Ported or sealed speakers? There doesn't seem to be any benefit to ported on paper but most people suggest them

The port lowers the frequency of the cab so you can get away with a smaller box. If you have room for big boxes sealed is arguably better since you do not have any phase issues induced by the sound coming out of the port, but the box and the driver get big if you want good low end. Most people do not have rooms suitable enough to hear the actual difference and any phase issues caused by the port is drowned out by phase issues caused by the room.

These days the trend is to use a small ported box and brute force of large excursion speakers and for most people this is the way to go.

Wrong. Ported boxes take up more space than sealed boxes. When measuring internal volume you have to subtract the port size. Ported boxes will peak about 10hz above whatever the port is tuned to, and frequency response rolls off quick below port freq. Sealed boxes roll off more gradually. Ported boxes will be louder at most frequencies but not go as low and sound as clean as sealed boxes. IMO nothing sounds as clean as a good sub with good power in a slightly oversized sealed box.

Avantone Mix Cubes. Best audio I have ever heard.

I wouldn't go ported for the single reason that mice can nest in there.
