I have a sheet that's stuck at the top of the mast of my sailboat. So I need to build a hook to grab it and pull it down (there is a shackle to grab it).

I'm thinking of using rigid wire. Which material and section is good if I want to reach about 8 meters without having the thing bend and be completely useless?

I'm thinking copper wire but I'm not sure about the cross section.

Just buy a really cheap extendable window pole you mongo

Copper & Aluminium are pretty gay. I'd use 6 to 12mm or 1/4 to1/2" rebar or similar. Maybe even ordinary steel stock but it will be marginally easier to duct tape 2 bits of rebar together to make 8m.

You're going to struggle hook-a-ducking 8 metres in the air though, maybe a bit of string on a suitable length of wood would be more appropriate.

That's not a bad idea. I could go wood + a bit of wire to form a hook.

yeah, an 8 meter long 1/2" piece of rebar would work nicely on his SAILBOAT.

How does one transport 8m lengths of rebar?
How much FUCK YOU does the fast sheet have?
8m of anything is horrifically wobbly once you have it in the air. I suggested rebar purely because it has a grippy texture that facilitates taping several pieces together that will fit in your car.

Another idea Captain, mug a camping fag & steal his carbon tent poles. Then affix your hook/sheet arrangement to that. Yer average dome tent pole is 4/5 metres? I still think excessive application of duct tape will be essential.

just buy like 3 then my dude

Fractional or masthead rig?

Sheets attach to the clew of a sail. They don't go to the mast. Those are called halyards. If you ran a halyard up with no sail attached the easiest way to get it down is harnessing up and have a friend winch you to the top of the mast on a spare/jib/main halyard.

Fractional, but that's not really relevant.
>>1412797
It's a small boat with no winch, and the alu mast would not hold someone's weight.
It's the mainsail halyard indeed.

Other solutions: train a bird, fly a small kite, throw a monkey fist with a hook (might actually work). Magnet won't work because the shackle is 316 stainless and I think that's not magnetic.

I think I'll just end up duct-taping whatever shit I can find.

Thanks for everyone with suggestions.
If the thread is still there when I get to it I will update with results.

Move the boat near the tallest thing you can find and get on top of. 3.5 meter pole + 2 meter person plus stand ontop of something 2.5meters tall = success.

Just tape a metal hook to a metal pole. Tie rope on hook. Rip pole off. Jerk on rope like you normally would

How small? It's not a fucking laser sailboat, is it? just tip the goddamn boat over. Or lift the mast out.

is it a hobie cat or it has a removable mast? then take the mast off and fix on the ground.

Is it anything with a fixed mast? then it'll bear your weight so climb up.
plus, why do you have a sheet trapped at the top only halyards run up the mast. WTF were you doing

Copper is dense and weak. A "wire" 8m long that is thick enough to not flop around uselessly would be sold as "bar stock" rather than wire. An aluminum tube would work, as would a piece of lumber. But the boat anons seem to have other suggestions.

Use some PVC pipe? You should really just be able to bring the mast down though.

>8 meters

good luck finding anything rigid enough at that length while still being light enough to use.

aluminium would be the ideal choice but good luck finding a piece of it long enough or a way to fasten multiple pieces together with enough strength. best bet would be some alumimium unistrut/channel and bolt it together
