That's like asking all car manufacturers to use the same engine. It won't happen.

The reason each brand uses it's own proprietary battery is to increase the likelihood of the consumer buying their tools than another manufacturer's if they already have a tool that uses their battery.

This is the answer. They'll practically GIVE you the tool, anyway. They want you to buy MOAR BATTEREEEEEEEEES. By the time whatever hot-shit cordless tool you buy hits the shelves, the production run is probably over, and DeWank is already spewing its replacement. They don't care. They want to sell you expensive-as-fuck batteries as long as they can. Then, just when you think you've got enough batteris to get you through a work day without waiting on the fucking things to charge, they change the battery technology, and all new tools only take the new battery. Now, your 1.21 Gigabucks of "legacy" batteries are shit, and you bend over for the lithium enema again.

Similar to cell phones. The carrier will GIVE you the phone. It's the monthly fix they're jonesin' for.

This is why sometimes I almost debate Kobalt or a better HF brand with batteries <$50. Rigid’s batteries are pretty reasonable too.

I have some Menard’s brand drill set I got from my dad and only one 1.5Ah battery for two tools, but I can’t bring myself to pay $80 for a single 2.0Ah battery. I will probably end up waiting for a sale and buy their cheapest drill kit with two batteries and either toss the drill in the trash or rip it apart for hardware and bits to play with.

this isnt the case anymore, the major power tool companies stopped doing this about a decade ago and have no plans to change their battery platforms anytime soon, hell Ryobi has been using the same ONE+ batteries since 1996.

the previous thinking was that when new technology came out you would buy new tools and have to buy into a new battery platform to replace your old stuff. however tool companies found that every time they change platforms they are opening up customers to cross-shopping with other brands and they might loose a sale and potential long-term customer. its better to keep the same platform for as long as possible and keep people wrapped into the same tools and batteries.

its actually a pretty clever move of these German company's because they dont have to invest money in battery production and can rely on the metabo battery.
also they get new customers that already use metabo and are happy that they can use their old battery's for their hydraulic crimper.

so rothenberger which makes Plumbing equipment since a long time buys the metabo drill without gearbox and puts their drain snake onto it.
and Steinel wich makes hot snot guns and heat guns can use metabos battery without having the development costs.

The new batteries don’t really last much longer running the tools than the old XRP (unless you get 5.0Ah+), but it has all the other advantages. They will last more charge cycles, charge faster, and my favorite thing about Li-Ion as a weekend warrior is I can grab a battery that was sitting for 2 months and it will still have 80% charge. It sucks having to wait an hour for the old Ni-Cd batteries to charge when I’m just tryin to put in a couple drywall anchors to hang a new TV or bullshit decor.
