Grounding adds an extra layer of safety.
If some wire comes loose, or something overheats and melts through insulation, and touches the grounded metal case, it should blow the equipment fuse or trip the breaker instead of zapping the user.
The extra safety is good because shit breaks and people do stupid things.
Same shit for polarized AC plugs. Might seem unnecessary but it's for safety reasons. If an equipment fuse blows because a hot wire touched the chassis, and the plug was unpolarized, there'd be a 50% chance the chassis is still hot and dangerous.

Years ago my dad used to work on trucks (mostly International and Mack) so we'd have a couple parked around the place that needed servicing.
Big old diesel engine blocks stay warm for a long time, so on cold winter nights stray kitties would like to sleep around/in them. More than a few got gibbed by fast moving accessory belts and one managed to end up in a turbo after the whole induction side was taken off to be cleaned out.
Funnily enough the turbo was this fucking monster, steel bladed one and didn't even get damaged or it just hadn't the time to spool up to full tilt, same can't be said for the cat as it was an ungodly amount of work to get all the finely ground bits out

There is no reason to be in that position, especially when you are working on it in the first place because it's broke. Being broken means someone sneezes and you are half the man you used to be. There's always some slightly less dangerous way to do something even in a shit situation. Tying off to the rail and sitting on it, working standing on a forklift.
Hell, I'd choose using a chain and winch to lower myself there, or a ladder tied to something before getting in that kind of situation. At least you have a slight chance of not killing yourself immediately by doing something else stupid but slightly less stupid.

too much current in that bolt. circuit is probably overloaded, but ideally you want the current to flow mainly between the copper bus bar and the crimp connector. so you want to start with flat mating surfaces. then, you scrub the copper bus bar with ScotchBrite. then you put a dab of Noalox between the connectors to prevent oxidation between dissimilar metals, and tighten the nut to the bolt. If you do it all right, you maximize the area for current to flow, with as little resistance (heat) as possible.

the glow nut in >>1304534 is even more obvious. there, the mounting block is sitting at an angle to the bus bar. surface area for conduction is at a minimum. the bolts are carrying a bulk of the current instead of the flat mating surfaces. someone didn't tighten it down all the way.

This is actually a very good brand of connector, 3m ms2. Costs like $5000 for a tool setup to do the big splices.

The problem is someone walked off with the punchdown tool for the normal techs and then the normal repair and installation techs started ripping the modules apart and scotchlocking the pairs together instead of using he proper punchdown tool.

So there's a real shot boss in the area that is too retarded to order a $15 tool, so there's also no way in hell anyone is ever going to be given the 4-6 hours necessary to straighten that shitout.

You actually need an iq of like 115 to be a phone repairman but you get all sorts of retards that can't even read the instructions in four inch letters on the side of the box on how to terminate a wire properly.

Dumbass told me when I inspected the place he wasn't sure why he still had low water pressure and red water at all the taps.

Waste lines are all a mix of old cast iron and pvc with lots of flex connectors, hose clamps, and silicone running to a 30 year old septic. Still leaks a little bit in the basement with every flush. Plan to replace all that in the future too.

I bought 600ft ft of pex and propex tool to just redo all the supply lines from the meter back. Not even worth attempting to salvage the hack job. One positive note I never saw in my previous homes, there's fake doors in the hallways that allow access to plumbing for showers/tubs.

We'd have programs that you'd change a variable or two to change the bolt or tapped hole patterns for really common stuff. Like, make a regular pattern of threaded holes in so many rows by so many columns, with such and such separation.
You'd think you had it set right, not knowing the shop "genius" on 1st shift had changed something important because "it's better this way", turn away after it does the first couple spots so you could deal with one of the other two machines you were responsible for, and check back 3 minutes later to see it 's well into a fourth row of holes when it was supposed to stop after 2.

Common misconception, but gravity at ISS orbiting altitude is more than 90% as strong as it is on the ground. The difference is barely significant, though it is there. The term weight refers to the force acting on you from gravity, which you can figure out with F = GMm/r^2.

The other reason I assume you are referring to is that water is slightly denser with more pressure acting on it; water at the bottom of a pool has more specific gravity than water in a beer mug and exerts more pressure itself, so that there would be more force, caused by the weight of the water above it, on the glass lower down than higher up. But this isn't the water at the bottom having more weight, but a result of the weight of the water atop it. Confusing weight with mass is also something you need to be careful not to do.

Or perhaps you mean that as atmospheric thickness changes so too does the effective/measured weight of a mass, but again this isn't its actual weight changing and nor is it the least bit significant.

But for only a foot or two of water the pressure at the bottom of the "pool" wouldn't be enough to break the glass. What people are more concerned about however is that the weight force of the water itself may be too much for the balcony to support. Assuming a generous 8m^2 balcony full of 0.5m of water, that makes 4m^3 of water, or 4 tonnes. A more conservative estimate would be 0.25m over 6m^3, which still works out to be 1.5 tonnes. Since that balcony almost certainly isn't rated for more than 1 tonne of mass, I wouldn't trust that balcony whatsoever to act as a swimming pool. While the weight of these masses would change slightly with altitude and even air pressure, this isn't ever going to be significant.

Cars have a thermostat to keep the engine coolant at x degrees circulating around the block, which opens/closes coolant flow from the radiator.
Basically, it's a manually controlled coolant solution. Not effective, not accurate, but it works for whatever reason they couldn't get a $10 thermostat for.

the switch rooms at my work are like this

luckily there arent many devices and we dont have to touch it often so its not a TOTAL snafu but it's still pretty bad and makes me a lil upset every time i look at it

luckily the actual server area is fairly clean, it seems to just take a connection from each of the switch rooms through the walls and thats it

figuring out how anything in our building actually dials out to the internet literally took a week though since its all undocumented and makes very little sense and we share it with sea cadets who have their own internet hookup

I can guarantee you, that that setup is not for the thermostat, but for cabin a/c control. If we have a thermostat problem and can't get a new one of the right size we just take it out throw it away and run the car as is until we get one. Oh the thermostat is the gasket too? No problem, just cut your own gasket.

>Because a part is cheap means it is available.

When you live somewhere that only has a small population and not even half that population of adults has a car it becomes hard to find the correct part.

Sure, my 4wd shifter linkage was only $6 US but the closest store that has the right one is 6,000 km away. I can either

>Wait a month and a half for shipping
>Beg someone who is going on vacation or business to the first world to go an pick one up for me, still waiting some weeks
>Steal one off the only other vehicle in the country that has the same linkage
>Just get a piece of steel, bend it it the right way, put two holes in it and be out on the road in a couple hours or less.

The Hardware Department and Electronics Department at the Walmart I work at can be cringe. Live in Johnson County in Kansas. So many people with money, act like they are the smartest people around, but are also cheap asses.

Customer gets mad because we don't sell his shower head that was made 15+ years ago. Told him he might as well replace the whole shower head with a new one. Gets more mad and starts to cuss because the shower head was in two parts and just wanted the bottom part.

Customer in electronics that doesn't know how to connect a composite (red, white, yellow) cable. Then she goes on about connecting her sound bar (Cheap RCA that only has composite audio jacks. Told her she needs to connect the white and red to the sound bar and yellow to her TV. She said that since the yellow doesnt connect to the sound bar if she can just leave it disconnected on her TV. She was trying to connect her Wii to a sound bar and TV. Made a simple diagram. She still fails at understanding it.

Had a customer that wanted to connect his Wii to his TV using a USB cable because his LCD TV didn't have composite inputs.

Have a lot of people that try to buy the cheap ass ONN Micro USB cables to use with their iPhone or Android Phone the uses USB-C. Had a customer flip his shit on me because he needed a cable, told him the he needed a micro usb cable and showed him on the box and told him to look for micro usb on the box. He started to yell at me "You are throwing terms at me that I don't understand".

Had a guy that wanted a zip disk. Told him we don't sell them anymore. He get pissed off and his face started to turn red. So he explained to me (like if I was stupid) what he was looking for. I told him that he is looking for a flash drive and showed him where they are at. Then he makes the comment saying "yea, these are zip disk". Told him no and showed him on the package "flash drive". Told him that Zip Disk are like floppies but fatter and can hold more data. He gets mad and told me that he is going to keep calling them Zip Disk. Told him that I didnt care anymore and walked away.

Had a guy in the hardware department that wanted to fix the pipe to his shower head because he drilled a hole into it. He wanted to use duct tape or electric tape. Told him not to do that. I didn't wanted to deal with this guy so I got someone else to help him.

Use to work in Lawn and Garden. Had a couple that wanted to buy a tree. They ask if we will planet it for them. Told them no. Well they still bought the tree. Next day it came back in the lawn and garden returns basket.

Customers that come in and want use to give them cellphone support, put on screen protectors, or activate their phone. If they bought it from us or from a provider store, they still try to make us do it. I reject these request. Had a women get all bent out of shape and pissy because I wont reactivate a cell phone the she only buys 30 days of time for that she only uses once every 8-12 months.

Other employees that come to me for help because they are retarded or lazy.

Customers that do hand gestures that make no sense when explaining an item. Some of them that customers make are pretty damn stupid.

That customer that is always looking for a magical cable that does this or that.

Customers that think WiFi is internet and only works if you have internet. Explain that it isn't to them. Then say something like that their provider that they got it from say it is and that they will know and knows more about it then me.

Had a customer that was looking for a replacement wall wart/power brick for his AT&T cable box. He said that his provider doesn't have them and that they only sold them at Walmart. Told him that was a lie. Anyway, try to help him find one. He says it just a long thin cable with a round jack at the end. Told him to call his cable provider or look up a replacement online. This guy was a cheap ass and wanted something now.

The whole "its on your website so its in store". Told them it's not, show it on their phone, and told them to look to see who its sold and shipped by.

Furniture. I hate this area. Customer wants a TV stand. He gets a bit ticked because its not assembled. Asked if he can buy the display, told him no. Then he goes on about how he has to put it all together. Customers complain a lot about this in my store. From furniture, razor scooters (which is like only 2 things to do), grills to push mowers that you only have to pull the handle out.

Back to Lawn and Garden. Had a customer that returned a push mower because he put oil in the gas tank. Just oil, not oil and gas mixed, just oil.

Had a guy throw his candy and gum and storm out like a man child because we were sold out of black mulch.

Customers that buy grills and don't have a vehicle that it fits in. Most of the time we take the sides or top cover off to fit it in. Then they ask if we will come to their home and put the sides or top cover back on.

Speaking of grills. Had a women asked once before if she can use a grill inside her house.

Seeing and hearing about an older employee loading up a younger person car or truck. Customers that can do it but cant be bother to do it. Customers that bring their teen kids along to go shopping for these type of items. Mulch, soil, bricks, etc. 1 to 100 of it. It makes me sick because these people think that because they have money and don't work at Walmart that they can have an old person do it for them.

Since I'm quitting Walmart soon. I stop caring and fixing employees fuck ups when they misinform a customer. Hell, if they want to mix chemicals, go ahead and let them do it. Want to use the wrong item because it cheaper, sure, its your money.

Then knowing improper wiring and grounding of showers killed more than one G.I. because pakijeet can't into wiring won't make you rest easier.

Do not insert yourself between a potentially live circuit and your watery ground. Do not grasp any faucet or pipe such that you won't instantly release when you fall. The "one hand rule" for working on live circuits can save lives. (It didn't save the radar instructor at Keesler AFB (no link, it was in 1981-ish) who forgot to discharge a rather large capacitor when demonstrating for his students, but everyone else there at the time probably remembered to be careful for the rest of their lives.

Morons. Gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of distance from the center of the Earth. So let's say that much water is 7500 pounds at the level it's at right now. Assuming it would be 30 meters higher 10 stories up, it would easily lose 1.1 ounces of weight.
