Anyone have any experience with electric lawn mowers? How well do they work? Is it just a good idea conceptually, or are they actually useful for general purposes, instead of specific circumstances?

I like them. I've used them for years. 17 years to be exact. I'm on my third one. I don't have a huge lawn, only about 3500 square feet. Works great for me. Pros: quieter, no smelly fumes, no gas to keep around. Cons: sometimes a little underpowered, if not cordless the cord can be challenging.

>> No.1461350

Actually I've only ever used one mower, and I've had it for almost 20 years. It has a cord
Pros:
>Never once has failed to run
>Literally no maintenance required on the motor or rotor blade
>Much quieter
>potentially cheaper to run
>Easier for children to use

Cons:
>Might be a bit underpowered for me, although I live in an area with very thick grass and I suspect it would be quite adequate for more normal lawns
>Several extension cords are needed to cover an ample lawn
>Sometimes it trips the breaker
>Unsafe to use in rain

They work fine for small lawns, for anything else the cord becomes annoying to manage or the battery runs out.

I’ve got an electric mower as well as a bunch of electric power tools. With two sets of batteriesthat are interchangeable between tools, I can easily get my whole lawn.
Only issue is the power. It’ll crap out if the grass is too tall/thick, but I got the smaller model so it could also be the blade.
Overall, real nice and incredibly conventient for all tools to run on the same batteries that charge in a few hours.

Corded are a pain in the ass. Battery powered are decent but of course only run so long. Both are limited to small lawns due to battery or cable length

If you're going to get a corded moded get a nice and thick quality ~12 gauge extension cord with it. People daisy chain 3 18 gauge extension cords and wonder why they trip breakers and burn up brushes. The same goes for big power tools.

i have an ego elec lawn mower I use around my house
>works really great for normal grass (5k sq ft with 5ah batt IIRC)
>get a self-propelled version (w/ drive wheels)

>> No.1465473

I've been using an EGO mower for about 5 years now. Takes about 1.5 hrs. to mow my lawn, and I've got a couple rentals that I take care of occasionally.

It's quiet and there's almost zero maintenance. Super lightweight. I've got 2 5Ah batteries that let me get most jobs done without any break.

Problem has been with the batteries. 3 have failed outright. EGO replaced 2 without much more than a phone call (they were within the 3 year warranty, and bought from Lowe's) but the 4th died just into year 4, and they're $200+ to replace.

I'll pay the premium because I like the quiet and can afford it, but for joe homeowner, I don't think the battery tech is quite there yet.

>> No.1465475

I have an earthwise mower for my >1000sqft lawn. 0 maintenance, plug and play. The cord is a pain to deal with and power is lacking having used commercial mowers.

I also have a ryobi straight shaft cordless string trimmer. I love it aside from the POS head on it.

its more cost effective to go out and buy another tool kit like a blower or chainsaw than buy another battery on its own. thats how they get you, the batteries are expensive to produce but they jack up the prices so you go out and buy another tool and expand your investment into their line rather than just have one tool with a couple batteries.

Corded are good for one reason, the super light weight. Think vacuum cleaner sweeps rather than pushing a mower - lots of sweeps, lets you remove the patterning and go over bumpy and finicky areas repeatedly getting an even cut.

If your grass is even a little bit heavy watch out. Also Americans watch out 120V means half power what rest of world gets. People say use whippersnippers and brushcutters with attachments - but even a small grassed area is better done with a mower.

>> No.1469504

John Deer is now becoming one of those that hate people doing repairs, if that article I read is to be believed

>> No.1470544

>>1470514
Doesn’t apply to mowers. The issue is with tractors and access to software. JD has been making it so even basic repairs require at least resetting the computer(like clearing a check engine code in cars) but only JD dealers have the ability to do that so you end up waiting hours or sometimes days for a tech to show up plus a couple hundred bucks or more for the service call. Some dealers really overcharge and some even have special rates for “peak seasons” which is spring and fall so basically any time the tractors are actually being used
