I temporarily lost my 20cm ruler so I bought a new one. Found the old one. Same cheap brand (they've enlarged the font size of their logo slightly). The old one has shrunk by nearly 2mm compared to the new one (and another ruler I measured it against).

Not impressed.
Don't buy cheap rulers guys.

What about Dollar store steel rulers? Accurate enough and they don't buff out the edges. They're knife-edge sharp.

>> No.1478133

Literally sharp enough to slice stuff open. I decided to try using it as a kitchen knife to prepare chicken and was just dumbfounded when it actually worked.

>less than 1% error
>error is comparable to plastic's shrinkage after molding
>not meant to be a precision instrument to begin with

I'd say you got what you paid for.
Reminds me of an old adage: a man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure.

Rather, don't buy plastic measuring tools. Plastic is far more prone to various kinds of distortion than structural metals are. A cheap steel ruler is accurate enough for eyeballing things, and will hold that accuracy so long as you don't abuse it too badly.

>mfw I bought a piece of trimming at a hardware store and taped on a printed out ruler and it's more accurate than your ruler
I just compared it to my steel ruler, and at 50cm I'm off by 0.5mm, so 1%. That's not too bad.

You think that is bad? Cheap candy thermometers are the worst things ever for being consistent.

This. When I use a measuring device for a project, I never use another one until it is done.
