I plan on building my own house someday, mostly out of salvaged building materials. I've been collecting ideas for a while, and I want more.

Why build one? Just convert a plane. A 747 provides ample space, is very well insulated, and if you live somewhere where there are eathquakes, just leave the landing gear intact and it's quakeproof.

The only difficult thing is getting gas, electric and water into the damn thing, but those problems have all been solved before.

747 too expensive? Buy a smal little thing, like an Airbus 318. Still enough space. I heard Tu-154 is selling pretty cheap for scrap, well the older versions are.

Be creative and make the wings into a terrace, put a pool or a jacuzzi in the cargohold, the cockpit your bedroom, or maybe you can buy a used cargoplane and leave the ramp open, so you can park your car inside. Leave the generator in and make it so you can use it in case of a power outage.

Now you just have to get that damn thing to where you want it.

Built a house from materials he lifted from random sites. He's finishing it now, it's actually quite stunning, clever and modern. Features include a curved wooden roof, heated floors, a padio that has a pneumatic thing that lifts it up so he can drive into the fucking basement with a boat (he yachts on the local lake, and he is a senior member of the yachting club there, which gives him leverage over bitchy neighbors)

It forms a a hard oxide layer instantly on contact with air and resists further attack from air or moisture unless you're doing something that continuously abuses the material.

i was watching a show about bunkers, and some guy welded a shit ton of school busses together, and then buried them on his property as a fallout shelter. Then he, like, said something about it being a community bunker in case of attack or something like that to the county, and they shut his ass down cause its not safe to live in buried, surplus school busses.

A 747 is a bit different though, seeing as how they are designed with pressures taken into account.

hey OP i want to hook you up..or fucking have you join my crew. you can do what me and my dad used to do and build hundreds of houses out of conventional non eco friendly materials. Check out this technology..These are open source machines you can build yourself. It is everything you need to start a mini civilization, let alone a house from found material. http://opensourceecology.org/
these guys live 3 hours from me outside kansas city i'm planning on visiting them

this pic i have is known as the hobbit house of wales, was built by three people add a computer and bam you got a sweet place. Are you going for the eco friendly slant? Also if you want to salvage there are Earth Ships made from old tires packed with dirt. Insulated instantly without chemicals or fiberglass. Then there is ferro cement an amazing and underused material here is an example
http://www.ferrocement.com/products/wickerChair.01.en.html
this will make water proof and storm proof walls super cheaply it was invented in 1850 and the boats they made out of it still exist and float!

Glass windows that size that will stop that amount of water will be costly.
Just a pool in your house seems a lot more doable to me, you just have to look into a way to cover it up. There might be small kids coming over, parties at your house where a drunk will fall in and drown(I mention this because they arrested my ass for someone nearly dying in mine due to liquor and dopesmoking), that sort of thing.
Or you can just make sure nobody drunk or little or any pets have to go past the water.

Whichever of the two you choose(or you may even combine them!) be sure to take into account the normal things you have when you have a pool. Waterfilters, pumps, cost of water, chlorine etc.
