It used to be normal to have a coffin made while alive, and store apples in it over winter in the attic.

why make? people just bury them all over the place when they are done using them to show the body. Regular dumps don't take em, so they are disposed of/buried in certain areas and labeled with a date on a marker above. If the land is repurposed, they need to know if it's had time to biodegrade or needs to be moved. Otherwise it'd end up as an EPA superfund site without the markers, since old medical waste is often disposed of inside. They're buoyant so they have to be buried well below the freeze line like why fuel tanks and pools have to be either above ground or X deep. Usually it's about 6 foot. Some clorox and a good pressure wash inside and out and they are ready for reuse.

Because autumn apples were the fruit that would keep over winter.

Pears, berries and so on could only be preserved as jam.

That used to be a very normal thing to do, it's only now that we've sanitized death and parting with a loved one - but it's not like the fact of the matter has gone anywhere.
