Why not just have a "chuck key" switch on the control panel that disables the controls if the chuck key isn't inserted into it?

Basically in order for the machine to operate, the chuck key must be inserted into the control panel. If you remove the chuck key to make adjustments to the head, then it disables the machine.

There's so many things wrong with the stuff going on in that video it is astonishing. It is even more astonishing how many people get sucked in and chewed up in big ass machinery. You should see the lengths I go to for safety before even using my Dremel to do something that takes 30 seconds or less. For large machinery I think you need a spotter. Someone who just sits there and watches to make sure you don't do something stupid or to tell you your work boots have come untied. I mean damn, if I had looked over and say my coworker about to use a machine like that lathe while wearing those type of clothing I'd have pitched a fucking fit.

>Watch and snicker from the grinder

Part of workplace safety is watching out for your fellows. You are as big a part to blame for that as he is. If they disagree with you just say something like, "Dude, I just don't want to see you get hurt," and detail what it is they are doing incorrectly. If they still don't listen, get a manager/work boss/teacher in on the conversation. If everyone is against you even then you can either take matters into you own hands to do the job yourself or quit. Because everyone in the chain of command is incompetent and you don't want to be working for them because there's more than likely a whole slew of safety violations going on in a dozen other places that put you directly at risk that you don't even have the training to spot. At the very least video yourself telling them why they shouldn't do it and them doing it. If something goes wrong, you'll have it on video that you tried to stop it.

Older ones didn't have it. Used new ones often don't have it because someone will either accidentally damage it or purposely cut it off because it's annoying (which, true, it is).

On many lathes, there are two clutch levers. One on the carriage and one at the headstock. And also on (typically smaller lathes) there is no clutch, and just a switch that turns on the motor. The switch is almost always located on the headstock (eg, Monarch EE's, most smaller import lathes, Hardinge-type toolroom lathes).

So what. They do it 3 times and get fired. Easy as that. In some german companies you can get fired for not using the handrails on stairs. Seems stupid but it's one of the main causes of fatal accidents.

Chuck keys are especially bad because it often doesn't hurt the operator but other completely unaware people somewhere across the room.

You underestimate how capitalism works anon. They'd prolly add RFID to the key so it only works with the machine it's sold with. Of course (for a nominal fee) we can code you up a new chuck key! BECAUSE FUCK YOU, DRM FOR EVERYONE.

any shop i've ever been in you get caught once is enough, you have to be into some real kinky shit to get caught twice.
nearby field? key is thrown, don't come back until its found.
bored electrician? next day you come in and the machine you are using trips every time it turns off, needs key to restart.
arts and crafts enthusiasts abound? huge fake key on a chain to wear round your neck for a week
work with assholes? hair shaved off.
where do you guys work that people don't have a sense of humor?
never seen anyone leave a key in twice.
sometimes i think people aren't really bothered about the safety aspect as much as the fuckery...

Certainly not a bad solution but here you're employer has to give you a few prior warnings (depending on the fuck up) before firing. In some cases you can get fired directly not sure if that's the case with leaving the chuck key. My bet would be stuff like you mentioned is going on here as well but i don't really know as i i'm not working as a professional machinist.

Spring loaded chuck keys were the solution a hundred years ago. They push themselves out of the chuck unless you hold them down. They are annoying to use for obvious reasons and are usually seen in classrooms.

I did this once, luckily it rotated outward of the lathe. the thing bounced off the floor with such force that it hit the ceiling, my hand was on it too so my arm was flung downwards with considerable force, but I was unharmed.
