I have some flooring guys coming to repair/replace and refinish my original hardwood flooring from 1940s. I'm trying to get all the prep work done but one problem I've ran into is some large nails hammered flush into a few spots. The heads are too big to sink them in more. I have a basement and they're visible from down there but a buddy and I hammered at them from below to no avail, they won't budge at all.

So here's what I think my options are (keeping in mind I want to keep damage to a minimum) :

>1. Drill out nail heads and use a punch to sink shafts down
I'm not entirely sure if this would work but seems like the best option to try first. I also have a dremel that might work for cutting the heads off.

>2. Chisel out a small area around the nail then use a cats paw to pry them up

>3. Leave them for flooring guys to deal with (if they don't want to run into them and fuck up their sander)

Any advice or other ideas on how I should go about this?

use a punch with a flat or divoted end and a hammer until someone up top can slide a claw under the head

I've been successful pulling these out with a magnet.

Can't you put water on it to soften the wood or something doesn't it make it looser ?

>> No.1314524

fuck it up.. fill it up with sawdust and wood glue mix.

OP here. If anyone wants to know, I solved this problem by drilling out the nail heads with a 1/8 inch bit then used a punch to set the nails deeper. Worked great.

try this, it works 99% of the time
use a scrap block of wood and hammer it around the nail till the nail head lifts enough, then use the pry bar to lift the nail out, keep a scrap block under the pry bar so you don't damage the floor.
cheers!

Sanding over nails will fuck up the sander and use way more paper.

Floor guys got started today. Pic related is where some new wood was laced in with 75 year old wood, can you guess which is which? Its not a great match but a darker stain should hide it decently.

it is likely that it us the same "type" of wood but new woods will never really match because it is grown faster.

Its all red oak but the newer stuff is probably a lower grade. I don't care as long as it looks good enough. These guys are doing it for an unbelievably low price.
