I have 3 acres of land and in a secluded part of it I plan to build a small shed / cottage for visiting writers & scholars.

How do I begin to learn how to do this?

A modified Tuff Shed would probably work but I think it would be cheapest to build it ourselves.

google search: house construction book
There are dozens of books out there, so do some legwork and research the books with good reviews on amazon.
A comprehensive book should describe site layout, foundation or pilings, plumbing, wastewater, electrical, framing, heating/cooling/ventilation, insulation, roofing, siding, and finishing.
Your region may have building code books, those are useful guides for not fucking up basic things.
Learn all these subjects and you'll have a good start.

Look up plans for a shed. It's the simplest structure that you could turn into a tiny house.

Just buy a shed kit off of amazon and go to the lumber yard and buy the supplies and start building.

If you're building a shed, just go the extra step stool mount it on a trailer frame. Call it a tiny home and see it for $30,000

Building sheds don't require alot of skill, but they do require alot of forethought and planning with a good helping of patience and motivation.
Depending on what you need the shed for, and the area you're putting it in you may want to design it yourself, that way you'll know exactly how to put it together and will get the most out of the materials you have.
If you are buying wood and screws make sure you get it from a timber merchant and not your local diy store, it will be literally half the price if not more. (keep in mind the price they give you will be VAT excluded)

So make sure you completely plan how it will go, otherwise you'll end up getting half way there then realising a piece of wood is too thick and your screws don't go all the way through.

Good luck!
Post some pictures after it's done.
