like any other brand... their cheapest screwdrivers are going to be mediocre, but IMO most of the stuff is pretty good for Asian made tools.

What I want to know is what Lowes is getting out of carrying Craftsman tools alongside their Kobalt line. I would think it cannibalizes their brand sales.

There also is something called "snap circuits"
This is probably more what you're looking for: https://www.elenco.com/brand/snap-circuits/

Craftsman is definitely a more well known brand than Kobalt. Boomers and normies love their tool boxes and wrench sets, which were the first things that Lowe’s started to sell in their stores.

Plus I think Craftsman was like the one profitable thing left from Sears. And Ace Hardware still sells almost all Craftsman. I don’t know what Lowe’s/SB&D paid for the brand, but they had to get it at a pretty good price. The ship was sinking anyway so might as well try and salvage the few working parts for cheap before it is at the bottom of the ocean.

Sears' lifeboat is craftsman. If they were smart they'd jettison everything else.
Amazing to think that Sears was the Amazon of its day. Instead of the internet it was the catalog and you had to wait a little longer but it still was delivered to your house.
